I have had Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles recommended to me when I asked this question on another forum, but I have not yet gotten around to reading his work myself.
Joe Abercrombie - The Blade Itself, the start of a trilogyRobin Hobb - Assassin's Apprentice, another trilogy, then there are further trilogies set in the same world
KJ Parker - Shadow Scavenger Trilogy 1, start of a trilogy(i'm seeing a pattern here..)
other great fantasy though less sword swinging and nations clashing:
Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
The Etched City by KJ Bishop
and i haven't even bothered mentioning The Lord of the Rings as i guess you're aware of it.
