Hello, as Val suggested a poll to start with group readings, I thought of starting here with ideas.
Tell me wich books are you interested in reading as group, so I get titles and make the poll with them. I'm currently reading The Brothers Karamazov and quite enjoying it but I've just practically started it. I wouldn't have much problem to read other stuff meantime.
I'd love to discuss with someone The Brothers Karamazov but I'm also really interested in The Cherry Orchard
Now your turn to nominate!

Amyjzed | 45 comments I just finished The Brothers Karamazov the other day... it took me a while to read it, and I wouldn't mind joining in some kind of discussion about it at all!

I decided to jump right in to Anna Karenina because my local bookstore is going to have a book club meeting in April on it (they had one this week already, too, but I wasn't ready). So far I've just listened to the first 5 chapters on audio.

The other books I'd most want to read personally are Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment and Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita.

I'd also be interested in Dostoevsky's shorter novels The Gambler and Notes From the Underground. I'd read pretty much anything by Dostoevsky, but I already read The Idiot.

Also:
-Anything by Solzhenitsyn (except One Day in the Life-- already read)... The Cancer Ward, The First Circle, The Gulag Archipelago

-Dr. Zhivago

I look forward to hearing other people's suggestions!

Valerie (another_one_bites_the_dust) When first thinking over what types of Russian Lit I wanted to read...I could barely even put together a list of Russian writers. Sad, yes.

I love Amy's ideas, as well as Antia's.

I advocate for:

Cancer Ward or anything by Nikolai Gogol

Valerie (another_one_bites_the_dust) I was just looking up books for another group and I came across a different one that seems really interesting.

The Invitation by Claude Simon

Great ideas girls!
Do you want to wait a few days to see if more people want to join us or we decide and start now? I have no problem on keeping it "intimate" or with bigger number of members.

Johanna wrote: "Wow, these are great suggestions! It sounds like we already have some solid choices. I hesitate to officially nominate anything due to my lack of knowledge about Russian lit, but I will second Ma..."

Yes, I think you are right. Let's wait until friday, then I'll post poll so we still have few days to decide before April.
Of course, there is still time in case some other titles come to your mind and want to suggest. My heart is right now divided between Doctor Zhivago and Dostoyevsky :)

Of course it isn't! I've actually been trying to do the same thing with a few of my groups...sadly though, groups are never dictatorships :(

So let's see if I don't miss any title before working on the poll if I forget anything, tell me, I plan on posting the poll today or tomorrow, to start reading next friday 1st April? I've been thinking maybe of leaving the secondary idea of short/stories for later, first let's see how it goes our first book?

Valerie, you mentioned you wanted "anything by Nikolai Gogol" but haven't told any title in particular. Is there any you specially think of? I nominate by him "Dead Souls" because I am also interested, but tell me if you were thinking of other book.

So, let's remind all options:
-The Master and Margarita
-Doctor Zhivago
-Crime and Punishment
-The Gambler
-Notes from Underground
-Cancer Ward
-The First Circle
-The Gulag Archipelago: 1918-1956
-The Invitation
-Dead Souls
-Lolita

Hope I'm not missing any title. Great options! Hard to choose :) I'll send you message when the poll is posted

message 9: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (another_one_bites_the_dust) Don't forget to seperate those options into novella versus novel.

message 10: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (another_one_bites_the_dust) Oi!...I didn't read that, forgive me :)

Val, as I don't know very well how many people are interested, or can read both or just one.. I think we can start with one book and later check how it goes, how long takes us to read together and so on? It's the first time I do a book group, I want to make it fine and fun for all but I'm afraid of being too ambitious.
Don't worry, I won't forget and we'll see how it goes :)

Amyjzed wrote: "Good list! If anyone is keen on Anna Karenina, i've just started it."

Anna Karenina too then :) I don't know if other people did, I already read it, wouldn't mind re-reading but in case we start with other book, you can always start new discussion (there is a board with title "Specific Authors", it can go well there) if you want to express any feeling or thought about it. I read it about a year ago but I think I keep a fresh memory of it in mind so we can discuss about it (we can always put the Spoilers sign haha)

The same for the rest, if any member want to comment, review, recommend or anything about other books with russian theme apart of the ones we are reading, you are welcome! I'll start new folder for it on the general board.

Everyone: The poll to decide is open. I've sent invitation to all members, but just in case

message 14: by Amyjzed (new)

Amyjzed | 45 comments Antía-- just wondering if the "Specific Authors" board you mentioned is part of this group or somewhere else...?

I wouldn't mind discussing The Brothers K somewhere here and Anna Karenina if we don't end up reading it as a group.

Yes Amyjzed, I'm afraid I didn't explain it correctly (english isn't my native language so excuse if sometimes I sound strange). I created few days ago a folder with name "Specific authors". I didn't start any topic on it so maybe because it was empty it didn't appear for other members. I changed the name for "Discussing Russian Lit" and started a topic to explain that it can work to discuss other books apart of the ones we read as group.
So if you want to start new lines of dicussion I would be glad! I'm around page 400 of Brothers Karamazov, I'm a slow reader so it would take me time, enough to discuss it meantime :)

awayspa | 7 comments I vote Master and Margarita and/or Dead Souls.
