Thanks Fiona!

I was thinking of you after watching the complete "Little Britain"—What fun!. Now we are in series 2 of "Skins", a teen soap but the Brit culture is fascinating and it is much better than 90210 or The OC.

'Skins' is now in its fifth series over here; I am really glad that this British teen drama is being aired in the U.S. It certainly differs from 'The OC' and 'Dawson's Creek'!
I think you will agree that 'Skins' is brilliantly stylised; beautifully, controversially, tragically realistic; appeals to both a teenage and adult audience; has great casting (the line-up for the first series was astonishingly good); demonstrates inspired script-writing (the writing team has an average age of 21); and the way in which the television series has permeated other forms of media is truly ground-breaking.

http://www.facebook.com/skins

One can even follow the characters on Twitter!

Hmmmmmm.... 'Little Britain': I'm bored of the catchphrases, tired of the same crass jokes, bothered that they continually pander to public expectation, and I would even go so far as to say that their stereotyped sketch show characters are offensive. I just can’t bear to watch ‘Little Britain’ any longer.

The wonderful David Walliams and Matt Lucas are really not challenging themselves enough nowadays.

They are both brilliant and talented actors. I highly recommended ‘Capturing Mary’; Walliams' performance was utterly breath-taking: http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/poliakoff/...
And I was delighted to read in the news just last week that Lucas is going to continue in his role of Thénardier in Les Misérables on stage in London’s theatre-land. I must try to get a ticket!

I agree with you about Skins. it is as some Brits say, brilliant! I really care about the characters. We are watching it on DVD and are in the middle of Series 2, Michele and Sid just did it on the beach. And Maxie... sigh he make me want to be 18 again...

A question—The girl from the girl's school who is after Tony and lied to him about their being a couple after is accident. She has what I interpret to be a Dutch accent. Is this a British comment about the Dutch?

We watched all of Little Britain back to back and I kept telling Chris, "I wish they do something different." Still, it was fascinating for us to watch the 2 guys making fun of British cultures. I loved it when they made fun of Americans too. The bit when the US President & your PM met and their 2 assistants was a hoot.

Thank for telling me about "Capturing Mary". I'm a watch-all-Maggie-Smith's movies guy and somehow missed this. I will give it a look. Opps it's region 2 only, but I can sign up to be notified when region 1 is available which means it will probably be released.

These are the series we have, but have not seen. I'm not sure which we'll watch after Skins:

Skins
Beyond the Fringe
Mapp & Lucia
Two's Company
Stalag Luft
Clatterford
The IT Crowd
People Like Us

Sorry for hijacking this thread, but Fiona is a great resource for Brwiticisms ;-)

Thanks for your comments, and also for apologising about us digressing from this fabulously-fun thread!

@ Aughadan/Joy: your "needs" are hilarious, especially #2 and #6! I am glad you participated in this game.

Back to Skins, just ever so quickly: in response to your question I will have to return to my DVD box set and remind myself of this scene with Tony. It is all a bit hazy right now...it has been quite a while since I have watched these early episodes. Is it okay for me to get back to you another time with my thoughts?

Regarding Lucas and Walliams, apparently they have written and are starring in a 'new' comedy spoof show: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00trc9v
I am not at all impressed, but many others are! I thought that perhaps you might like to take a look if it is available on region 1 DVD.

I would certainly recommend "Gavin and Stacey" - a heterosexual romantic comedy, following the long-distance relationship between Gavin (Mathew Horne) from Billericay in Essex, England, and Stacey (Joanna Page) from Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. Alison Steadman as Gavin's mother is fantastically funny!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_an...

Enough of the "Brwiticisms" (love that term, will steal that term!), we should let the fun and games continue here ;)

Okay Kernos, so it took me a while to figure out who you were referring to (utter confusion) but having now re-watched series 1 and 2 of Skins I can confidently state that there are absolutely no Danish characters, no Dutch accents. The reason you had me feeling really rather perplexed and as such questioning my own memories of the series' was because the character you question the nationality/accent of - Abigail Stock, is quite simply a terribly posh, stereotypical affluent young upper class British girl! It is fascinating to me that you heard Danish! :)

I certainly have. I am finding it harder to deal with changes—big changes like moving or work and even little changes like changes in activities of daily living.

I would dread having to move again with all the books I have. Even after streamlining my collection, I still have three overflowing bookcases, plus a few boxes in my walk-in closet.

My current job is going well so far, other than the deadly commute. I've been with the university a year and a half and became full-time last month. I'm now eligible to join the union. I wish that union was around in some of the places I've worked at before.

message 32: by Bill, Moderator (new)

Bill (kernos) | 2988 comments Mod
I'm not sure I could deal with a "deadly commute" anymore. Mine is 12 miles of rural highway and takes about 12 minutes unless I have to wait for a train.

What kind of work are you doing know?

message 33: by Nancy (last edited Aug 12, 2015 09:23AM) (new)

Nancy | 2838 comments I'm a Senior Program Coordinator (fancy title for administrative assistant) for Boston University. I work for a researcher and support 20 post-docs and students. Even though I get very busy at times, it's one of the most stress-free jobs I've worked at. The people here are super.

My commute is actually pretty good in the summer months, about an hour there are and back. After Labor Day, it will be a two-hour commute in the morning and slightly less in the evening. I spend time at the library, eat dinner, and go for walks to avoid the worst traffic. If the weather is real bad in the winter, I'll spend the night at a hotel. If it's extremely bad, we get shut down. Last year we had 6 snow days.
