Ingrid For me, it started young. I didn't know it, but I loved it from a very young age. I would listen to my brother and cousin sing beautiful melodies, and then one day...
It was a crisp fall day and my brother and I were taking a walk. I asked him to sing his amazing songs. The one went "One day more." Then he asked me if I wanted to know the story. I said yes, and my education began. It took off from there. I watched the whole thing on youtube, I bought the sheet music, and then I bought my brother the Complete Symphonic Recording for his birthday. (Of course, it is his, it just lives in my room. Only a temporary thing. Temporary.)

lol. thats so... so... touching!!! lol
um, my parents and grandparents recommended it, and i saw the concert video thingy. at first, it was ok, not amazing, not bad. then i downloaded the songs to my ipod, and i got addicted to them. i listened to them day in and day out. i sometimes go through these phases with a certain group of songs, but my Les Mis phase was by far the longest. i would listen to it whenever i got the chance. i also got the easy piano book of some of the songs, and i played those a lot, but they are missing a lot of good songs...

message 3: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid I know! I wish there was a music book with all the songs in it.
Ha. That reminds me of something my oldest brother (not the other Les mis lover) said. "Oh, don't worry. This is just another of her phases, she'll grow out of it." I never did though. I never did.

Juli | 44 comments End of 8th grade.. saw the student edition at my current hs and have been hooked ever since

message 6: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Ah yes. I've been wanting and wanting to see it. Unfortunately, it never comes! Ever. Grr

message 7: by Juli (new)

Juli | 44 comments It's really very good... many people say that the current drama director should have retired after that because nothing else (however amazing) will ever compare to it

message 8: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Ah. I suppose that is the problem with performing once amazingly. Every other time will seem inadequate compared to that one superb production.

message 9: by Juli (new)

Juli | 44 comments It really was fantastic... she got two middle school boys (both from my school, coincidentally) and one middle school girl (for young Eponine) to be in the production, so I loved it

message 10: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Ahh.
I really wish I could've seen it.
It makes me very sad that I've never seen it. Ah well, maybe someday.

Pam Nugent | 1 comments I fell in love with Les Mis when I first saw it as a young naive 16/17 year old with my sister and her then boyfriend and since then I have seen many different versions: musical, movie (singing and non-singing), read the book and cannot get enough of it.

message 13: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Welcome Pam!
I know! Isn't Les Mis just wonderful?
One of the things that sets it apart from other musicals is that it isn't mindless.
Like Singing in the Rain for instance (still a great musical with catchy songs.) It isn't all about dancing and joy, it is about human nature and real life.
That is one of the things that makes it so touching and easy to relate to.

message 14: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) My mother bought for my sister so we could go to "sleep" to it because she said it was beautiful classical music which I can handle but all night long you gotta to be kidding. So there I was sulking because I hate listening to music, I wanted to talk to my sister instead when the beginning notes began and I was still sulking until that is until I heard the voices then I groaned because I used to hate choirs too. Until I heard the lyrics then I went nuts and haven't been the same since.

message 15: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Les Mis as sleep music? With all the shouting and DUN DUN DUN?
Wow. I tried that once actually. I didn't sleep, I just sang along til I got hyper.

But, it is a good thing in this case. Welcome to the group, Anna!

message 16: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) Well first of all it was at the end of the day so it wasn't the work song. Thanks.

message 17: by Juli (new)

Juli | 44 comments LOL

message 18: by Anna (new)

Anna (SylviaGrant) I could maybe fall sleep to it if it was just the music and not the words...but I would miss their voices so much I wouldn't care...only that I would be a zombie in the morning.

message 19: by Juli (new)

Juli | 44 comments haha same here... i'd be listening to the orchastrations without the words, trying to sleep, but i wouldn't be able to because i'd miss the words, then i'd put the words on and not be able to sleep because I'd be busy being a miserable fangirl

message 20: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Pretty much.
Moral of the story:
Les Mis is not for bedtime.

