a)You have taken a spot that someone else might have wanted
b) The organizers often have a specific timetable they are working on.

We understand that sometimes you have to back out due to an emergency. Let the organizer know. That's preferable to just disappearing without a trace.

You left out the part about the inevitable tailspin that occurs when everyone tries to figure out monetary exchange and postal rates.
