This one is pretty self-explanatory: What are you reading this summer? What book are the books you simply can't put down?

message 2: by Mench (new)

Mench | 1 comments Right now I am reading my way through the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin (currently on Book 4). I read Call me Irresistable the moment it became available on Kindle and loved it. Am a big fan of romance (paranormal, fantasy, contemporary - you name it) but also enjoy books from other categories.

message 3: by Quyen (new)

Quyen (kennguyen) | 1 comments i want to read all Judith McNaught 's books, she is my fav author

message 4: by Berry (new)

Berry Payne | 3 comments Best book that I have read this summer is To Be Sung Underwater by Tom McCall. I can not say enough good about this book! And my second favorite A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.

Girls Gone Reading (girlsgonereading) | 1 comments My favorite summer read, so far, is Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan. It starts out slowly, but it grabs you and becomes fantastic!

message 6: by Jan (new)

Jan | 4 comments It is very hard for me to choose just one "favorite". At this point in time, I think "Little Bee" by Chris Cleave would have to be the one I'd choose. I will never put gas in my car again without thinking about the two women in this novel.

message 7: by Heather in FL (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) I loved The Help by Kathryn Stockett . Technically, I listened to it, but it was a great story. I can't wait for the movie.

message 8: by Jan (new)

Jan | 4 comments I, too, loved "The Help".. The characters where developed so well and the story line really made me think. I wasn't sure at first if I wanted to watch the movie, as I have such wonderful pictures in my mind of the settings and the characters.... but now, as time goes by, I am rethinking this!! Wonderful actresses playing the parts so I may just cave and watch the movie.

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanmcb) | 39 comments I haven't read THE HELP yet, but I want to (my mom is reading it now and loving it). And I've heard tons about MAINE this summer, Girls Gone Reading. Good to know you loved it. I recently read Kristina's THINGS WE DIDN'T SAY, and it was just raw and touching and hard to put down. I also couldn't put down IN SEARCH OF THE ROSE NOTES by Emily Arsenault. Really good psychological mystery.

message 10: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (stixaz) I'm going through a dystopia phase and absolutely loved the first two books of Margaret Atwood's trilogy, Oryx & Crake and Year of the Flood. Entertaining reads!

message 11: by Lisarenee (new)

Lisarenee | 3 comments Sonia, I'm going through a dystopia phase too, and am about to read Divergent. I hadn't heard of Atwood's trilogy. I'll need to put it on my list. Thanks.

message 12: by Berry (new)

Berry Payne | 3 comments Liasrenee,I love the dystopia phase I have been in this summer! I read Divergent and really liked it! I hope she finishes the next one sooner than later!

A book I just read that is not related to dystopia at all is One Day by David Nicholls, great read! Movie coming out August 19th I believe with Anne Hathaway! Looking foward to that one and have tickets already to see The Help!

message 13: by Slavica (new)

Slavica (slvmrtnvc) I am currently reading Tony Parsons-My favorite wife, and few others because I always read more then one book at the time.

message 14: by Susan (new)

Susan Phillips (susanelizabethphillips) | 38 comments I basically answered this under Beach Books, but hey... I read HUNGER GAMES trilogy in the winter and still haven't recovered. Totally not my cup of tea, but I couldn't put it down. What an amazing achievement. Loved, loved, loved. As for THE HELP... I read it, loved it like everyone else. My sister is the audio authority, and she said it was one of the best she's ever listened to. She also said the audio of Jennifer Crusie's MAYBE THIS TIME is outstanding.

message 15: by Agnes Kristina (new)

Agnes Kristina Byrd | 3 comments I'd tried a few times to read Diana Gabaldon's Ourlander series, but it never held my attention until this Summer. I'm still on the first book (just started a week ago) and this time, I'm really enjoying her attention to detail and history. Can't put it down!

message 16: by Agnes Kristina (new)

Agnes Kristina Byrd | 3 comments Also, Mrs. Phillips...I started reading all of your books again at the beginning of this Summer. Still LOL every time the heroine in Nobody's Baby but Mine lies about her name being Rose(awkward pause)bud. hehe...

message 17: by DubaiReader (new)

DubaiReader | 4 comments It's hard to choose just one favourite, but I think it'd have to be Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. I hadn't read her before, but this was such a moving balance of current day and historical fiction (Siege of Leningrad).

message 18: by Tamye (last edited Aug 04, 2011 06:20AM) (new)

Tamye | 2 comments I have also read The Help and really liked it, but it took some getting used to the Southern dialect in it. One of my favourite books that I've read this summer is Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson. It's a great psychological thriller that you won't want to put down. I've also just finished Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante which was very good. I'm just starting One Day by David Nicholls.

