Caitlin (catsbooksandcritters) | 71 comments Do you buy just from one source? or many? Do you only buy new or a picky about the edition? Please share I'm curios about others book buying habits.

I buy online from Amazon and I just place my first order from Better World Books a few days ago. I use to buy only new online but recently I started buying used books online. I buy used books from flee-markets, used book stores, or Goodwill. I'm not picky about the edition but I usually pick the prettiest I can find and try to avoid movie covers.

message 2: by Teawench (new)

Teawench I buy from Half Price Books, Barnes & Noble, garage sales and amazon.com for the most part. I used to spend a lot of money at a local used bookstore but apparently me & my mom weren't enough to keep it open :-(

I'm with you, Caitlin. I don't care much about edition but stay away from movie covers & if I have a choice pick the most interesting cover or one that matches the rest if it's a series.

message 3: by Neko (new)

Neko I've my selected places to buy from and won't usually go outside of that zone. Why? Over the years I've been testing and trialing places and now I've got my selelcted places and don't usually look elsewhere.

The only time I will divert is if someone I know has bought from a different place and has had success with the store, online or offline.

I've never been that fussy about the edition...If I get a first edition then I'm even happier but if I don't, no biggy.

Krista (stfuattdlagg) | 26 comments I buy from ebay because right now we dont have a book store where i live....tragic i know lol...but Book World should be opening in our mal within a year:)

Krista (stfuattdlagg) | 26 comments and im not to picky but I make sure I buy a series that already has 4 or more books to it since i read books so quickly

message 6: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (catsbooksandcritters) | 71 comments Oh and I also buy from Half Priced Books.

chucklesthescot I buy general fiction in charity shops, buy my UF/PNR on amazon, and trade what I can on RISI

message 8: by Arminius (last edited May 18, 2011 01:51PM) (new)

Arminius I buy my books mostly from B&N. I also buy from Amazon because they will ship them to where I am.

I also like http://edwardrhamilton.com/

and this site http://www.historynetshop.com/book-se....

Garage sales are great at times too.

Where I shop often depends on what I am buying.
New paperbacks I often buy from Borders with their coupons since Amazon doesn't offer anything off on paperbacks.
New hardcovers I buy from Amazon since they usually have the best deals and I'm sure to spend enough for free shipping.
I'll browse for used books at Half Price and the public libraries and if I am looking for a particular used title I'll also check out Thriftbooks.com.
If I'm nearby and have the time I'll also stop in to Andersons Book Shop to look for autographed books and at Barnes and Noble to check their clearance shelves.

I've flagged it.

I've seen 3, 4 counting this and I think there is more.

ஐ Katya (Book Queen)ஐ (katyabookqueen) I've found at least ten in our group alone and flagging them all. It's ridiculous.

I believe I did delete at least 10 of these spams. I will not tolerate this annoyance and will delete them as well as the poster of them from the group as quickly as I can. Please do keep flagging them as you find them, hopefully this will help as well. Sorry I can't do more.

message 14: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie Seward I buy used books. We have a used book store in town that charges half of what a book cost new which equals out to buying online and paying shipping and handling charges. So I check out the used book store first and if they don't have a certain book I buy online.

message 15: by Jack (new)

Jack (echoicglory) | 41 comments I buy both used and new. Borders had always been my first choice given it's closer to where I live. Then there's Kinokuniya, Times etc. I usually buy used when I stumbled over some sale by the road and some random books caught my eyes. Generally, I am not picky. Well, that's a lie. I like my books to be in good conditions. It doesn't have to be perfect, but I'd like for it to still have covers and doesn't have stain all over it... =P

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm not to picky if i see a good book at a good price ill buy it I'm a bit more careful which online stores I use and there are only a couple that i use and probably wont change them
i also love second hand book stores :D

message 17: by Kerra (new)

Kerra | 127 comments I get my books from where ever I can find them :) However, if I like a book a lot (which is most of them) I buy the hard back to it. I have this pet peeve with books. As in, don't bend the pages or covers, and just plain don't touch my books at all with greasy fingers. I don't know why I am like this, but I got sick of my books getting scratches and ruined when I let a friend borrow one. So, I just buy the crappy version first or the new paper back, so I can let friends borrow them and do what they please with them. Then I buy the hard back for myself and I don't let anyone touch them. So, further more, I am going to have to have two separate libraries in my house when I buy one. One for people to touch and one for myself. Crazy I know :)

message 18: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (berry68) | 3 comments I get most of my books from Amazon. So far they have had everything I've wanted and the prices are great! Also the condition of the books is to my liking.I bought myself a Nookcolor for Christmas,so I've been downloading alot of books on that too.Once in awhile I'll go to the Goodwill and find some books that I've been looking for.I love buying books and sharing them with friends.

message 19: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jsills3) | 54 comments I am an equal opportunity buyer. New and used. Anywhere and everywhere.

