Here are some common and uncommon holidays for June. (The dates listed are the dates of each actual holiday. You have the entire month to read however many you choose.)

June 1st - Flip a Coin Day. Pick 2 books, then flip a coin and to see which one you're to read.

June 8 - Best Friends Day - Pick a book to read off one of your GRs friends shelves. (If you don't have many GRs friends, then pick off one of our member's shelves.)

June 8 - Name Your Poison Day - Read a book with "poison" or a type of poison named in the title, or a mystery where a poison is mentioned or used in the book.

June 18 - National Splurge Day - Read the most recent mystery book you've purchased. Or splurge and purchase a new book and then read it!

June 28 - Paul Bunyan Day - Read a book that's 400 or more pages (as Paul Bunyan was huge) or read a book with a blue cover (in honor of his companion, a huge blue bull named Babe).

Enjoy!

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 232 comments Now do we have to read those books on those dates, or sometime during June. I like the challenge. They are so different. Thanks

The dates listed are the dates of that paricular odd holiday. You have the entire month to read any (or all) of the above. It's up to you how many you want to read. I just listed the dates of the funny holidays.

Your welcome Marisa. It's fun to see what odd holidays or monthly celebrations pop up on my search, and then see how I can turn them into reading challenges. This month should be easier as you basically get alot of reader's choice. Although I'm more likely to pick a blue covered book than one over 400 pages this month. :)

Paula | 104 comments These look like fun, I'm going to try and do at least a couple of them!

Well, Briansgirl! I think I'll cover more than 400 pages and blue cover with A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy #1) by Deborah Harkness , but I'm not sure ;)

That would most definetly fit both halves of that challenge (although you only have to do one). Good luck with that one. Looks good actually. But with 1002 people wishing for it on PBS before me, will take ages for me to get it. oohh Library has it and I'm first in queue. :)

As long as it's a library book, I won't feel like I wasted money on it if it turns out bad. I heard alot of praise for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, even People magazine recommended it. I gave it three chapters and was so utterly bored to tears I gave up. Thankfully, that was also a library book.

message 12: by Karen B. (new)

Karen B. (raggedy11) | 232 comments Well I have a confession to make. After all the hype I looked forward to reading The Room, but I had to stop and put it on another shelf. I'm sure it IS good but I just had problems with it. Now that's a book for my shelf of self-reproach, Ellie.

Karen B wrote: "Can one book count twice? I ordered a book that has poison so it is a splurge book and a poison book. *LOL*"

Technically a book can only count once for each challenge. However, you can cross challenge and use a book on more than one challenge. I think the best I've ever cross challenged was getting one book to fill a category on five different challenges once.

Do remember though, that you don't have to read all 5 of these each month. It's however many you feel you can do, or want to try for.

Chris Curtis (cjccur) | 68 comments I flipped a coin between a book by our June featured author MC Beaton or something else. MC Beaton won and since I have already read and loved all the Agatha Raisin books I'm going to start the Hamish MacBeth series. Death of a Gossip (Hamish Macbeth, #1) by M.C. Beaton

I'm also going to start The Plains of Passage (Earth's Children, #4) by Jean M. Auel which certainly qualifies as a Paul Bunyan read. I'm not sure I will be able to finish by July though.

Only if someone else doesn't have it on hold. Although... I hate to do this, but.... this summer is free fridays at the library. Any and all books returned on a friday throughout June and July will have ALL fines cancelled out. So where normally if I kept it over it's due date I'd be charged late fees... as long as I returned it on a friday... I'd be okay.

Only about 30 or 40 pages into this 500+ page book but so far its very good. I read one review that said it was like a cross between Twilight for adults and the DaVinci Code. I've read Angels & Demons, but not the DaVinci Code, and the entire Twilight Saga and so far I'd say that's a pretty good comparison. It's got supernatural creatures in it (Witches, Vampires, and Daemons), bit of a love story, alot of intrigue and a mystery that was lost to time and now unearthed. A Discovery of Witches
