Q&A with Noah Murphy discussion

Let's be honest here, Goodbooks for authors = advertising, but nobody else has the guts to come out and say it, they tip-toe around the issue and make these Q&A sessions that talk about everything but the truth.

So stop lying everyone: You want people to buy your stuff. There's nothing with it, books are a business, books are to make money. I'm no hack, I craft my stuff with love and care. But I'm a realist, and the parrot rescue where I volunteer(where the parrots in my photos live) needs money to buy a farm so they can take in more birds, and the guy who runs it is praying my books take off so I'll write him a big fat check, and I'd happily do it too if they actually sold a lot of copies.

So if no other author is going to say it about their stuff, I will: I'm here so people will BUY MY BOOKS.

If you're tired of cliche high-fantasy, my stuff is for you:
Goblins are suffering scapegoats, not evil.
Dragons are insane(literally).
Male trolls are porn stars. Female trolls are hot.
Dark Elves are dark because of adaptation, not evil.
Dwarves eat fungus and moss.

If you don't have time anymore to read 100k epics with are mostly filler? I keep my works short to avoid filler and make them easier to finish for people on busy schedules. I could easy pump up my stuff to 50k each, but then I'd feel sleazy.

Good show man! When I get the time, as I said before, I will read your books. I admire your, for lack of better expression, your iron clad balls. I commend you for pointing out the tippy toeing and just outright saying "buy my books!" Come on! .99 cents is a steal! I can promise you I will end up buying them in the near future.

0.99 cents is a steal and yes, as an agent for my mother's crime series, the bottom line is definitely that we want the books to sell.
But, in my humble opinion if you will indulge me, there is a lot more to it than that. Especially with hardcopy books, not the e-kind.
I have spent the last 12 months selling mum's hardbacks and have been making less than 50 cents on each one, even with a retail price of over $20 each. The reaosn for this was to get mum's name out there and it seems to have worked.
Now almost every week I am approached by radio stations, writers groups, newspapers and reviewers wanting to know more about mum's amazing career.
I'm not just the biases son here, she has worked in pathology labs, been a getaway driver for illicit activities (more on her site www.pennygrubb.com), got into various sticky situations whilst researching her crime books by posing as a real Private Investigator and currently Chairs the world's largest writing organisation the ALCS.
All writers should join the ALCS by the way. They hunt down secondary right and copyright cash due to the individual authors and pay it out without taking the usual huge cut. They are a not-4-profit company and although it isn't free to join, they take the very modest fee from your first cheque so it doesn't actually cost you anything!

Sorry for the huge post, in essence I agree with the fact that books are product and need selling but I do feel you've got to put in the marketting and promotion groundwork in order that the longer term benefits of being a sucessful writer can be realised.

whoa, Dan! That was clever. Noah began this string with some honest, loud advertising and you sneaked an even bigger ad for your mum in here. Now, that's impressive.

NO NO NO. Its you buying K23 Detective Books, my books. I'm kicking you from the group. You didn't follow the rules which clearly state post all ads in the "Authors sell me your books" thread. Obviously you don't care about buying mine.

the beauty of 99 cent novels. Funny guy like Noah comes along, gives a hilarious pitch, you can say "what the hell" and buy it, just cuz he's a little nutty. Love it.