message 20: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 2 comments I'm a fan of Better World Books. They sell both new and used books. Their Bargain Bin has a great variety and shipping is always free. Also they use their funds to help literacy programs worldwide.

message 21: by Shellie (new)

Shellie (justshellie) I will admit I'm on a really tight budget (really tight) most of the books I buy are from the used book shelf at the library for a dollar or less and from thrift stores. I haven't purchased a NEW book for months. I buy any title, subject or author that I recognize or that I know is on my want to read list, and I buy books to give to family and friends as gifts so I'm always looking for titles and subjects for them as well. Sometimes books are the only thing I do lol.

message 22: by Linda (new)

Linda Rowland | 16 comments Any place that has books for sale, even jumble sales that are not only book sales. I am not near a city so if I need a book for a book club read or fill in a series I go to amazon first. I will buy a book with the movie cover only when I can't find any other edition. I hate the marketing of a book by saying "Look, we made a movie of this.".

message 23: by Bridgette (new)

Bridgette | 36 comments Im not really fussed of where I get my books. To be honest I help to get my mum Tesco clubcard points and waterstones points when i what books. I get my books from all different places, online is occasionally, charity shops, secondhand cookstore and my local market I use the most for used books. If I want Books that have just been released I will go to the bookstores.

message 24: by Bob (new)

Bob Cooley (boblikesbooks) | 16 comments I love bookfinder.com. I'm a little (okay, maybe a lot) obsessive about finding a book in the best condition for the best price. I buy online a lot and have had good success with e-bay and amazon but I will admit to being a thrift store junkie too. They know me by name at some places. I love making the rounds and looking for hidden treasure - and the prices are unbeatable.

Once in a great while I'll find a book or two at a yard sale but not usually considering the types of book I enjoy. I also like friends of the library sales and other fund raising book sales.

message 25: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I get a lot of my books from Abebooks, Dadaelus Books or Edward Hamilton, Bookseller....all are online but only Abebooks has used books. Great selections and good prices. We also have a yearly library sale which is fantastic....people lined around the block with wagons to haul away their treasures. Every once in a while I also get books from Ebay. Our local thrift store has a terrible selection for sale..I have never found anything but I keep going back, searching for that gem that is hidden in the pile.

message 26: by Miss Asima (new)

Miss Asima (missasima) | 21 comments I shop on Amazon, at goodwill, Walmart, & Barnes & Nobel, on a regular basis. But anywhere I go with a book section I make sure to at least browse it and see if there is anything I want. Plus I hit up used book stores, garage sales, estate sales and the like as often as possible. I'm not picky about cover or anything. But some times there are particular ones I want and I'll make sure to get them.

message 27: by Coqueline (new)

Coqueline I love buying used books. I keep track of all used book market schedule in town. I also keep an eye on the local classified ad for moving sale/garage sale/book lot sale.

In case I want a book that I can't get easily used, I hold a membership card for my local bookshop close to my office, where I can just pop by during lunch hour.

I also buy from Amazon when I find it cheaper to do so.

message 28: by Briohny (new)

Briohny (wakkachuta) | 6 comments I love the feeling of seeing a new package from the Book Depository. It's always very exciting to see that little package behind the pillar on the front porch.

However, if I can't wait a couple weeks for my book, I generally go to the local Angus and Robertson, and I will go to just about any book store to get ideas for books I want to read, mainly Borders because it has a wider range of books.

I'm not generally fussed about new vs used. The only thing I'm picky about is the cover. I avoid movie covers like the plague.

I've also discovered iBooks on my iPhone *grins*

I shouldn't be blaming her, but my best friend has turned me into a more picky person. I have been reading a lot of series lately (!) and I need the books in the series to be uniform. It's annoying when they're not! So since I've gotten my iPhone, if I want to read a new book, I buy it on iBooks and then I can buy it again on the Book Depository later on in a few months (or a couple years if that's what it takes!). Kinda sad, I know. But they need to be the same!!!!!!

message 30: by Luciana (last edited Mar 31, 2011 02:10PM) (new)

Luciana | 26 comments I only buy new books, unless the book I want is out of print.

My favourite places are Amazon and a local bookstore from my country which has a very good website to order from. I also adore a bookstore we have over here that specializes in French books.

These 3 are my favourites. I love going to the 'physical' bookstore, but I'm very particular about the books I want, and they rarely have those in the store, so mostly I've been ordering online. The waiting is really hard though.

