I liked this book, but I felt it was missing something. The first part was slower and I wish that things were more clearly explained in regards to what happened in the east.

I found myself not really liking either Jenna or Mason at the start. Mason because he was so cold, it seemed like he was a machine, while Jenna seemed like a spoiled brat.

The story did get more interesting when the random people showed up. It sure changed the dynamic of things. They changed again when the decision was made to seek out another. Once they were at that point things got a little boring again. It was only when they were faced with the danger almost breaching their safe place that things ramped up again and big changes happened again.

I am not sure what I think of the explanation of magic and how it works in this world. There is no refuting that it is there, but wasn't it wasn't explained very well.

Even with all my issues with the book I plan on reading the next book, I want to find out what happens to all of these people and how the magic has changed things.
