Lee Harmon (DubiousDisciple) | 21 comments Haven't studied the topic much, but it is very interesting. Similarities are also striking in the story of the flood, and of some of the legends in the book of Judges.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 297 comments I don't know how true this is, as I haven't researched every flood story, but I've heard many people say that the Genesis story is the first in which the deity (or deities) doing the flooding was the first that had the flood done for what would have been seen as good at the time. Any comments?

I believe that the creation story in the Bible is a parable...and we relive it time and time again. I think Alan Watts has a fascinating view of the Genesis creation story in his book "Myth and Ritual in Christianity." I also found Daniel Quinn's take on it interesting in "Ishmael."

I've never heard the point that we more or less relive the creation story again and again before. That's a really interesting point. Thank you. I love it when someone gives me something good to think about. :)

There is a lot of evidence for that too

Cody (rolinor) There are many similarities between the Greek underworld and it's creatures and Dante's Inferno Christian Hell.

They both have creatures like centaurs, and Cerberus
They both have the river Styx which is basically the same thing in both

and there are some more.

Micah (multivoxmuse) | 48 comments If you just take into account the method of analogy which historians use, it is indeed something that should be troublesome to the believer.

Take for example comic books. Taking one religious text to be true when all others are demonstrably false is sort of like this:
"No, I don't believe superman is real, of course Batman is a fabrication, I'd never believe in the Green Lantern, oh but SPIDER-man, now THAT's real."

Micah the problem with your argument is your assumption that each religion has an equal amount of evidence both for and against it, which simply isn't the case. There is no reason to think that just because most religions are false, they are therefore all false.

Lee Harmon (DubiousDisciple) | 21 comments However, many religions are rooted in historic claims which can sometimes be proven or disproven. Traditional creationism, for example, has been adaquately disproven.
