So, what is the book about?

The first book in my "Sons of Avalon" series begins with the mysterious birth of Merlin, and climaxes with the conception of Arthur...the future High King of Britain.

What makes this version of the Arthurian Legends unique?

"Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy," follows the traditional Arthurian Legends, but with several plot twists.

The main plot revolves around a young Merlin, and his struggles to come to grips with the enormous burden his mother placed upon him when he was born...giving his spirit to the land on which he was born; entrusting him to be the protector of Britain and Britons for all eternity.

The tale also delves into the struggles of a young Sir Lot, and the story behind his rise to power and prevalence in the court of three High Kings.

A constant underlying plot is the clash of personalities between Lot and Merlin, fueled by the odd mixture of jealousy and loyalty. While both characters are complex, Lot is by far the most complicated character in the series.

Another subplot revolves around a renegade knight who plots a murderous revenge.

Please feel free to ask questions, or post your opinions...

Understanding The Characters:

Sir Lot

Some readers perceive Sir Lot as the villain of the story. Although all the characters in the Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy have moments of good and bad behavior, no one is all good or all bad; they all possess and display human flaws.

Lot does many un-noble deeds, yet, he believes that he is doing them for a noble cause. Perhaps that is the true evil. Believing in a cause without taking into account the full extend of chaos caused by actions of perceived nobility.

I like Lot. In fact, next to Merlin, Lot is my favorite character. Both characters are driven, yet lot is by far more complex. In Turn, that makes him the most dangerous, and the most vulnerable. Throughout the story, he makes several crucial errors of judgment, which results in the death and destruction of those around him.

There is a constant struggle in Lot to conceal his vulnerability, to show no outward emotion, to remain untouched by others—both physically and emotionally.

Merlin

One thing to keep in mind when reading Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy, although Merlin has the gift of ancient prophecy, he is still but a boy trapped in a young man's body.

A great burden was placed upon Merlin, and he is myopic in the completion of his quest of the creation (and protection) of Britain's Treasure. When he meets Ambrosius for the first time, he feels a mystical connection. Abandoned at birth, Merlin longs for a parental figure, and he finds that family connection within the charismatic young High King, Ambrosius.

Uther, Ambrosius’ younger brother, on the other hand, is jealous of Merlin, and deeply resents sharing his brother with anyone, especially the young boy prophet. This results in a bitter conflict between Merlin and Uther.

Merlin’s other adversary is Sir Lot. From their first meeting, Lot and Merlin are bitter enemies, as Lot is instrumental in the tragedy that flows into Merlin’s life. Yet, Lot and Merlin mirror each other in many ways. While Ambrosius takes Merlin under his protective wing, Uther does the same to Lot. So, in essence, each of the brothers pits boy against boy.

Although Merlin’s first love is Britain, he is infatuated with the young fairy priestess, the Lady Nimue. She unbalances his reasoning. She makes his heart beat in unusual ways. She mystifies him, as only true love can.

He trust no one, with the exception of his best friend Lionel, and he is the one person that Merlin trusts unconditionally.

Merlin can be moody and broody. He is always thinking and always planning, working through his forward visions. He takes his quest seriously, and will do anything to bring his visions to fruition.
