Monya (monyamary) Did anyone see the two part dramatisation of Moby Dick on the A.B.C. a couple of weeks ago? Superb! Except Ethan Hawke as Starbuck had nothing to do but stand around and look grim/unhappy/disapproving. Other performances superb, and computer images generated a wonderful new dimension for the story. Much better than the old Gregory Peck movie, IMO.

Michael (knowledgelost) Didn't watch it; have to read the book first

Bring it on. I love that bear and his friends!

But, Michael, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is released in July. Actually, just over a week from now.
*Hyperventilating*
Ive got my ticket for the midnight session right in front of me :) So excited. Im going with four other friends. Dressing up and all. KEEEEEN.

Also, The Hunger Games comes out on March 23 next year. Something to live for after Harry Potter, though it'll never be as good. Im excited because this will not only make a terrific movie, but Jennifer Lawrence is Katniss-and shes amazing.

message 4: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments haha I will :)
Its just a bit tragic. The film starts at midnight, but we're getting together at 2 in the afternoon for various activities :D

message 5: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Hopefully. Early night before that. Bed time like, 7:00

message 6: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Its too much for me! We were on the computers at school today, and saw live coverage of the red carpet at the grand premier. Its been and gone now. People have already seen it! I CANT WAIT!!!!!

On the plus side, its got terrific early reviews: 'Oustanding...exciting...thrilling...monumental...satisfying" just to name a few im looking at the moment :D

message 7: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments :D It does indeed.
Last year, in our maths lesson, there was a massive argument: which is better, Star Wars or Harry Potter. There was full on shouting and everything :)
Teacher was not impressed...

message 8: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Nah Harry Potter won :) Everybody except you and Knowledge love Harry Potter :D

★ Jess | 3071 comments Anybody see that Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part II is now the third highest grossing film ever, behind just Avatar and Titanic :)

message 19: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments The best movie adaption is clearly that of Winter's Bone

Michael (knowledgelost) Michael wrote: "The Great Gatsby will be coming to cinemas in May. It will feature Leonardo Dicaprio, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher and was was filmed in Sydney."

While it looks great, I see two mistakes in the trailer.
1) Gatsby drinking at a party (never happens in the book)
2) Gatsby using the pool for swimming (also never happens in the book)

Michael (knowledgelost) I want a faithful adaptation, I love the book and expect it to be perfect :P

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

Im happy with Leo being shirtless as often as he needs to be hahaha

message 26: by Michael (new)

Michael (knowledgelost) while not 100% faithful, there are plenty of faithful adaptations out there

message 27: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments The Walking Dead tv series is pretty perfect. A little different, but much better than the comics so far.
The Walking Dead, Vol. 1: Days Gone Bye - The Walking Dead, Vol. 5: The Best Defense

Mish | 3600 comments Hi all I thought I'd get this thread going again.

What books do you know about that are being made into a movie or TV series?

Or are there any good ones that you've seen this year?

I've heard it's in production too Michael...it will definitely be great - IF they follow the book!!

That's one of the main reasons I don't watch movies which have been made from books...they wreck them for you!

message 31: by Mish (new)

Mish | 3600 comments Michael wrote: "Im still waiting for when we are going to see Before I Go To Sleep on the big screen. It is supposed to be in production but that is all i have heard and Nicole Kidman is playing Christine."

Yes they are taking their time with that movie. I do like the choice of Nicole Kidman as Christine.

I'm worried about what they are going to do to the Dark Tower. It is out in a couple of weeks and I have a bad feeling about it.

That's Stephen King's isn't it Phrynne?

That's the one. Well it's a whole series of course. I'm not sure how much of the series they are going to squish into one movie.

I recently read Salmon Fishing in the Yemen having enjoyed the movie very much a while back. Well I enjoyed the book too but they were SO different. People actually died in the book and the same people lived happily ever after in the film. Fairly radical differences!

The Hobbit was good though. I am going to get the DVD just to watch Bilbo and Gollum playing riddles again.

Why do they keep making the same movies over and over again? I mean Romeo and Juliet - again -really?

Michael (knowledgelost) Hollywood ran out of original ideas a long time ago

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 60 comments I'm really wondering about Baz Luhrman's The Great Gatsby? Will it be a masterpiece or totally over the top...

My bet is on "over the top"

Me too. The trailer is not inspiring.

And I can stop worrying about The Dark Tower because it seems to have disappeared into fantasyland. The gunslinger must have shot all the cast and crew.

message 46: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Carrie-So keen, the trailer looks great!
The Hobbit Part II- I have no doubt this will be better than the first. Excited.
World War Z-Not expecting great things, but I will still see it I reckon
Catching Fire-Yes, yes yes yes yes yes
Great Gatsby-Expecting it to be pretty average, but the soundtrack is gorgeous & I will defs see it.

★ Jess | 3071 comments What are you talking about, the trailer is incredible. Especially the three songs they use

I also enjoyed both, but I agree, radical differences. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is another one where the book and movie differed markedly. Both enjoyable, but radically different.

Well, occasionally they notice another book: Life of Pi was worth seeing as a movie, IMHO

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9974 comments Recently watched the TV series of A Fortunate Life (borrowed from the library) which was quite good, lots of Aussie actors, some of it a bit wooden. Currently doing my ironing to the TV series of Seven Little Australians: quite good so far, Leonard Teale makes a great Captain Woolcot.
