In order to get the ball rolling and because Gundula is on the Pippi Longstocking books right now, I was wondering if we should begin there:

Pippi is Lindgren's most well-known creation and I'm assuming it will be the book that is not only the most familiar but probably also the most easy to acquire from a library/purchase point of view?

I like the idea. Do we read only Pippi Longstocking, or do we read the second and third book as well? I wouldn't mind reading the other two as well, we could make it a two month read, but I'm also alright with just reading the first book :-)

No, no I meant to read all three, I haven't read them in years!

I know them as Pippi Langkous komt thuis (Pippi comes Home), Pippi gaat aan Boord (Pippi Goes on Board) and Pippi in Taka-Tuka Land.

I'm having the devil of a time finding Dutch versions on Goodreads to review, but I will get them in English from the library, which will be new for me.

My library only has the first book, but I will now reread all of them in German (have not read them in German since I was a kid, it will be interesting how I like them, I actually liked the first book better now than I did when I was younger).

Literary Multitudes (literary_multitudes) | 6 comments I'd love reading and discussing Lindgren, but I'm also having a hard time fitting more books into my schedule...
I'd love to read the Ur-Pippi (that's the edition you're reading, isn't it, Gundula?), I have only actually read the Pippi-books once, maybe twice before.
But I really don't have the time right now... maybe in a few weeks I'll catch up...

You should read Ur-Pippi, it's excellent and not all that thick (on the other hand, my reading of it is stalled right now as well). I don't want to make this reading club or reading discussion of Lindgren's works too stressful, so I am hoping that we can get a relatively flexible time-line. Let's see what Suna has to say on this.

I'm perfectly fine with postponing a bit, in my enthusiasm I don't want to commit to too many things and then do none of them properly!

How about starting the first Pippi book halfway through May, I can post a reminder closer to the time?
And in the meantime we can have casual discussions on anything Lindgren if we have time...

That sounds fine and maybe leave it rather open-ended, I do have a lot of other book club reading to do in May. Although, I think I would rather read Pippi Longstocking again ...

message 9: by Brenda (new)

Brenda I am up for a reread of Pippi but would like to read the next books in the series as well. I am flexible with when we start but would appreciate a reminder as well.

I think that's what we are actually planning to do, not just to read Pippi Longstocking but also to read Pippi Goes On Board and Pippi in the South Seas. And I don't think it will matter in which language you read these books, although I am kind of hoping that I can compare the English and German texts a bit (unfortunately, my library system only seems to have the first book, sigh).

Hello, Hello,

It's been a while since I done anything in this group, but just so you know I'm not completely procrastinating, I am still awaiting my library copy of the first Pippi Longstocking book, which should have arrived two weeks ago.
Once I've read that, I will review both it and Pippi Goes Aboard and hopefully start a nice chat about them.

However, there's no great rush for anyone to catch up quickly or anything. :P

Hope you're all well and happy reading!

message 12: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks I'll start Pippi Longstocking as soon as I have cleared some of my currently-reading books (this may take a while, though).

message 13: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) Thanks Gundula-I was feeling so guilty about this group. I love Pippi and I follow the posts but I'm going to have to wait still a bit longer to clear out some of my currently-reading books- A list that has gotten embarrassingly and ridiculously long!

Gundula , Ellie!

Yes, I know how that feels, I'm in major catch-up mode right now...
So once again, no rush. ^^

Ellen (elliearcher) What's ^^ ?

I'm never going to learn all the net-talk! *despairingly*

I won't either, and I don't care :-) (I do like the smiley face, though).

Oh, ^^ is about as far as I grasp the lingo - I mostly hate it, too.

But ^^ is sort of a friendly, squeezy eyes face.....! :)

message 18: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I like it- ^^ Hmm.

I actually think a lot of "Netspeak" (I'm sure it has some official name, I just don't know what it is) is adorable. I just haven't learned it yet-& mostly forget what I do learn. :$

Ancestral Gaidheal (gaidheal) This just came up in an email from Goodreads:

"Pippi Moves In marks the first time that the legendary Pippi Longstocking comics by the famed children’s author and creator Astrid Lindgren and Danish illustrator Ingrid Vang Nyman will be published outside of Scandinavia in thirty years, as well as their first ever publication in English."

I did not even know there were Pippi Comics.

message 29: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Interesting idea. From Barnes and Noble The comics are re-imaginings of the classic chapter book stories and were originally published in the Swedish magazine Humpty Dumpty in 1957–1959.

That information, and more is posted at the profile for Pippi Moves In here at Goodreads, Brenda. I imagine it is a composite of what is available at various books sites. ;-D

Gosh, I had no idea there were comics either!
I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the information. ^^