I have a weakness for hardcovers. However, they are more expensive, so I don't buy them too often.

message 31: by Mark (new)

Mark (rorscach) | 8 comments I buy from BookDepository.com. Its cheap, free delivery and fast, i usually get my books in 4-5 days.
Thats where i get a majority of my books, but sometimes i have a browse around a bookstore, theres just something satisfying about that. Although i rarely buy a book without knowing about it. My process is usually looking up top 10 lists and such, then if i like the sound of a book i will look it up on amazon just to see what people think about it, then finally i'll order it online.

message 32: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea I have a method. I go to B&N everyweek, bring a pad of paper, browse the shelves and usually get like a stack of 7 books, read the backs, and first page and then the ones i like i write down so that when i come home i go to www.half.com and can order them for about 85% off the original price. Also I live in Richmond, VA and there is this store called Black Swan Books and it sells only vintage books and I found a about 30 really old first editions that i want so badly!

message 33: by Ron (new)

in my mind I am buying books for myself and not to share and thus if I lend it out only lend it when I know will recieve it back how i gave it

message 36: by Bob (new)

Bob Cooley (boblikesbooks) | 16 comments I am a little giddy right now... it's payday and I have a rather extensive wish list. I think I'll be sending some dollars to Amazon soon. I love the anticipation of the package(s) in the mail!!!

On lending: no can do. I'm too picky with how I handle my books (just ask my kids!). I have some books that I have read that still look brand new (I can't stand to crack the spine). I do like to buy books for friends and family though. I figure it's the perfect gift every time, right? :^)

message 37: by Afsana (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) | 157 comments I tend to read writers that I know and then need to read all their books till I get bored (not necessaruly one after another or in order)If I try a new author I tend to start amassing their other books before ebven knowing i like iit- i can't seem to help it.

I tend o buy from charity shops, supermarkets . Online I by from amazon and recently have started using RISI

on occaion I ger from ebay and if a member of a book club from there
I rarly buy from bookstores anymore unless there is an really good offer- though I use them to see if there is any neww books out

message 38: by Lex (new)

Lex Mori (lex_mori) | 12 comments I mainly buy from Borders.com (it's cheaper online with the rewards plus card). I am very picky about books. I have only been picky about the editions of Scott Westerfeld books lately (because the covers change so often, I paid $20 for the original cover of Leviathan) but more than the editions/covers, I am picky about writing styles. Over the years, I've come to realize I might be a little too picky about it and have bought some books I don't think are quite up to par just to give them a try, but honestly, if the writing sucks, I won't buy it or if I have already bought it, I won't buy from the author again or continue a series. If the dialogue is too cheesy, if the story is repetative, if the writer's vocabulary is limited, it looses points for me.

message 39: by Sam (new)

Sam (lit-brit) I just bought some books from BetterWorldBooks.com. I have no idea if they are used or new but each one cost $3.48 with free shipping!!! Will update you all when they get delivered!!

And the nice thing about BetterWorldBooks is that they strive to impact the globe socially, economically and environmentally through reusing, recycling and donating books and money.....go check them out.

message 40: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandapearl) I don't like movie covers, especially of series. I have bought a few movie covers of novels that stand alone, like The Road by Cormac McCarthy .

If I am buying a series I only buy one type of publishing. All hardback, all paperback, all bindups, whatever. I prefer paperback and I'll wait until the paperback comes out to buy, and borrow from the library in the mean time.

My biggest pet peeve is mixing publication types.

Amazon, Read It Swap It, high street stores selling cheap books, charity shops, second hand book stores, boot fairs and I borrow from friends too!

I'm not fussy about editions or even the condition; if it's cheap and I want to read it, I'll buy it.

message 45: by Cecilie (new)

Cecilie (cecili2424) | 5 comments I mostly buy from Barns & Noble in store or online, but mostly online because it's cheaper. But I usually don't buy used books, I don't really like that someone has used it before. I usually pick the prettiest edition of the book, unless one of the others are a lot cheaper. Plus I don't like movie covers, the original are usually a lot prettier.

message 46: by Laura (new)

Laura I am obsessed with going to local used book sales. I always go with good intentions to only buy books that I am looking for but I usually end up finding lots that I "just have to have". Also, I love finding old books with inscriptions inside.

message 47: by McKenzie (new)

McKenzie | 45 comments Most of my collection has come from Borders. I used to only buy new, strictly. And sometimes I'd make a new book purchase from Amazon, or their market sellers.

But lately I am more opent to buying used books as long as they are in decent condition. And somtimes if I want to read a book bad enough and the only way I can get it is used, then so be it.

But lately I have just been buying used in general sometimes. There is a little used bookstore near me called the Book Depot and I have been a frequent visitor there lately.

I am excited about summer and flea market season. They always have tons of cheap books for good prices!

Willi (lwilli) | 14 comments I always look for the books I want to read from Ebay and Amazon.com because a lot of time I get them for a penny or for just change.Yes, I have to pay shipping, but it still is a small amount. The quality of these used books has always been good.If there is a new book, the price is still lower than you can buy at bookstores.

message 50: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (purplemushroom) | 1 comments I recently discovered Book Depository and get most of my books there now since it's cheapest and has pretty much everything I want. Have good finds sometimes at garage sales and used book stores. Buy books at Dymocks or Borders on the rare occasion that they have what I want and at a reasonable price.
