I loved this- doesn't really fit into a typical genre that I would think of on an American bookshelf. Descriptive but not overbearing.

Clarke and Clarke have created a journal that provides an ethnographic record of the East Indians and Creoles of San Fernando--and the entire sugar belt south of the town known as Naparima. They record socio-political relations during the second year of Trinidad’s independence (1964), and provide first-hand evidence for the workings of a complex, plural society in which race, religion, and politics had become, and have remained, deeply intertwined. Entries occur whenever there is evidence of social scientific importance to the project, and these range from descriptions of weddings and pujas (prayer ceremonies devoted to a Hindu deity) to interviews with religious leaders, politicians and members of the south Trinidad elite.

Retirement is Fun by Brenda Mohammed
Read this book and see the wonders of retirement experienced first-hand by the author who is from Trinidad. She was at first devastated by her sudden retirement in her still youthful days. She learnt through her many experiences that retirement is a time to enjoy life.
The author has surely proved that when she retired from her first job she definitely did not retire from life.

Heart Warming Tales by Brenda Mohammed
The stories related in this book are all set in a local Trinidad environment. They are very enjoyable.

REVIEW:
A true story told with pure intentions and deep feelings. It's simplicity and well scripted chapters grow into each other methodically and freely. The reader is impelled to move on with ease and comfort. There is a pervasive humility in each incident which truly reflects the author's character and personality. Her pride in her heritage and family ties touches deep into the soul and absorbs the attention of the reader. Personal circumstances told, reflect her openness to inform and tutor at the same time, what one can derive from challenges unexpected, if rooted in the trust one places in God.
The author's implicit belief in divine intervention summarizes her message. I have enjoyed, I have been touched and have had my personal convictions reiterated in this most interesting and soul searching book. I recommend it to all especially to you who in times when the clouds grow dark- the silver linings emerge to remind us of a light emerging on the other side. This is the author's story

This is a most touching and emotional true story. of the author's battle with cancer. It is a detailed and personal account of how a very strong believer and family-oriented woman who lives in Trinidad beat ovarian cancer. Although that type of cancer historically develops rapidly and has devastating effects, this true story shows how faith, family and love are a powerful force to reckon with

PART OF A BOOK REVIEW:
The author attributes her success to her faith and belief in God. She would pray for wisdom and guidance every time she faced a challenging situation. Whenever she had a problem, she prayed about it and the problem was miraculously solved. She continually speaks of the influence of God in her life and in the life of her family. The strength of her faith helped her to overcome any diversities that entered her life.
This book is important in its portrayal of life in the author's native country, Trinidad, in the latter part of the twentieth century.
It records some historical events through which the author lived. One such event is the takeover of the government by Muslimeens in 1990 and the scare throughout the country. Other significant events are the changes in the banking system and the bank's attitude to its employees throughout the years. In addition, the book shows how a young, determined girl just out of high school was able to have a highly successful career in the area of her choice and live a fulfilling life

The grandparents in these stories are from Trinidad. Children love these stories.

Would you like to know what it was like to live in Trinidad and Tobago one hundred years ago? Those were primitive times but young Andrew survived them.
This book is about the life of a great Educator, who was born to indentured immigrants in Trinidad and Tobago in the year 1905. His dream was to be a lawyer, but circumstances led him to a profession in Education in which he attained the highest achievements. His career was studded with successes. At 33 years of age he was appointed as a Headmaster and the school he headed became the top school in the island during his tenure. His ability was recognized by his Government, who awarded him a scholarship to study Post Primary Methods in the London University Institute of Education in the United Kingdom. His 580 page thesis assisted the Government in the development of Modern Secondary Schools in Trinidad and Tobago. This is a story of a man who was respected by his peers as an exemplar par excellence in the many places where he served, succeeded, and soared. Dr. Khan was a God - fearing man and was ordained as a Presiding Elder in the Presbyterian Church In 1973. He preached many sermons and extracts from three such sermons have been appended in this book. Readers will be amazed to learn what his family discovered in his desk drawer immediately after his death. This is a story worth reading. (less)
