15.1. Bye, bye!
Hurricane season is almost over – and so are these names.
Retired Hurricane Names

For this task, you may choose either the 1 or the 2 book option:
A. Two books - Read one book with an author whose name is on the “retired names” list
AND
Read another book published in the year that author’s name was retired
For example, you could read anything by Sarah Addison Allen AND A Confederacy of Dunces or Looking for Rachel Wallace, each published in 1980, the year the name "Allen" was retired.

OR

B. One book - Read one book by an author whose name is on the “retired names” list that was published in the same year that the name was retired.

For example, the name Dean was retired in 2007, so you could read The Good Guy by Dean Koontz, Harlem Summerby Walter Dean Myers, or The Time It Takes to Fall: A Novel by Margaret Lazarus Dean, all of which were published in 2007.

Common variations or other language equivalents of the name may be used - for instance, Charley and Charles or Tomas and Thomas.

Works as equivalents:
Jeanne - Jean, Joan, Jane
Carlos - Charles
Tom - Thomas

Not equivalent:

Frances - Frank
Frances - Francis

Terri (terrisa-uk) | 222 comments Is Carlos acceptable for Charles? And Tom for Thomas? :)

message 6: by Christina (new)

Christina (stinalynne04) I think I'll use The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau. Published in 2004.

message 7: by Bea (new)

Bea S. E. Hinton is really Susan Eloise Hinton per her GR bio. So I could read a book that she published in 1975 Rumble Fish since Eloise was retired as a name in 1975. Correct?

Kate wrote: "Will you accept "Frank" in place of "Frances"?"

Frances with an "e" is most typically the female form (the male form is normally "Francis"). So, Frank would not be a common variation of the name, and won't work here.

You need to use the name that comes up as the author of the book, when the book is linked. It doesn't matter what names the initials may stand for - the name itself must be listed as the author's name.

Emily | 782 comments Okay, another question. Hard to explain, so I'll use an example. If I use the 2 book option for David, which was retired in 1979: For the book I use for the year, can I use The Long Walk, which was published in 1979 IF I read the book out of the compilation The Bachman Books, which was published in 1996 (It actually lists the publication date as 1977, but that's when the first of the 4 stories was published). I know I have to list both sources when I post, so I wasn't sure if this would count, since the copy I'm reading was published in the wrong year.

If the individual book from the compilation you're reading was published in the correct year, that's fine - the date the compilation was published isn't dispositive. As you said, just link to the individual book as well, so it's clear that it was published in the correct year.

Yes, I found references to Jeanne as the French form of Jean, Joan, and Jane.

I'm going to have to say no to this one - Frances is a female name, Francis is the male version. So, this isn't a foreign language equivalent or a common variation - it's more like trying to use "Jane" for "John."

The point of this exception is to cover names like "Charley" which could be very difficult to find as an author's name, but which is really just a variation of "Charles."

Yes, "George" is okay for "Georges."

Me, I'm just hoping that Irene doesn't turn out to be one that has to be retired.... We've had a little too much Mother Nature in Virginia this week!

And I agree with you about Mother Nature. I'm in DE and I'm hoping we only get rain. Have the ripple effect from your earthquake on Tues was definitely enough for me for a good long while.

Cindy AL (cangelmd) | 645 comments Sandy, I'm sending everyone on the East Coast good wishes and prayers from the Gulf Coast where we know a thing or two about hurricanes...here's hoping everyone has gassed up their car and has water, charcoal and candles!

Funny thing is I lived in Richmond for a few years, and I just can't wrap my head around that earthquake thing...in Mineral?? or Louisa or wherever exactly it was.

Well, Mineral, Louisa, same deal, really - I live in Richmond, so awfully close, and it was pretty wild. I've been through plenty of hurricanes, but that was my first earthquake!

Laurie | 910 comments Another question reference Margaret George - does the publication date have to be the original date or the edition? The Memoirs of Cleopatra was originally published in 1997 but the edition I have came out in 1998?, and the edition of Henry VIII also came out in 1998 but was originally published in 1986?

Middle name is fine, as long as it's part of the author name that shows up on goodreads.