So many books...so little time. My "To-Read" pile keeps growing. Not a bad thing, I guess.

message 19: by Kristina (new)

Kristina Riggle (kristina_riggle) | 12 comments I have ONCE UPON A RIVER and THIS BURNS MY HEART on my "to be read" stack (on top of my printer, is this a bad place to put your TBR pile?) I just finished THE FOUR MS. BRADWELLS by Meg Waite Clayton and SILVER SPARROW by Tayari Jones, both of which I loved and will make terrific book club discussion fodder. I also read HOUSE OF CARDS, a memoir by David Dickerson about his life in the world of greeting cards, which doesn't even begin to encompass how hilarious and unique that story is.

message 20: by Danna (new)

Danna This summer I have read
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy #1) by Ken Follett World Without End by Ken Follett Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda
Inkheart (Inkheart, #1) by Cornelia Funke The Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory The Lake of Dreams by Kim Edwards
Not very summer-ish, I know.
I liked (more than the others) those:
A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy #1) by Ken Follett

message 21: by TK (new)

TK (taviareads) hey GIRLS GONE READING and SUSAN MCBRIDE -- I just read MAINE for my book club, we're discussing it tomorrow night (with some wine). I'd also like to read ROOM this summer, if I have the time. i already read SECRET DAUGHTER, CALL ME IRRESISTIBLE, and LITTLE BLACK DRESS so now I'm adding THINGS WE DIDN'T SAY to my "to read' shelf!

message 23: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanmcb) | 39 comments You all are making me add tons of titles to my "want to read" list. Has anyone read an advance copy of THE NIGHT CIRCUS? I'm very curious as I seem to be seeing that book cover everywhere. (I think it's out in September.)

I've read that...i got bogged down in the about halfway thorugh but I enjoyed it too!

message 28: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanmcb) | 39 comments I have Sarah's Key and haven't read it yet! But, Julie, now I'll have to read it next (or next after Shilpi's SECRET DAUGHTER, which I can't wait to dig into!).

How is Lisa See's Shanghai Girls?

message 30: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Elsborg One Day - by David Nicholls. It's a fantastic summer read. It encouraged me to buy his others. I didn't like The Understudy as much but I did like Starter for Ten, though not as much as One Day. It's the story of the lives of the two main characters shown on one day over twenty years. Inpsired by a few lines from Great Expectations. Funny and touching.

Thanks, I have just added Winter Garden to my list....it is groaning now !!

message 33: by Nona (new)

Nona | 1 comments I caught up on last year's hot books this summer: "Room" by Emma Donoghue will haunt me forever and "A Visit From the Goon Squad" was brilliant storytelling.

message 34: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (jackie241) | 1 comments I loved reading Secret Daughter. It was one of those books that I could not put down.

message 35: by Carol (new)

Carol Smith (carol_marlene) | 2 comments I think I will re read Summer of '42 by Herman Raucher, since that is the year I was born and today is my birthday. I enjoyed it the first time around and look forward to returning to Nantucket.

message 36: by Virginia (new)

Virginia | 4 comments Summer books have to be "girlie", like anything by Michael Lee West . . . I can't believe there are still people who haven't read "The Help" . . . Imagine if they make "Room" into a movie . . . I have a stack by Kristin Hannah that I haven't read, glad to know you guys like her

message 37: by Diane (new)

Diane (egghead96) | 1 comments "One Day" by David Nicholls... LOVED IT... Can't wait for the movie (I know it will be different, but the book was great).

message 38: by Laurie (new)

Laurie Kellogg | 1 comments My favorite is Call Me Irresistible by SEP. I was aching for a little of the hero's POV during the first half of the book. However, as a writer, I could understand why this story had to be written the way it was. It was wonderful visiting all of my old friends from her previous books.

message 39: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanmcb) | 39 comments Well, happy birthday, Carol! I think we need to bring out a virtual birthday cake so you can blow out the candles and make a wish!

message 40: by Carol (new)

Carol Smith (carol_marlene) | 2 comments Ha ha, thanks soooo much! I just thought that book would be so appropriate to start reading today. A birthday gift to myself!

message 41: by Adriane (new)

Adriane Leigh (adriane_leigh) | 2 comments I loved VIOLETS OF MARCH by Sarah Jio. I just started THE HERETICS DAUGHTER by Kathleen Kent. For summer I usually pick up books that feature the beach as a setting- naturally! Elin Hilderbrand is a popular choice and MAINE is on my list.

message 42: by Susan (new)

Susan (susanmcb) | 39 comments Carol, that sounds like a great gift!

Adriane, I read THE HERETIC'S DAUGHTER and liked it very much. I love books that combine drama and history.

I've heard loads of good things about THE VIOLETS OF MARCH and MAINE, too (lots of mentions of MAINE today, as a matter of fact!).

message 43: by J (new)

J (greenhornet) Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly and Forbidden Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma

GREAT READS!!!!

message 44: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Hammill (bookvan) | 1 comments Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear, just finishing Lessons In Secrets - the latest in the series. Fabulous.

message 45: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Kleeman | 1 comments Hi everyone just joined group. The question what am I reading this summer; my answer is I just started the The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series by J.R. Ward. I find this a very good and sexy read. Makes the summer a little hotter.

message 46: by Kelly Lynn (new)

Kelly Lynn (lemonpink418) | 5 comments I'll have to go with Only Mine by Susan Mallery. I'm in love with her fictional town Fools Gold and couldn't wait to learn more about the infamous Hendrix triplets. Plus the hero\heroines chemistry is off the charts.

I really liked Shanghai Girls, but it ended like you knew there'd be a sequel . . . and wouldn't you know it . . .

message 49: by Kelly (last edited Aug 04, 2011 10:19AM) (new)

Kelly (ksattler) | 2 comments Danna - what did you think of Inkheart? I've seen the movie and I think the book would be better, maybe?

As for my summer reading, I don't remember what I've read. Lately it has been postings and tutorials on CSS3, HTML5, JQuery, mobile web design, ... Not really summer reading material.

message 50: by Julie (new)

Julie Failla Earhart (juliefaillaearhart) | 8 comments has anybody read Rules of Civility by Amor Towles? I'm hearing lots of good things about it.
