Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments HMWY: Top 10 Annoying Characters
Are they truly annoying or just written that way?

Have you stopped reading a series or novel specifically because of one annoying character? Was s/he a main or side character? Were you rewarded with her/his death at some point in the series?

Note: I've checked the GR's new topic option 'this is a discussion question' and the little 'what is this' says "Members have the ability to vote answers up or down in a discussion question topic. Answers will be ordered by the most positive votes." No idea what to expect. So, I thought, Well, Let's try it out! :D

ETA: AhHa! Looks like I can only "answer once" b/c I "posed the question". Well, not sure if this'll work with this type of question, but let's give it a whirl. If it's bothersome or really messin' up the thread, I'll uncheck that option.

ETA2: Ok, this is just wacky. Not sure it's a +. Sorry, guys, but I can't uncheck the discussion question option. Augh! At least now we know.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I've run into more than a few annoying characters, but the one that made me not continue with the series was Aisling Grey. That chick drove me up a wall. I read the 1st two and couldn't stand her ditsy stupidity any longer. Jim the dog can only carry a series for so long. ;)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments I'll have to think about this one for a while, go through my read books. I know some characters in books I've read has annoyed, just can't think of them at the moment. XD

Dante Valentine! I hate that woman, and cannot think how she sustained a whole series. The bitch of it is that the subsidiary characters are fantastic (maybe that's it). Dante herself makes me go into screaming rant mode--I'll stop myself here. Did she die? God, I wish.

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments The whole cast of the Anita Blake series as they are at present, after Bullet.

Sidenote: We're "liking" comments now? I thought this was vetoed due to it's Facebook-like nature. Off to Feedback group to find out more...

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Ah Ha! I figured out how to turn off the yacky discussion question thingy. Phew! :)

But ... seems by doing so, we lost all the comments added to each post. Oi! :\

Sorry, guys. Thanks for barring with me as I tried to figure that new "feature" out.

Madison (madison2626) | 10 comments I will say Seth from Georgina Kincaid series, and I did stop reading the series because of him and thats creepy because Richelle Mead is a great writer :) Darn gone it :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments :) Mariya, thanks for hangin' in.

Hi, Madison ~ Welcome to the group! I've heard a lot of people say Seth is one of their most annoying characters. I've only read #1 in that series and didn't get a dweeb vibe from him ... yet.

Also, seems like several people are dropping Richelle Mead as a "at one-time auto-buy" b/c of him and how several of her other series have played out. Pity.

message 10: by Madison (new)

Madison (madison2626) | 10 comments Hello Steph, Glad to be part of your group :)

The 1,2 and the 3 books are really good but for me the 4th one was the one that messed all up. I still hope that the last book of the series some how it will make a difference and change my opinion.
I do love Richelle Mead writing style and I think that she has some great ideas. I still have a hope that she will redeem herself soon so I will not drop her all tough-ether ...bummer great writers they don't come by so often :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments :) Glad to have ya here!

Yeah, it is a shame. I enjoyed her VA series, but I certainly understand why others didn't. And, also loved her Dark Swan series, although the last one .... wanted to punt kick Eugenie. We'll see how #4 for that one is.

I'm interested to see how she does with the VA spin-off Bloodlines.

message 12: by Madison (new)

Madison (madison2626) | 10 comments I did not start VA yet I was to afraid after Kincaid series :)
But I did start Dark Swan, and I just finish the first book and I love it, but I do hope that I will not want to kick Eugenie at the end of the 3th book, helppppp:)

How was VA its worth to started?

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Apr 18, 2011 11:20PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I enjoyed it. It's definitely YA, but has some "hot for teacher" moments. I've heard a lot of positive and negative reviews, so I'm hesitant to push it on anyone. But, if you like her writing, don't mind a YA love triangle (which could've been omitted, IMO), you may enjoy it too.

message 14: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments @Madison: I agree with Steph, if you like the Kincaid series then you'll probably like VA too. IMO it is better than GK mainly because I pretty much hate Seth (Roman fan here). Really liked him in book #1&2 but the third, sheesh I got so angry! Dimitri, now there's someone who I can get on board with ;) Plus, all the books are out now (there's six) so no waiting around!

