Krizia Anna (krizia_lazaro) | 520 comments I'm might be reading Threshold by Sara Douglass next... But I don't think I'm a good reading buddy since I have a limited time to read

message 4: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments I'm planning to read Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller after two weeks. It's going to be my third attempt. Maybe I can finally finish it if I read with someone. Anyone interested? :)

message 5: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments KRIZIA: There may be somebody who has also limited reading time like you. Tintin and I (for "Hardboiled") read 2 chapters a day. 1 chapter is good for 1 sitting so it does not take a long time really.

ANGUS: I just read that last month. Do you plan to read "Capricorn" too? If yes, I can wait for you. BTW, although "Cancer" was written before "Capricorn", the story in "Capricorn" happens before that of "Cancer's". So, let me know if you want to read "Capricorn" first and you can be my reading buddy.

message 6: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments K.D., did you and Tintin set the pace for your Murakami read? I'm thinking about signing up for this so I can force myself to read at a faster pace. My brain could sure use the exercise. :)

I will try my best to keep up with you but I don't have a lot of time to read! K.D. is such a speedy reader.

message 8: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments REGINE, you tell me how many pages a day. I will abide by what you want.

MONIQUE: Yes, we agreed. See my "review" of the book. I suggested 1 chapter. She checked. She saw that there are 40 chapters and our set limit (as a Filipino group) is 1 month. Otherwise, it will drag and some people (in the reading group) might lose interest.

message 9: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments K.D.: Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of Capricorn. Yet. Would you believe that I just bought my copy of Cancer from a sidewalk vendor? Ang saya lang ng pakiramdam!

message 10: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Oo naman. Ang "Cancer" ko galing sa BS for P75.

Ang "Capricorn" hand-me-down from my brother. Priceless! Naka-tupi pa ang magagandang quotes!

message 11: by Angus (new)

Angus (angusmiranda) | 4337 comments Waaah! Hindi ko kayang tupiin or guhitan ang books ko kahit second-hand lang sila. So ang ginawa ko, nagset up ako ng Tumblr account at doon ko na nilalagay yung mga magagandang passages.

Regine | 121 comments K.D. wrote: "REGINE, you tell me how many pages a day. I will abide by what you want.

Okay, well this edition is 372 pages, and if we go by that, this will probably take me 3 weeks to 1 month to read. Or we can try to go 2 chapters a day?

message 14: by Tintin (last edited Mar 17, 2011 07:45AM) (new)

Tintin (marimorimo) | 111 comments @MONIQUE: If you're up for reading The Handmaid's Tale The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood , I'm available to read it by Mar. 26. (I compared our books and this was one of unread books we had in common.

The others were Number the Stars, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, The Thirteenth Tale, and Bet Me). Although of those the only one I currently have a copy of is Number the Stars and The Handmaid's Tale.

message 15: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments @TINTIN~ I don't have a copy of The Handmaid's Tale but I can get one if you prefer to read that. I already have Number The Stars at home. I'll let you choose.

March 26 is OK with me, although if you'd want to take a break after your Murakami read with K.D., it's also fine with me. Just let me know.

I'm looking forward to this! Great idea, Reading Buddies. :)

message 16: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments TINTIN and MONIQUE: I will join you in reading that Atwood's book. March 26 is fine with me. By that time, Regine and I should be winding up our Laclos.

message 17: by Regine (new)

Regine | 121 comments I thought we were starting April 4th?

message 18: by Tintin (new)

Tintin (marimorimo) | 111 comments @K.D. and Monique: So Handmaid's Tale is OK? I only said March 26 because that's the soonest I can get my copy which is in my bookshelf in another province. Anyway I don't mind reading 2 books at the same time. Let's set a date which is most convenient for all. K.D., by March 26 we still have a quarter of Hard-boiled Wonderland left.

message 19: by K.D. (last edited Mar 18, 2011 05:22PM) (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments REGINE: I got mixed up with my dates. Sorry. But, it is still manageable. I checked my copy of Laclos and there are 4 parts. Can we have 1 part per week? But I need to read few days in advance because my copy has intro to this edition, intro for the first edition and prologue.

TINTIN: I'm still in for Atwood on March 26, this will be 6 days from now.

I will schedule my day as follows:
MORNING - The Holy Bible
Murakami (1st chapter while in the toilet)
LUNCHTIME - Murakami (2nd chapter while resting)
EVENING - Atwood (this being a sci-fi, I don't want to loose sleeping hours)
Laclos (Classic books put me to sleep)
Then on weekends, I will prioritize Laclos. I would imagine that this needs more concentration.
See? This can be managed :)

Tuklas Pahina (TP) | 1191 comments reading buddies?...anyone likes

"Roadtrip" by Ru Dela Torre
"Mystic River" by Denise Lehane
"Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren Tagalog or English version

message 21: by Tintin (new)

Tintin (marimorimo) | 111 comments Hi Po! I'm up for reading "Roadtrip" after we're done with the Haruki Murakami book (early April). I don't usually read these kinds of books but my Dad was given a copy by Ru DelaTorre's mother. I don't know Pastor Ru personally but their house is only a block away from ours.

message 22: by Tintin (last edited Mar 19, 2011 07:23PM) (new)

Tintin (marimorimo) | 111 comments @K.D & Monique: So let's start The Handmaid's Tale on March 26?

