Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #5) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth by Jeff Kinney

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Oh what fun it is to read the diary of a pre teenage high school boy! Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth is the fifth book in the 'Wimpy Kid' series. Our main character Greg Heffley is growing up fast and is having to deal with all of the problems associated with this. Family relationships, boy - girl parties and falling out with best friends. Jeff Kinney cleverly presents his book in bitesize diary entries interspersed with hilarious cartoon sketches to support the story. This is a light hearted fun book that most children would enjoy and I would recommend this book to children year 4 and above. I would specifically recommend it for boys that find reading books challenging and intimidating. The Wimpy Kids series may not be works of literary excellence, but they are engaging. They are way cool. I know this because a nine year old boy told me!

Three great reviews, Tahmin, thanks. I love Mrs. Wobble the Waitress as well. Handa's Surprise is great for creating story maps, and for introducing children in EYFS and KS1 to different fruits. You can create great displays of observational drawings too, and when I was Inclusion Manager, I worked with EAL children on a display with the names of fruits in different languages.

Great reviews, Imrania and Lucy. A good early chapter book is always worth noting, to help children sustain reading and want to keep going onto the next chapter. Books where one chapter is a contained story in itself can be worth grabbing! There are loads of versions of the Town MOuse and the Country Mouse; a very famouse one is The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse, which children love to pour over as it is the right size for their hands, and has such detailed illustrations.

Thanks Lucy. It would certainly be brilliant for linking with counting in 2s as an introduction to 2x tables. Great for role-play as well.

It's a great book of poems. I had a class that had some children who did tell tales on each other a lot, and when children did start coming up and telling me that someone had looked at their pencil in a nasty way, we would chant together "Please Mrs Butler", and it made them laugh!