People actually find that LES MIS' makes them feel "miserable", literally ?! Are you serious?!
It has it's truly sad moments, several of them, but the story is kind and gentle and loving, how could anyone feel miserable from this piece?? I don't feel depressed at ALL watching Les Mis' (and I suffer from Depression badly). I find Les Mis' and it's message of redemption, mercy, love and generosity, to be absolutely exhilarating, and the Finale sends me into the 7th Heaven. Tomorrow, COME !!

message 24: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid No, Donald, this was a case of word-play. In the Les Miserables sense, Miserable is referring to when you first fell in love with the musical.

Way, oh, okay !!
Sorta like Rocky Horror Picture Show "virgins" (people who were attending the midnight show of
that insanely-wacky movie for the first time).
Thanks Way !! God bless, Donald :-)

When I was 8, and saw the 25th Anniversary Special. Have wanted to play Eponine on Broadway ever since.

Maybe we'll play them together!!!! Lol

Erica wrote: "okay, why do you want to play Eponine?"

Love her story, loving someone, but not being able to tell them, or have them love you back.

Her songs, On My Own, Plumet Attack, In My Life/Heart Full of Love, A Little Fall of Rain and One Day More!

message 29: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid In the book, when she died in front of Marius,it was something of a selfish act. I admit, in the musical, she's a very strong character! Eponine in the musical is great. However, I do not at all like her in the book.

Personally, I'd like to play Gavroche, but I know that I am A: too old, and B: definitely a girl. If I had any other choice, well, I'd want to play mostly the male roles. As a female, I'd like to play either Eponine or Cosette, probably Cosette.

Fantine is another absolutely amazing character. All that she went through... it's completely heartbreaking. If I could, I'd want to play her, but I don't think I would be able to do her justice and portray her as well as she needs to be played.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Eponine, as a child, was a total brat, and totally selfish to Cosette. But as she gets older, she gets to be a much kinder person.

Joanne (orientalflower) | 6 comments Fell in love with the musical as a teen. Made my little sister sing the songs with me: I was Valjean, she was Javert. I was Eponine, she was Marius. I was Cosette, she was Marius. Talk about bullying my poor sister!

Watched it three times on stage in London whenever I got to go on vacation there.

Loved the 1998 film, with Liam Neeson (Valjean), Geoffrey Rush (Javert) and Uma Thurman (Fantine).

Loved the recent movie. Adored Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway's portrayals, but also think Samantha Barks and Eddie Redmayne are terribly underrated for their performances. It probably won't win the Oscar for Best Picture, but we can always hope "that the sun will rise!"

message 32: by Elle (new)

Elle (perdufleur) I cannot completely remember when and how I became a miserable but one thing I remember is that I was really touched by the movie trailer and so, I've decided to read the brick. After that, I've watched the 10th and 25th Anniversary Special. It was great!

Kit Masters (kitmasters) | 1 comments I went on a school trip when I was twelve and fell asleep in the west end show.
I had no idea what it was about, so just couldn't follow or be interested.

But then I sat in my friends basement flat in 2007, at around twenty two, and read the thing cover to cover in three days... or rather three nights!
Loved it, and Hugo, since.

Mary-Therese P. The day: February 5, 2020
the setting: my moms car
the story: my friend and I were listening to music, and she had just seen the show, so she made me listen to On My Own. my mom loves Les Mis, so she told me the story, had me listen to the music, and I loved it.
then I saw the movie on February 21, 2020 and cried my eyes out, been obsessed ever since. read the book in June, 2020.

I am particularly crazy about the Society of the Friends of the ABC

message 35: by Cari (new)

Cari Legere (carithewriter) I listened to the soundtrack, then watched snippets from West End Live. I watched the musical movie and decided I desperately wanted to see the stage play. It was 2022, I believe, since that's when I really became a theatre kid
