Hey everyone,

Jen just pointed out to me that the bookshelf was missing a book, so I've gone ahead and added it.

If anyone else notices one, feel free to reply to this thread!

Diana (higura_natume) | 5 comments How about 'The Perfect Stranger' by Danielle chick

cuz Stephen and Steve read that out loud together so maybe you could add it?

message 3: by Dea (new)

Dea (dea108) | 1 comments i was wondering why there are no updates of the books from the shows. is no one keeping track? like tonight's show had an interesting book on it.

Bruce Bueno De Mesquita
Author, "The Predictioneer's Game"

Angel (gypsylibrarian) | 2 comments I am wondering as well. It does not seem like the list is getting updated, which is a pity because Stewart and Colbert have highlighted a lot of books since the last update here. Any updating coming?

Is anyone maintaing this list?

I don't believe so. Is there a way to ask the Goodreads people to add a new moderator or two if a group has been abandoned? I'd be happy to add the shows' books, as I usually watch with Goodreads and my local library page open to note and request many of the books featured.

I'm the same way, Jessica - I'd gladly help. I'll bet that I could even provide past books from my lists.

I found this somewhere on the website - Let's play around with this.

How do groups work?
For restricted, private, and secret groups, only members can view the discussion boards. For public groups the discussion boards are available to all. For all groups if you are a member you can add books to the group shelves or invite other members. Group administrators can remove members, delete discussion posts, or add other moderators.

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessimuhka) | 7 comments I think that might be the default for groups? If you go to this group's bookshelf page, it says "Only moderators of this group can add books." in the upper left hand corner.

I'm trying to start a group for books from Rachel Maddow's show, and I set it up so all members can add books, in case I'm busy for a while or miss a book or two. I sent a private note to Dinh asking if the settings can be changed, hopefully I'll get a response soon.

I'd also be willing to help maintain the bookshelf, since I've also tried to add books (and then discovered that only moderators can do it for this group).

There are too many interesting books that Jon and Stephen bring to their respective shows to let this group fade into oblivion. I've kept track of some of them - if they sounded interesting to me, so when WE can be moderators or contributors, I'll have a partial list to add.

I currently keep track of the books that sound interesting to me, but if we can get authorization to add books to the bookshelf, it's certainly not hard to keep a piece of paper nearby when I watch every episode, even if a particular book doesn't sound like one I'd want to read.

Didn't thedailyshow.com and/or colbertnation.com used to keep track of every author/book on the show? I swear I used to see it, but when I've looked for it in the past few months, I couldn't find it. Was I just imagining it? The most I can find now is that thedailyshow.com has a "books" tag, but I think we'd have to go through all of the segments to find *which* books were featured.

Tiffany,

I JUST finished sending an e-mail to goodreads to see if we can do something. I'll let you know when I hear.

When we're closer to a solution, I'll see about trying to find all the authors that have been on TDS or CR.

I can help do the history research, too. I'm currently unemployed, and the only thing I really do all day is read and plan my Christmas shopping :)

Ha! Same here. I've gotten an awful lot of reading done this year. Question: do we want to start separate threads for the different books for discussion or combine them all in just a few threads? I just started reading Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman, which was featured on CR fairly recently and wanted to post about it.

Claire (iclairewillis) | 1 comments Please let me know once you decide on a location to post the list of books from the shows.
Thanks,
Claire
p.s. best of luck to Tiffany & Jessica with the job search!

message 17: by Elsa Feiring (new)

Elsa Feiring | 2 comments Thanks for inquiring about this--I've been wondering too. Maybe we could set up a bookshelf for each month/or at least each season? I think it would help to have a general idea of 'when' the author was on the show...but yes, it looks like only moderators can add to the bookshelves. Again, thanks for trying to get this current! Let me know if I can help.

Hmm.... You can't select multiple shelves on the group bookshelf like we can on our personal ones...I was going to suggest we keep the colbert-report and daily-show shelves like they are, but then have month (e.g. Nov 2010, Sept 2010, etc.) shelves, and then using the intersecting shelves, you could find what month/show a particular book was featured on. But that whole idea is blown away if you can't select multiple shelves for the group bookshelf. Hmmm....

message 19: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessimuhka) | 7 comments My idea: we have the general bookshelves like we do, and then make monthly discussion posts, where the first post lists and links all the books on the show that month.

i.e. TDS, November 2010 or CR, November 2010. Then a search of the group would pull up the appropriate discussion post for that particular book. Less cluttery than a post for each book, but still some semblance of timeline organization.

Or... what about if we still had one post per book (otherwise one thread for an entire month might get confusing with all of the books for that month), but then group them in monthly folders? So there'd be a thread for last night's _All the Devils Are Here_ under the TDS November 2010 folder.

And if we went that route, maybe we could also do a general post that says "Here are all of the books in the The Daily Show November 2010 folder:" and list that month's books.

Just thoughts.

message 21: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessimuhka) | 7 comments Yeah, Tiffany, that probably would be less confusing overall.

Two important announcements (and if you think I should start a new thread about this, let me know, please)

1. I received an e-mail in response to my request to Goodreads. I will be named a moderator of this site. My e-mail was not verified and now that I have done that, I can be named a moderator so we will be able to get the book list up-to-date.

2. I found a list of all Jon Stewart's guests on wikipedia. That might make updating the list a whole lot easier than we thought it was going to be.

I'm excited that we will be able to get this group jumping and buzzing.

Jomcvey | 1 comments i wonder if the daily show site would send us a list of the books they reviewed on their show. i can try to contact the show from the website and see what happens. i'd love to see a list not only by season but by month.
