Anne Schüßler (anneschuessler) | 847 comments Huh. That was a great episode. Makes me wish I had liked the book more, because I like NKJ a lot. She seems like a really smart and cool person.

Kind of torn about The Hunger Games being the next choice, but only because I've already read it. I loved it, so I have no complaints there. At least it gives me a bit more time to get throught the Song of Ice and Fire books.

message 3: by Nick (new)

Nick (whyzen) | 1295 comments Yeh, I got the idea from the way Veronica said "You guys voted and if you didn't vote its your own fault" that it wasn't her first choice either. I'm happy with it, I'm about a third of the way through The Hunger Games and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm rushing a bit to finish this book to get back to A Clash of Kings but I'm betting I might after I finish "Clash of Kings" be taking a little time to finish the Hunger Games Trilogy even if it means I'm late in getting caught up for A Dance with Dragons.

Jason G Gouger (jason_g) | 50 comments I didn't even know there was voting going on! But I've been meaning to read that series anyway...sooo...off we go.

I'll read it after I'm done with my A Clash Of Kings re-read probably.

Loved the interview. NKJ was really cool to listen to!

Actually, it *would* have been my first choice if I hadn't already read it. It hasn't been that long since I finished it, so hopefully I will remember enough for the upcoming discussions.

Sean O'Hara (seanohara) | 2365 comments I've read The Hunger Games before as well. Except for some reason my copy was called Battle Royale and was by a Japanese guy.

I actually voted for it, I was just covering my ass. :)

I just started reading Clash of the Kings. How are you finding your re-read?

I've only see the movie version of Battle Royale, but I think it will be interesting to compare how The Hunger Games sets things up.

Really enjoyed the NKJ interview, too - the chances of my reading the sequels have significantly increased.

And special thanks to Josh, who helped me figure out our new flash player on the blog!

That's happened to me with other authors too.

toria (vikz writes) (victoriavikzwrites) A great interview

I too have yelled obscenities at a SquareSpace blog over that problem, so fortunately I had a solution at hand. :)

Dezmond Finney | 11 comments That was a great episode, Tom and Veronica. Thanks everybody for great questions. I have lurked around here long enough! It's my coming out party and I will definitely be more active around here. S&L folks are really cool.

Welcome!!

And.... bring on the apocalypse! I'll enjoy re-reading The Hunger Games so I can get a refresher on where the first book ends.

message 18: by Nathan (new)

Nathan (forjay) | 51 comments Thank you for asking my question about outlines and story bible. I really like the author interview episodes, even when I don't like the book that much.

To clarify (since there was some confusion) a story bible is the place to keep all your notes on characters, setting, etc. that don't end up in the final story. It sounds like Jemisin uses a wiki for that. I have heard of some authors (J. K. Rowling, e. g.) who have story bibles almost as long as or longer than their finished stories.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Oh yeah and thanks for making an eloquent question out of my bumbling, Veronica. I remember wanting to know more about the Naha thing but couldn't figure out a way to ask it without a spoiler, and never went back to it.

Hey, Overdrive users, it looks like The Hunger Games is on that list, I just placed a hold on the audiobook at my library, although I do still have 2 audible credits....

message 20: by David (new)

David (lawki) | 51 comments Great interview. Thanks, Tom, Veronica and N.K! Definitely looking forward to learning more about the 100k kingdoms world soon.

I voted for the Hunger Games. I also ordered two Steve Erickson novels to pad my package (I know how that sounds), because it'd be rude not to.

message 21: by Beth (new)

Beth (petersonb12) | 40 comments Great interview! I loved that she said Tolkien was influenced by being white and that she explicitly addressed the fact that in a patriarchal society male is the norm and female is the variation, influencing the way writers, male and female, write female characters. We always ask women and writers of color (or queer writers or other marked categories) how being female or being a person of color influences their writing but appear to not notice that maleness and whiteness (unmarked categories) are also influences--we just accept those as the "normal" perspective, the average, regular.

Got Hunger Games from Audible last year and just finished listening to the trilogy again a few weeks ago but looking forward to the discussion.

Nice! I read that one too, but mine said Lord of the Flies on the cover, or was it The Running Man, I can't remember.

Yet another great episode by the way. I guess my question about N.K.'s sex scene wasn't worth asking, now I actually want to know, not that I didn't before but now I really want to know.

To borrow a phrase from the World of Warcraft forums ... "Bad Trolls are bad".

There aren't many books that don't borrow ideas or concepts from others. As long as the retelling has its own spin and is done well it doesn't bother me.

I didn't mean to knock it, I read it last year and thoroughly enjoyed it and I plan to reread it now. Also I used to play a Troll when I played WoW.

Nick (whyzen) | 1295 comments hehe .. the phrase is in reference to forum trolls who say something in the forums solely for the purpose of getting people riled up and irate in forum responses.

Oh I see, you're implying Sean's a forum troll...

And on that note, I'm off to Paris in an hour or so. Depending on internet access I may or may not be around to troll the forums next week.

message 28: by Robert (new)

Robert M (rfmdevil73) | 12 comments I started listening to S&L because of Game of Thrones. This podcast is the 1st that I've listened to the whole podcast & not one mention of Game. Thank you for interviewing Jemisin & thank you Jemisin for mentioning 'The Tough Guide to Fantasyland.' That book high on my list. From the sounds of it, I think it's save to say that it describes how I feel about RPG games. Even though it about fantasy books, I know I'll enjoy reading The Tough Guide of Fantasyland.

message 34: by David (new)

David (lawki) | 51 comments Yeah, I suspect the quiet T & V is due to their minds being blown by the length of Skyrim... And even that is not as long as Hodor's *ahem*!