Let's set our reading pace. I suggest the following:

1) 2 chapters a day everyday (end in 23 days)
2) 4 chapters every other day (end in 23 days)
3) 3 chapters every other day (end in 30 days)
4) 12 chapters every week (end in 4 weeks)
5 15 chapters every week (end in 3 weeks)

The Handmaid's Tale has 46 chapters in all.

Or if you have another idea for a scheduling scheme, please tell us :)

message 23: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments I am okay with #1.

Good luck sa Roadtrip ninyo ni Po.

message 25: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments K.D. and TINTIN~ Can we instead start "Handmaid's Tale" on March 28th? My weekends are pretty much devoted to my daughter and I have more time to discuss with you during office days (first thing in the morning, hehe!). If that's OK. :)

I haven't checked the length of the chapters, let's finalize this tomorrow (Monday). Thanks! :)

K.D., do you already have a copy of "Seeing" by Jose Saramago?

message 26: by K.D. (last edited Mar 20, 2011 04:35PM) (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Yes, I thought of that too. I normally start a book on a Monday. I don't know why.

MONIQUE: I have that already but still unread. I read "The Double" and they say that "Seeing" is a continuation of that. "The Double" is great but I think I will read his "The Gospel According to Christ" first. I have that too. I am Saramago's fan! Maybe as my Holy Week read.

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Hi looking for another reading buddy, after reading the Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card. Rollie, again, asked me to read the third book, Xenocide. Anyone willing to join the fun? Sorry, I know, we suppose to read the first book but I already read it last year and Rollie read it this month. So we don't have a choice, anyway, we'll start discussing the book on April 8.

Want to catch up discussing Speaker for the Dead? You can visit our discussion here!

message 28: by Monique (new)

Monique (attymonique) | 2130 comments K.D.~ I chanced upon copies at Booksale of both Blindness and Seeing and thought you might want to have them, if you don't have copies yet. Guess I'll keep them for myself. I'm curious to read his works. :)

About Handmaid's Tale, go na ako sa 2 chapters a day. But I hope we can start on March 28th.

KWESI~ Di ba medyo mahirap if you're reading a series and you're already in the middle of it? I'd like to join sana because my husband has already finished the whole Ender series, but I need to start from the Ender's Game. Maybe you can pick some other sci-fi titles. :)

I also have the same thought Monique.

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 2752 comments Jzhun and Monique, sorry guys, but Rollie already decided everything and I'm just advertising the discussion. Well, if I can only back in time, I'll stop my old-self from reading Ender's Game. Anyway, I think everyone still have time to read Ender's Game and anytime you can join the discussion.

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Wanted: Reading buddies for the following:

1) The Book Thief
2) James Joyce's ULYSSES
3) Canterbury Tales
4) Gibbon's THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE
5) Don Delillo's UNDERWORLD
6) Pynchon's AGAINST THE DAY

Advantage of Reading Buddies: I will be forced to understand everything.

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments K.D. wrote: 5) Don Delillo's UNDERWORLD"

I'm raring to read this book K.D. but Gahd it's soo thick. Pahinga muna ko sa thick books specially after The Grapes of Wrath. I also tried out the first chapter and I was just bog down by the baseball rules references because, obviously, I'm not a fan of the game. So, yeah, pity me.

message 43: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments That's why I am looking for a ready buddy. You will be forced to read. Otherwise, you'll lag behind.

Tintin (marimorimo) | 111 comments Ulysses...the only novel that 200 pages in I still didn't know what on earth I was reading. Abandoned it after the 250-page mark :(

If you ask me what it was about, I can't even tell you O_o;

Then I won't read it. Wala kong patience sa mga hard-to-understand novels e. hehe. ako na ang tamad.

message 49: by K.D. (last edited Mar 22, 2011 02:45PM) (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Ulysses is based on Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. James Joyce uses "recurring" character (started with Balzac) technique here by having Dedalus, the young man in his previous book "A Portrait of a Young Man as an Artist" as one of the protagonists here. I read "Young Man" but not Homer's books. I want an expert opinion (Regine, if you can help), do we need to read Homer first?

I agree, Tintin. I twice tried to read this but lost interest. So, I need a reading buddy (or buddies) to make sure that I will be forced to read this. Check any lists of best novels, this book is always there.

I heard that this has lots of sexual content so it heightens my interest to read and understand this thoroughly. My brother even bought me a book (another book as a guide) to read Ulysses.

Let's challenge ourselves. We can do it by reading 5 pages a day so it will not be too hushed up and we fail to understand what the book is all about.

Anybody with me?

message 50: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 6065 comments Thanks, Regine. Let's read Canterbury after Dangerous Liaisons! :)
