Dawn (breakofdawn) Hi everyone! I'm Dawn, and over the next few months I'll be playing the role of stewardess flight attendant discussion leader for Raymond E. Feist's Riftwar series.

Here's a quick run down of how it will work. Each month we'll read and discuss one book from the series. The books we'll be reading, in the order we'll be reading them, are as follows:

The Riftwar Saga:
Magician: Apprentice (February)
Magician: Master (March)
Silverthorn (April)
A Darkness at Sethanon (May)

The Empire Trilogy (with Janny Wurts)
Daughter of the Empire (June)
Servant of the Empire (July)
Mistress of the Empire (August)

Krondor's Sons Duology
Prince of the Blood (Krondor's Sons, #1) (Potentially September)
The King's Buccaneer (Potentially October)

On the first of each month, I'll put up a couple threads to discuss the book of the month in. Simple, right? This series is a very entertaining and light read, so I really hope we have a lot of fun with this discussion.

Not much else to say! For now, I'll leave you with a quick description of the first book. As the months move along, I'll post descriptions of the other books in the series in this thread as well (I'm not posting them right away, just in case they have spoilers).

Magician: Apprentice - To the forest on the shore of the Kingdom of the Isles, the orphan Pug came to study with the master magician Kulgan. But though his courage won him a place at court and the heart of a lovely Princess, he was ill at ease with the normal ways of wizardry. Yet Pug's strange sort of magic would one day change forever the fates of two worlds. For dark beings from another world had opened a rift in the fabric of spacetime to being again the age-old battle between the forces of Order and Chaos.

Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Throw them here. Otherwise, see you on February 1st!

EXcellent! I knew you could do it. Very nice.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The hard part is going to be reading just one a month. They're like peanuts!
;-)

Or did you mean pistachios because you can't eat just one! :)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I thought that was chips, but... you get the idea.

Dawn (breakofdawn) Mmm, pistachios.. Hey, this thread is supposed to get us excited about the read, not make me hungry!! :)

Julie I don't want to step on anyone's toes but I was wondering if we could have a topic that says something about talking about the first book in relation to all the books. I have somethings that I want to talk about regarding my views now versus what they were when I read the series years ago but I don't want to ruin it for others and have spoilers for other books in it. Since this is an older series maybe others would like that as well. Just a thought.

Sure. Would you like me to set up a thread called something like "Whole series discussion ***SPOILERS***"?

Julie THAT would be great and meet what I was thinking.

I know! Isn't it great?

I set up a thread.

Dawn (breakofdawn) Just FYI, the threads are all now up! If you have any suggestions for other threads you'd like me to add, feel free to let me know!

Lookin' good. I just got my book Sat. Will be starting it soon.

message 13: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I received my copy in the mail yesterday and I've started reading. I'll chime in after I read the first chapter in the appropriate thread.

Looking good Dawn!

Dawn (breakofdawn) It's almost time for our next discussion! Next on the plate, Magician: Master. Apprentice and Master were originally published as one book (simply called Magician), but it was split when published in paperback form. For that reason, this will very much feel like a continuation of th same story we started in Apprentice. Here is a quick synopsis (it has SPOILERS for Apprentice in it!):

He held the fate of two worlds in his hands...

Once he was an orphan called Pug, apprenticed to a sorcerer of the enchanted land of Midkemia.. Then he was captured and enslaved by the Tsurani, a strange, warlike race of invaders from another world.

There, in the exotic Empire of Kelewan, he earned a new name--Milamber. He learned to tame the unnimagined powers that lay withing him. And he took his place in an ancient struggle against an evil Enemy older than time itself.

I'll be posting discussion threads on the first of March. If you have any suggestions or comments based on how the Apprentice discussion went, feel free to say so here! Otherwise, see you on the first!
