Neil Mudde | 7 comments I have discored audio books, to which I can listen while I do other things, multitasking, in any case some of my book club members feel it is not the same as reading a book, now I understand one does not physically see the words, grammar, sentence structure, and all else that goes with reading a book, but...............would like to hear your opinion thanks

Gerda (Libtech) | 11 comments I like listening to audio books too, but only if I don't do anything else. I find it especially good while travelling, in a train or plane. Or when I'm lying in bed and just want to listen to a good story.
Unfortunately, if you don't like the voice or accent of the person reading, it's a big turn-off.

Neil Mudde | 7 comments Here is an interesting Dutch Audio Boek site:

Gerda (Libtech) | 11 comments Thanks for that, I'm going to try that.

Rene (renehasekamp) The pleasure of listening to audio books is for 99% dependent on the reader. For Dutch books try to find books read by Jan Meng (Harry Potter, Tolkien). Then you have an experience that is even better than reading the book itself.

Neil Mudde | 7 comments Hello Rene:
You are so right, I have stopped listening to a few, as I could not tolerate the voice of the reader. For some reason or other I am not too keen on Harry Potter, although I recently saw several of the movies, which I showed in a long term care home to residents, they loved the exitement and visuals, and I actually did as well, off course there are some wonderful actors in the pictures. Each of us is so unique with likes and dislikes, which makes life, and people so much more interesting. And who would have thought 50 years ago one would be able to listen to a book on some sort of gizmoo!! pretty awesome and fantastic!

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) | 3056 comments Recommendations for audio books were asked for in one of my other groups and someone remarked that Pride and Prejudice narrated by Kate Reading is excellent, as (quote) "the voice inflections helped with the subtle humor" (end quote).

Annet (annedo) I listen a lot to audiobooks when travelling by car, which I do quite regularly (Cologne - Venlo - Leiden and back). You might think this is dangerous, but just moving forward on a motorway for a few hours - especially in the Netherlands, with a low speedlimit - is a different story. And should I happen to find myself in the middle of one of the famous Dutch "files" - well, audiobook out and time flies.
The last one I heard was De Overgave (Japin), read by Japin. De thuiskomst (Enquist, read by Enquist) was also excellent.

If you do not need the CDs (or are prepared to burn your own), I recommend luisterrijk.nl for Dutch audiobooks and soforthoeren.de for German ones.

Rene (renehasekamp) I am now listening to A Princess of Mars as an audiobook from Librivox, and it it quite good. A wonderful organization!

Dymphie Me too: love listening to audiobooks while driving my car along known and boring routes to and fro my work.
Special classics as Robinson Crusoe, Alleen op de wereld, Tijl Uilenspiegel, Sara Burgerhart :-)..
Librivox indeed is a rich source.
But also more modern works from the library and Netlibrary fi policiers as Wallander.

I like to listen to audiobooks while quilting... I like to do patchwork but not the quilting at the end... But with an audiobook it,s not so bad :-)

Wulan (gewoonwulan) | 3 comments When I got my drivers license, and a company car to celebrate that mile stone, I missed the reading I use to do while travelling by train. So I tried a few audiobooks, but found it difficult to concentrate on the text while driving. I was replaying whole chapters again and again, but it just didn't come through.

But now I'm 5 years more experienced driver, so I recently gave audiobooks another go. I must say it's a wonderful invention and I just love it!
I actually just started my project of catching up on the classics. Librivox.org is a really good source for those. I even consider to read a few books for Librivox myself :-)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) | 3056 comments A friend of mine informed me recently that she had been listening to a French audiobook edition of Le rouge et le noir by Stendhal. She downloaded it at no cost from www.literatureaudio.com and said the narrator was 'competent, although not inspirational'.

So, should you like to brush up on your French and listen to Stendhal's Le rouge et le noir in its original language, feel free to download this audiobook.

Eva (evafc) | 12 comments My kids love audiobooks. I have several for them. For in the car, but also for at home. I never listen to audiobooks myself. i prefer reading .

message 15: by Marvis (new)

Marvis | 11 comments Sidenote: Librivox also has some Dutch works, including a full read of Max Havelaar. :-)

message 16: by Corry (new)

Corry Clybouw | 13 comments I like short stories as audiobooks - like 1/2 hour. I listen to them in the car (I get carsick when I read in the car) or when I have trouble falling asleep and I cannot put the bedside light on :-) So really, an alternative for when "normal" reading is not possible...
