Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments 14. Aphrodite's War by Andrea Busfield - Cyprus was great!

The story a village in Cyprus during the troubles from 1950's to 70's and how the villagers coped with it all. A story of love and hate, heroism and cowardice.

And her book Born Under a Million Shadows is even better. That will give you something for Afghanistan. Here's my review if you want to read a bit more about it. There's not many books about Afghanistan that make you laugh - but this one does!

Suzi

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Thanks Suzie for recommendation. Will try and get it from the library.

message 17: by Melki (new)

Melki Let the Right One In was a good one, wasn't it? Too bad I read it last year and can't count it.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments Yes I liked it - it was one of our book club reads.

message 19: by Dave (new)

Dave Wood (pocket7976) | 775 comments I really enjoyed Let the Right One In, but his second novel Handling the Undead whilst full of some good ideas never really hanged together as well for me.

Although I am tempted by his latest Harbour which is a Ghost story.

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 292 comments Looks like you didn't like the Glass Palace Lynne, I'll cross it off the "potentials" list for this challenge.

Not really my sort of book but as it was a book club read you have to make the effort! I do have another of his books but will leave it awhile before attempting to read it!

I saw you were reading that Lynne.....looks very odd

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments It is odd but it was refreshing to read something very different for a change.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments 20. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert - Bali/Indonesia

Chose this country as I loved that part of the story and I had covered Italy.

message 32: by Chris (new)

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 292 comments Oh Lynne, I'm glad you added that, it's reminded me I too read it in January. Unlike you I didn't enjoy so much. It was a tad too self-indulgent for me, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

message 33: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (thesevagabondshoes) | 93 comments I liked [Book:Eat Pray Love], but in the same way that I really liked the Bridget Jones books. It works for me as a easy chick-lit read, and the Italian part of the book was laugh-out-loud in places, but I didn't find it as inspirational as I think the author intended, and as a travel piece it fails, as she has little or no connection with the people in the places she visits.

I read this a little while ago & found it really hard to get into at first but then it suddenly picked up. I found it a really interesting read.

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) | 3122 comments 22. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell - Japan

Terrible book - didn't enjoy that one at all!
