Hi all,
most of my friends as well as my wife tend to read books only once, i on the other hand often read books multiple times. I have read all the Mercy books at least three times now (not for lack of other good books i might add) and chances are they will be on the menu again later this year. Most often i read all books in a series again right before a new one comes out, in one case this was the whole series of 12 books around Vlad Taltos or even worse the whole Honor Harrington series.

How many times do you read a book and why?

message 2: by Mariya (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 18 comments it depends what book. i re-read a book that is a favorite. and again, it depends how much I like the book and if I have time to re-read instead of checking out other books.

Shannon C. | 9 comments I tend to re-read favorite series. Many times just before a new release so the series is fresh in my mind. I read so many different series it's hard to keep all the details straight. Also I like to revisit favorite characters.

At this point I think I've read Mercy probably four times now.

I will reread books I love. I haven't gotten to reread all these yet, but I have reread Alpha and Omega already. :)

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

The same reason - I reread books because I like them so much. Often times the first time I read a book, I read it so fast, I don't see little details. So then, after the book is done - I'll go back and re-read and catch up on little hints here and there.

In the Mercy series, this is mainly gestures by characters that give a hint to a certain emotion that Mercy, at the time, didn't pick up on.

I've reread all of the Mercy books and all of A&O. Just because I love them, and they are connected. You find hints in Mercy of what happens in A&O and vice versa. :D It's fun!

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 297 comments Wow Carissa--I thought I was the only one who did that. When I do it tho, I'll usually go back right then and re-read it, so that I know what I'm "looking" at when it happens.

But some books I re-read just because I love them so much. Or because I'm at a point where I really NEED something that I know is going to have a specific effect on my mood/day.

Courtney | 32 comments I am re-reading Silver Borne now so I can be ready for River Marked!!!!!! Can't wait till March :)

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Carissa: the same happens to me quite often. Most of the time i'm simply to eager to read slow enough to get everything. Crossover between series is something i realy love, especialy if you don't expect it (like with the Lily Bard Cameo in Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse series). With SF you find this a lot more often.

Me too! I like crossing over to MT and A&O and figuring out the time line and the characters. Plus, it's cooler cause I know what happens. So I'm like 'oh...that's where Sam went to'. Lol. Or something like that. I don't know what I'm talking about Sam for. ^^;

message 10: by SheLove2Read (new)

SheLove2Read (sherrih95) depends on the book. I've reread both series twice now and I'll probably reread Silver Borne and then River Marked when it comes out.

Jessa Moore (jessa_moore) | 5 comments I will re-read books if I really liked them. Or if I'm into a series I will re-read the series before reading the latest book. Like right now I'm reading Mercy Thompson for the 4th time. Lol

message 12: by Danni (new)

Danni | 6 comments i have this one book that ive Read once a year for the last 6 years. i dont know what it is about this book theres really nothing too special about it - the characters are from the same country i am from and they travel to Germany to go to Octoberfest. we have our Own German Festival here where i live called Shutzenfest and i dont miss a year - i guess every year i go it reminds me of the book and i have to read it again. :o)

message 13: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 297 comments That's nothing Danni--I have a few books that I've re-read at least once a year since, um, well, the early 70's. :o)

And a few more that I've re-read regularly since the 80's and more from the 90's and yet more from, well, every year since 2000. :o)

And then there are those that I re-read but not quite as regularily. Like Dragonflight and the rest of the first 6 of that series. I go back every coupld of years an re-read them. Simply because they are such a good story.

I love Dragonflight also. It makes it difficult to decide which books to keep so I can re-read them. I do have all of Patricia Briggs books so I can re-read them.

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 297 comments yeah, I'm at something like 5k books in my house. Sigh, and that's after having been going through them the last 2 or 3 years and doing some heavy winnowing. Right now I'm down to the ones that take a LOT of serious thought before I get rid of them.

My Heinleins, my Nortons, my MacCaffrey's, my Briggs, my Huffs. . . Those are the ones that you take out of my house over my cold dead body, as it were. Well, those and my quilting/tatting/crocheting/knitting/costuming books.

And I am not including my "kids" books (which includes YA) in that tally. Those too are some that I'm not really ready to get rid of. Some of them I don't think I'd be able to replace. And some are just too good to RISK not being able to replace.

Jessa Moore (jessa_moore) | 5 comments The only books I read once a year are the Harry Potter books, since '97. All the others are every 2 years. :) Lol

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Dragonriders pops up on my read again list every year, just like some Heinleins, especialy To sail beyond the sunset. I must have read some of them several dozen times.

message 18: by Grace (new)

Grace (liliannemarie2012) | 2 comments I tend to read only my favorite books from a series more than once but I haven't read an entire series all over again. I'm trying to get through my TBR pile.

message 19: by SheLove2Read (new)

SheLove2Read (sherrih95) I try to re-read one book a month from my keeper shelf.

message 20: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 297 comments Bjorn, I've re-read the Dragonriders books multiple times too. Same with my Heinleins. And my Andre Nortons. And some of my Edgar Rice Burroughs and. . . Well, I have a lot of 'favs' that I read over and over.

message 21: by Emily (new)

Emily | 31 comments My sister and I call these "comfort reads". For a while, my comfort reads were the Harry Potter books-just a fun world to escape to for a while.
I've read the novella that started the Alpha and Omega series three times, because I just love it from start to finish-those characters are too good not to go back and visit a few times.
And I'm pretty sure I'll be revisiting Outlander at some point, now that I've finally finished all the novels that are out so far-I miss those characters too.

I have to agree with you. I have actually picked up the novella more than once when I was feeling sad or down, just because I knew Charles would make me feel better. LOL

message 23: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 297 comments Yeah, I've re-read that story about 7 or 8 times too. And I call my re-reads "comfort reads' too Emily. I've read only the first Harry Potter book. But that's because of the negative connotations that the series has for me. Not because of anything that was done in the books--because that first book I read out-loud to my then 5 year old grandson. We read that in Children's Hospital while he was there, undergoing chemo, radiation, getting blood transfusions, having surgeries, and all the OTHER horrors that go with a child with cancer. I've TRIED to pick them up again, because I KNOW I'd enjoy them, but every time I do, I just see him laying in bed with an oxygen tube in his nose and various tubes stuck in his body.

That could definitely put you off a book, Ann. I'm sorry to hear that your grandson went through that horrible illness.

message 25: by Emily (new)

Emily | 31 comments I'm sorry to hear about your grandson too, Ann. I'll bet it made a huge difference in his spirits to have you there, reading to him.

message 26: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 297 comments He's 15 now--and considered cured. Altho the doctors told us that he'd probably (like 95% chance) develop lung cancer later in life from all the radiation treatments he had to have. But, because we KNOW about it, they also said that we should be able to catch it early. My daughter said, "I'll face that when it comes in 40 or 50 years, as long as I have him for that long." I agreed whole-heartedly.

message 27: by Emily (new)

Emily | 31 comments That's great (the cured part)! I didn't know if I should ask or not.
