Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments I started rereading the series this year. I've read most of them 12-15 years ago in Dutch. Last week I read The Cat Who Played Post Office and I'm planning on reading ""Knew Shakespeare" this or next week.

This year I want to read at least half of the series, so the first 15 books.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I keep forgetting I could borrow these books from the library... *face palm*

I've been buying the series in 3 book hb omnibuses from Amazon (I've got prime shipping) for $3.99 or so each with free shipping. It's equaling to about $1 per story.

message 7: by Wyndslash (new)

Wyndslash | 6 comments i would have liked to be able to buy the books myself, but i'm on a tight budget :) $1 per story isn't bad at all!

message 8: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Yeah, I thought so, too. It's definitely the story I'm telling my husband when he asks. :D

message 9: by Wyndslash (new)

Wyndslash | 6 comments LOL!

message 10: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Yeah. I'm a sucker for hb. A real sucker.

I've only bought 3 (the first 9 books) omnibuses so far. I'm not going crazy cause my budget is pretty limited, too. And my husband likes to do stuff like call me up and say "You spent ____ on what??

message 11: by Wyndslash (new)

Wyndslash | 6 comments it should be okay if it's books xP there are worse things to spend your money on xP

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments A quick update:

I've been doing good with this challenge! I think the break from all the fantasy has felt good. :)

I've read:

The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern by Lilian Jackson Braun The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern
The Cat Who Turned On and Off The Cat Who Turned On and Off (Cat Who..., #3) by Lilian Jackson Braun
The Cat Who Saw Red (Cat Who..., #4) by Lilian Jackson Braun The Cat Who Saw Red

And I'm currently working on The Cat Who Played Brahms The Cat Who Played Brahms (Cat Who..., #5) by Lilian Jackson Braun

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Ok! I've finished The Cat Who Played Brahms The Cat Who Played Brahms (Cat Who..., #5) by Lilian Jackson Braun !

Here's my summery for the series so far:

I'm really enjoying this reading challenge - this is the 5th book in the series and Qwill, Koko and Yum Yum have finally arrived in Mooseville.

There are a few things - throughout the series so far - that I've noticed that sort of dates these first few books: the treatment of women. There are several references sprinkled here and there in which the reader can really tell that these books were written in the late '60s and early 70s. The most telling of which is the idea of female reporters. The newspaper that Qwill works for - The Daily Fluxton - has a "women's department."

Other than that (and the obvious lack of cell phones/TVs in every room) this series has a certain timeless feel. I enjoy that.

Bianca van Willigenburg (biancavw) | 1749 comments Earlier this week I finished The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare.

I really liked it. The earlier books were pure mysteries. In later books, especially since arriving in Moose County, the story about the people and the town have also become important.

Oooh! You're a couple of books ahead of me. I still haven't finished The Cat Who Played Post Office. :)

I totally agree, I've been pushing to get to Mooseville. I have lots of fond memories of Mooseville.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I finally read The Cat Who Played Post Office. As always, loved it. The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare (Cat Who..., #7) by Lilian Jackson Braun is next.

message 18: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I finished up The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare (Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit) by Lilian Jackson Braun last night. I'm currently reading The Cat Who Sniffed Glue (Cat Who..., #8) by Lilian Jackson Braun .

message 19: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I buy tons of books by authors I've never read all the time. Especially if there's a sale... :)

Have you tried Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series? It starts with Moon Called.

message 20: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments I've only read two but I've loved both of them. I own all of them already, lol. They are action urban fantasy with a kick-ass heroine.

message 21: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments Good deal! I think you'll enjoy them.

I've been thinking about a couple of new challenges, too. The one I've been pondering is a "Vampires don't sparkle" challenge. I want to read a some different books where vampires aren't portrayed as nice and good. So far I've got:

The Darkangel Trilogy
Monster Hunter Alpha

but that's it. Still working on it.

message 22: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, Resident Book Pusher (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 3289 comments lol! I agree, I don't do horror either. *shudder*

The Darkangel Trilogy is YA - the hero is a regular guy who is turned into a type of spirit vampire. But that's just the beginning. Anything else is spoilers. :)

Monster Hunter Alpha is book 3 in a series of action Urban Fantasy. It's really fun. For my challenge if anyone wanted to join they could pick their own books - my only thing is that the vampire can't be the hero.
