Columbia by Pamela Jekel

Just got this from the library and loaded the jacket blurb. You don't find much set in the Pacific Northwest, so I'm a bit curious to see how it is. The author has other historical novels, some with deep south settings, plus one set in Arizona on the Navajo. I've put in an ILL request but Pierce County had it Michele.

Carey (thetometraveller) | 109 comments Ordered it from PBS! This sounds really good, my great-grandparents lived on the Columbia River so I'd definitely like to read it.

Lol, Carey you have it bad don't you? :D

I was surprised to see that it will include the building of the Grand Coulee Dam, although my favorite sections of the Columbia is to the east of Portland. I just love it there. Gorgeous hiking. All those waterfalls. Macmennamins Edgefield for lunch and wine tasting. http://www.mcmenamins.com/Edgefield

About half way through and enjoying it. It's written in a Michner like fashion, short bits of different bits in time and then moving on to another generation. First major section with the Chinook Indians as the first boats start coming and the trading forts begin. The second with the Whitman massacre. Now in the late 1800's and mixed with the Chinese coming into the Portland area. More in a couple of days.

Michele, I think you might be interested in this one as well.

Almost done, and I've really enjoyed this but those not familiar with the area/history might feel a bit lost. The plans for damming the river are going full bore at the moment. Interesting bit is that Woody Guthrie did a song for the Bonneville Power Admin promoting the whole bit. Found this video at You Tube. Not live, but some lovely shots of my very favorite river, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20ZffI...

I wish there were still images/photos of the river before it was dammed. As beautiful as it is now, what a sight it must have been to see it running free in all it's glory.
