Betty | 3699 comments I recently picked up The Home and the World [Ghare Baire], and Three Novellas Nashtanir, Dui Bon, Malancha /Rabindranath Tagore. The Bengali Tagore, a Nobel Prize Laureate, created verse, novels, plays, essays, songs, and paintings. Satyajit Ray made a film of this novel.

The three main characters of 'The Home'--Bimala, her "Westernized" husband Nikhil, and Nikhel's "charismatic" and "unscrupulous" friend Sandip--present her/his view of the same event, part of the Swadesha protest movement to boycott British imports. William Radice's Preface, Anita Desai's Introduction, and a Chronology analyze the novel, its political background, and Tagore's life.
