Yesterday's Embers by Deborah Raney is about a man named Douglas DeVore and a woman named Mickey Valdez. Douglas DeVore's wife and daughter Rachel tragically die from carbon monoxide poisoning, leaving Doug to provide for his five other children alone. Mickey is one of the daycare workers where Doug leaves his kids after school until he is done with work. Mickey helps with the DeVore kids and cares for them. When Doug is late picking up the kids, Mickey volunteers to drive them home. When she arrives, she is faced with a home that hasn't been touched by a woman in a few months. Everything was a mess, and she immediately wanted to clean it. Doug arrives just a few minutes later with fast food dinner. The kids invite Mickey to stay for dinner and Mickey agrees. Afterward Mickey and Doug tackles the endless pile of dirty dishes. After the first encounter with Mickey, Doug seems to go more attracted to Mickey everyday. Soon they start going every Sunday afternoon, Mickey, Doug and the kids go bowling and have fun together. Soon Doug asks Mickey out on a date, and then he asks her to marry him. It's only been a few months since his wife's death, but he thinks that Mickey can help heal his heart. They marry and she moves right into Doug's house. But being a wife and mother is harder that Mickey expected. And she realizes that she and Doug have more things they need to work out then they thought. They fight over the smallest things and Doug can't seem to trust Mickey to discipline his children. They go see a marriage councilor and slowly work things out. Doug realizes that he was trying to get rib of his hurt by filling his heart with Mickey. They work things out, and in the end have a real wedding.
