Chrissie For those of us interested in talking about different browsers, this thread is for that purpose!

I was fed up with Internet Explorer, so I installed both Google Chrome and Firefox, thus having three on my computer. What I then did was to compare different pages in the three browsers, flipping between the three. Inernet Explorer was the slowest and the font was thinner. All three browsers let you change font size, but the results are wuite different. Google Chrome has a spell-check that functions. An older version of Firefox has spell-check too, but it seems not to be functioning in the newest version. I assume this will soon be fixed.... I think I will be choosing Firefox as my default browser. I still do not understand what the add-ons will give me. If someone uses add-ons in Firefox, I would like to know which you have added and why?

We can talk about anything related to browers here. In the beginning I didn't even know what a browser was. Lisa, helped me out!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I can't wait to try Chrome when I get my new computer.

Now, I usually use Safari, and my backup browser is Firefox. I'll be getting newer versions of them when I get a new computer. As they are now, Firefox might be more versatile but Safari is much faster.

Chrissie, I do know that every browser allows you to set your preferences for default font, font size, minimum font size allowed to be displayed, etc.

Hopefully, there will be lots of good tips for all of us in this thread.

Chrissie Lisa, I am kind of fumbling my way along. I don't quite know what I am doing. With firfox I have noted that you zoomin to get larger and largerfont. I wish someone would explain these add-ons. I haven't added any yet.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, Rivka uses a lot of them. You can ask her in the thread on your review where she's commented if nobody here chimes in with enough information.

Darkpool | 222 comments I use firefox mainly, and Chrome when firefox is driving me nuts. I have a bunch of add-ons. I think my favourite is lazarus, which fixes the problem of "the internet ate my review!!" Two amazing things about it are that it is available for chrome (once i finally found the add-ons for chrome) as well as firefox, and that the company that wrote it was from poor old earthquake ravaged Christchurch, NZ (although I think they've relocated to Wellington now. But don't quote me on that). I also love foxclocks, which tells me what the time is in different places in the world, NewTabKing, which makes it easier to navigate to my most commonly visited pages, Chromeview, which opens the current page in Chrome for those times firefox goes uncooperative, Voyage, which helps me work out what the page I was on last night was... I also love read it later and adblockplus. And session manager. Ok, maybe I'm just a little addicted...
The reason I love these add-ons is that they make it easier for me to do the stuff I want to do on the web. I'm sure there are heaps of others I could be using as well, but I am trying to show a little restraint!

Chrissie Lisa, I responded to Rivka on my review of Between Shades of Gray.

Darkpool, is there an add-on that makes all the letters darker? I make them bigger by "zooming in" several times. However if you make them too big the letters overlap in some places.I am so lost dealing with the new browser Firefox that I am scared of adding anything lovely but not absolutely necessary!

There is a Google Search box, but since I live in Belgium it delivers everything in Dutch. How can I tell Firefox I want EVERYTHING in English?

And what is on the Google Tool Bar? I forggot to ask this of Rivka....

Lazarus does sound important. I will see if I can find it. Does it happen often that you write a review and then it is gone? Sounds terrible. That has never happened to me on IE.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie,

I think you can set your default language to English in the preferences.

I'm not sure about bold but all browsers let you choose which font and font size you want to use, and also the minimum size font to ever be shown.

I saw your message to Rivka, Chrissie, I hope she gets back with a detailed list and information. Hope the Comfort Reads people also have ideas to share.

Chrissie Lisa, I am just so happy that the computer is acting healthy again. I will look around Firefeox more. I haven't been able to figure out where to do set these preferences.

message 9: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Chrissie, I have a completely different version than Firefox, etc. browsers than you, but generally when you're in the browser, where it says Firefox on the top left of the screen click hold on that, and preferences should be under that menu. Just click on where it says preferences. There are generally a bunch of tabs to set from there.

Chrissie That does not work. I have found such varaibles under tools and then options.I wonder if the lighter gray text can be changed in the option alternatives? I wish I knew more. I do not want to mess everything up.

Rivka said I could maybe install an earlier version instead. I am a little bit worried that all the problems I had yesterday will reappear..... I sure would like the spell-check and the Google Tool Bar.

Irene (smilingi) | 6 comments I use Safari, Firefox and Chrome depending on what I am doing. I like them all for different reasons. Won't touch Explorer, too dangerous.

Irene (smilingi) | 6 comments Chrissie, I checked out the spell check in Firefox version 5.0 if you click on Firefox (on the top bar) then preferences, then advanced, in the browsing section there is the choice to check spelling while typing. I tried it here, if I spell a word incorrectly it will show as underlined in red. Hope that helps. It was also in version 4.0.1 Good luck

Chrissie Irene, when I click on the top left hand side of the blue bar that says Mozilla Firefix Start Page, or anywhere else on that blue bar, I only have the choices Restore, Minimize or Close. I do not get Preferences!

What am I doing wrong?!!!

I need the spell-check b/c it is difficult to see the lighter gray letters in the comment box visible as you write the comment.

There are sevenwords listed horizontally below the blue bar: file, edit, view, history, bookmarks tools and help. If I click on Tools, then Options then General, there is a box that says "check my spelling as I type". That box is checked!!! So why doesn't it work?! I must say I feel like kicking this dam computer.

Rivka says the latest version is 4. But when I tried to install the Google Tool Bar it said this was impossible for version 5. How do I know what version I have? You see, I do not know much of anything. Depressing......

Irene (smilingi) | 6 comments Hey Chrissie no problem, all computer screens look a little different. The top bar I was talking about has Firefox, File, Edit, View, History etc. on it. but that is on a MAC, I just opened it on the Windows machine, I think you may have Firefox on the very top bar on your screen, the only thing on the bar, try clicking on that and going to options, and under advanced the spell check is there... hope this one helps. On the windows machine the Firefox button is orange on my machine it may be slightly different on yours. Good luck.

Chrissie Irene, the weird thing is that I have clicked the box that enables spell-check when I write. It still doesn't work!

Thanks for trying to help me.

I have a Dell computer.
