Who was my favorite character?
As the author, I would have to say that I liked all of the characters to some degree. However, as in life, none of the characters were pure good or pure evil, they all had human flaws. With that said, my two favorite characters were/are Merlin and Sir Lot.
Merlin because he is my muse. Sir Lot because of his complex personality.
Who did I love to hate?
That would have to be Uther. He was unpredictable.
Who did I have the most empathy for?
Lionel was the character that I had the "most" empathy for. With his unconditional loyalty, he never ceased to touch my emotions.
If I could pick only three characters to return in the next book of the "Sons of Avalon" series, who would they be?
Well, that is a very unfair question for me to answer, as I already know which characters are coming back. [insert sly evil grin here:]
Which minor character did I want to know more about?
I would say Nentres. I liked Nentres, yet little was revealed in the first book about his background, nor expectations concerning his future.
Ok, now it is your turn...I look forward to your input.

Well, I am doing the rewrites for the second book in the "Sons of Avalon" series, and Lot is at it again. As much as I try to keep him out of trouble, and write in the the right direction, he just HAS to do what he wants to do!
He is my number-one bad boy!

If I could pick only three characters to return in the next book of the "Sons of Avalon" series, who would they be?
Merlin, Ambrosius, and Lot
Whick Character did I want to know more about?
Lot, what he's been through, his personality....
Sir Lot holds a very special place in my heart. (I would imagine that it is not unlike Stephenie Meyer’s feelings for Jacob).
Lot is one of “the” misunderstood! Lot is a realist, he has a military mindset. I think that is why he attached himself to Uther.
Lot’s mother died when giving birth to him. His father (King of the Orkney Islands) was a cold and brutal man. He blamed Lot of the death of his wife, and never truly loved his only child, his only son.
As a baby, Lot received little affection from anyone…and he hated to be touched. He hated to be touched physically or emotionally. Today we would call this Aphephobia (a phobia of personal contact).
The custom in medieval times was for kings to send their sons away to be “fostered” within the households of other kings. So, when High King Vortigern offered to “foster” Lot at the age of 8, in exchange for Lot’s father’s protection of the Northern Shores, of course Lot’s father agreed eagerly.
As stated in the beginning of the book, Lot was one of the few young men who strived in the harsh military environment of High King Vortigern’s stronghold.
The High King, for all his faults, knew how to manipulate men, how to mold young vulnerable minds. Vortigern saw something special in Lot, even at a young age… Vortigern knew that Lot always strived to be the best … at everything. Vortigern also saw that Lot inspired other boys to be their best. Other, even older boys, looked up to Lot for leadership. So, Vortigern, took advantage of Lot’s inner needs, creating a group of young men for Lot to lead, to manipulate… The Young Royal Guard...which ironically, included two of Vortigern’s illegitimate sons.
Yet, Lot, like Merlin, had one true love…Britain! For that is one thing that was instilled in him from birth…love your country first...all loves comes after!
As stated above, Lot was raised as a realist, he is not a pagan thinker, he does not believe in magic. He puts little faith in prophecies. He lives in the here and now. His heaven and earth is Britain. He believes in one person…himself...he had to believe in himself, to survive. His father didn’t believe in him. Lot is intelligent, and he was bright enough to realize that Vortigern only believed in him, for Vortigern’s own means.
Although Lot orchestrates many bad deeds, he does it for the good of Britain…he follows orders that he believes will be for the better of Britain. In Uther, he finds the father figure that he never had. Uther is the one person of authority that shows Lot respect! Their relationship is as powerful, if not more so, than the relationship of Merlin and Ambrosius.
Lot does make two fatal “errors of judgment.” Those errors destroy a dream, nearly destroy a country! He makes these mistakes due to friendship. Lot is not a murderer. He may command other to kill, but deep inside he is loyal to a cause, loyal to his friends. This is most apparent with his treatment of Meleagant. As his young and innocent friend slowly spirals into insanity, it is Lot who is always there to protect him, make excuses for him.
Lot is the most complicated of all the character, I don’t want to go into the last part of the book, as I do not wish to give the plot away.
But, deep down, Lot is not bad. He does bad things, but he does them for what he perceives are honorable reasons. Lot is not evil...but Lot “is” dangerous!

Ahh, but Merlin and Sir Lot will always be archenemies. In Merlin’s mind he knows that a person has free choice…a person can always decide which orders to follow…which to disobey.
Sir Lot could have stopped the murder of Merlin’s foster parents…but he didn’t.
Merlin can never forgive him for that. No matter what Merlin’s mother said.
As to Lot, he is jealous of Merlin. He envies Merlin, as all the High Kings have come to count on Merlin for his prophecies. Sir Lot wants what he perceives Merlin has…respect and adoration!

To Merlin, regardless of Lot's past, Lot was still a participant in his foster parents murder and as such should not be trusted. Add to that, Lot's jealously of Merlin, and Merlin is wise to be wary of Lot.
Reminds me of some of the stories I've seen about inmates in jail. Yes, you can feel sorry for them and understand why they did terrible things. But, it doesn't change the fact they committed aweful acts and are simply not trustworthy.

Plus, it is easy to like the good guy.
It takes a special person to get into the head of the "bad guy."
Although I really do not feel that Lot is really bad. He just does bad things. There is a difference.