Some annoying characters (books are where I felt their annoying-ness the most):
Dante Valentine (Saint City Sinners)
Eve someone or other (To Hell and Back)
Seth (Succubus Dreams)
Eugenie (Storm Born - haven't read Iron Crowned yet...)
Luce (Fallen)
Daniel (Fallen)
The whole Twilight cast (Breaking Dawn)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL! "the whole Twilight crowd"

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments LOL okaiexz, Josie. I loved the Twilight Saga, but I have to agree wit you on Breaking Dawn. I was close to throwing that book across the room from utter frusteration. After honeymoon it was just lame!

message 17: by Laura Lulu (last edited Apr 24, 2011 06:17AM) (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I agree on Breaking Dawn. I liked the Twilights when I read them, but that was before I knew all this other great stuff was out there--if I read them now I'd probably hate them.

But Breaking Dawn was disgusting. It was one of the worst examples of an author wrapping her series up with a nice, big, fluffy bow. Every time I think of Super Bella I roll my eyes.

you know. I wonder if I would like it now if I was reading it for the first time. Maybe, maybe not. I have read so many other great things that succeed twilght, better YA. I think I'll always have a place in my heart for Twilight though, b/c it;s the reason I started reading.

message 19: by Madison (new)

Madison (madison2626) | 10 comments what u guys think about Merit from Chicagoland Vampires? Me at this moment I am close to grab her Katana and kick her special weird ass :)

message 20: by Mariya (last edited Apr 24, 2011 06:44PM) (new)

Mariya (cr6zym0nkeyiz) | 87 comments nope. I like her a lot. I would assume many people would say Ethan. I like most of all of the characters in the CLV series, but they have been the most complaints about Ethan from others that have read the series. I LOVE THEM ALL though XD

message 21: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I like Merit, too. But I wouldn't mind beating the crap out of her best friend & her boyfriend.

I'd buy tickets to see that!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL @ you both, Ames & Kristen!

message 25: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments Kiyo from Richelle Mead's Dark Swan series, completely annoying & untrustworthy.

But IMHO... @ the Seth haters... I love Richelle Mead's writing style and find her storylines creative and original... I even pulled out my bible when Roman appeared on the scene and the passage was in there. Trying to avoid spoilers, I was so angry at Seth that I wanted to toss the book across the room and my book buddy got some pretty nasty txt messages on the subject... It pulled some real emotions from me for both of these flawed characters. So for me that's kind of like "mission accomplished" for a writer & great job. What I like is that Seth is so not the typical Alpha male you find in UF/PNR, but I do like Roman too. I have to keep reading this one.

Did u read VA I think she does it again there. I think she really does a great job with her side characters . I do like her style but for me it kills a book when the hero, heroines cheats thats really cheep . In all her series has it. I do not understand that ,just a shame . :)

message 27: by Lis (last edited Apr 30, 2011 08:25AM) (new)

Lis | 4037 comments I did read VA even though I'm not a big YA reader. It dragged in the middle for me, but I liked it. I just picked it up this year, so I didn't have to wait to read thru the series, it might have been an advantage.

She does favor the love triange, but I have to keep reading and I can't put the book down. IMO, it might be that UF angle vs the PNR HEA ending? Or it might be that I discovered her only late last year so I got to read straight thru. Between this subject and the authors removed from "at one-time auto-buy" I was suprised because I really like Richelle Mead.

message 28: by Laura Lulu (new)

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) | 1603 comments I agree Madison. It's not just the love triangles, even though I'm not a huge fan of those. It's the cheating. In all three of Mead's series, the characters cheat. It was my biggest complaint with the Shifters series, also.

I am also not a huge fun of the love triangles, I think I like more books when they have more teasing ,playing around. I definitely hate cheating especial in books. U aspect more from a book, its enough that real live its so sick seeing in the books too it gets so frustrating. And It more frustrating when u see that in a good writer, I do not get her. Give me a freaking break , but I think it has something to do with the writer, like she wants to say that cheating its ok when he came across a huge love. For me its not ok no matter what. I do hope she will have a series without cheating :)

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments Bella Bella Bella from Twilight
She was just to needy and had to have everything her way.I almost didn't want to finish the series.

message 31: by Jojobean (new)

Jojobean | 104 comments I hated Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter, #5) by J.K. Rowling . I wanted to kill her.

All the characters in Slice of Cherry by Dia Reeves were horrible and very annoying

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Ana from 50 Shades of Grey, found her irritating, wishy-washy, the queen of mixed signals, irresponsible and obnoxious.

Dante Valentine - Hated that character, big time.

Dani from the Fever series

Faith from the Shifter series

Sabina from the Sabina Kane series
