Nini | 16 comments I can't quite understand why people like her. I used to in the first part of book one, but I couldn't. I started hating her since Simon (my favorite character) kept getting bashed because he's a 'mundane' while they are the 'shadow hunters'. They discriminated against him since he was human, then they discriminated since he was a downworlder, it seemed like he never got a break. People called her a great person and the friend ship was great but if her friendship was as great why wouldn't she know what his mother would do to him about the vampire problem? How come she never defended him really about the whole "Mundane" name calling? How come she still hasn't realized how much she hurt Simon for a guy she met like..6 months ago and nearly had sex with him? She does these things and gets defended because of her obliviousness. She's old enough to see what she's doing is wrong. How come she gets all the praise for doing mostly nothing?! (She does hunt demons and sort but still not many) Why do you all defend this girl who shouldn't really even be considered the main character? You can easily make Simon the main character since he has changed more through out the series than Clary has.

Well that makes me not fully like her since she's to stubborn to actually realize if she's wrong.

I seriously hate her, she does these things she knows Simon doesn't like and does them. She knows Simon loves her. She toyed with Simon! Her best friend. She knows he loves her and she knows she does not love him. If you do not love someone you don't lead a person on. Everyone gets mad cause Simon takes Clary away in the 2nd book, they say "Oh you broke Jace's heart" but Jace pratically mkes Simon seem like a lowlife. (Blood sucker, Mundane ect.) Yet everyone chooses him. People find Simon annoying because they simply love Jace. I hate people who bash simply cause they like the other character. This happens all the time. In New Moon Jacob was a sweet guy. Edward was controling. The Anti's saw this and ranted. Stephenie didn't want her Edward-kuns to be bad even id he was and turned Jacob into things he never was from the start. Despite Simon being the Author's favorite, he gets bashed in a weird way.He gets bashed through abuse and fandom.
Abuse-The other characters constantly putting him down despite him beuing able TO handle himself! He can and probably has. Everyone yells at him for every little mistake. He was hungry and accidently attack his friend's sister. He was trying so hard not to. The characters made him feel like complete shit. Everyone bashes him through names and even shown hatred towards him since he was human/vampire.
Fandom-Because everyone likes Jace, everyone bashes Simon. Cause everyone loves Clace it has to be CLACE. Of course there are those Yaoi fans who do Sice (SimonXJace)It's because Simon comes between two people that barely known eachother's relationship. (I can see Clary having sex with Simon in the beginning. I don't see Clary having sex/near sex with Jace since he barely knows her!)

I dont like her. I totally agree with Nini (except the last bit). She does these things on purpose..he confronts her...she STILL does these things. She played games with him. Simon is my favorite, hes honest and he always tries his best.

She is an example of a person (Mary sue) who doesn't learn at all what she does is harming others. She never grows to know Simon hates a certain thing she's doing. She isn't progressing. To be honest, if Clary was just one of those bitchy secondary characters everyone just puts aside as bad, I wouldn't care. That happens alot. (The best friend who feels she's above everyone and hates snotty people when she's snotty herself.)If Simon was the main character I wouldn't mind because unlike Clary, he does change, he does mature. If this all happened with him as a main character people will get more interested since he has a plot line that's more interesting than Clace's where it does the random "You are my brother" ending when you know they aren't. If Simon WAS the main character, you'd know that atleast then your getting a character that is actually being dragged around, that actually has a problem. Simon would have been a better first character and Claray the secondary. Simon could love Jace/Clary but Jace/Clary won't know it till he announces. (Like Simon falls for Clary but Clary denied his love, loving Jace but Jace falls for Simon...blah blah ect) It would have more conflict and would be more interesting than seeing Clary do the samestuff over again. Fuck, City of Glass is just like Breaking Dawn. Jace and Clary have extra powers that make everything much more "exciting" when it's just pure randomness and Marysueness. Simon gets built with all these Vampire things but atleast those get leveled out. (Mark of Cain-It saves him but it tends to also get him into trouble. Vampire-It causes him to be prime victim of insults, attacks, he can't act normal, he HAS to eat or he'll do something he can't control, ect) Clace=Bedward fully. It's strange how she can create awesome secondary characters but fail at making the main characters, much like *gasp* Twilight (The Leah bashing, the Jacob destruction, the Charlie basher, the Jessica hater, the Lauren shaver, ect) This is like Twilight but to a higher degree. Atleast Bella and Edward wait till they were married. Twilight created all these books that are terrible because of how successful it has been. Though it ain't as shitty as The Goddess Test. (Virgin Hades, really? lol)

Nini | 16 comments Claudia wrote: "Clary is alright...but that wasn't my favorite character" I liked her until half the first book then released she was a jerk to Simon. (Simon just reminds me of my brother, except Simon is nicer)

I think Clare did a great job with not making the book TOTALLY about Clary. For me its the fact that, as you said, Clary doesnt mature. The way she writes the character she seems to mature but to me it just seems fake. I LOVE the first two MI books but the COA just frustrated and pissed me off

message 12: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 56 comments To be honest...my favorite character is Simon...He always had me laughing out loud...When he was turned into that Rat...I laughed MAF

message 13: by Whitney (new)

Whitney I didn't like Simon, he's a bit of a weenie. He has no courage, or bravery or sense of adventure. My favourite character is Jace. There is more to him beneath is arrogant, conceited facade. Clary is stubborn and hot-headed, but it gives her flavour. If she was too nice it would be boring. I like how she and Jace fight, it's kind of cute how protective they are of her and Simon.

message 14: by Whitney (new)

Whitney One more thing about Clary, she wasn't deliberately mean to Simon. She doesn't like him (as a boyfriend). What else was she to do? Simon saw her and Jace kissing, and got angry. Clary could only tell the truth. What else could she have said? Simon had to learn to get over her.

Yeah he had to learn while watching his girlfriend kiss another dude. VERY well played Clary. I wonder:How can you just fall for a guy who you met for not a long time, yet you can't love the boy who knows you through and through? What? Does EVERY girl just have to end up with a stuck up ass? Just because they are hot never means they are sweet. To me, the whole "This guy is your father, wait hes not your father THIS guy is." thing is annoying. It just tries to pull you away from the fact he's an ass. Just like how Clary is 'forced' into being a shadowhunter, which clearly she wasn't. Weenie? Yeah getting into reckless danger would JUST be a delight! You'd just be so happy and adventurous when you have nothing to defend yourself against it. VERY VERY weenie. He's not a wenie. I would be weenie too if it had that. Clary is the weenie.

Well the interesting thing was the beginning...but the end nearly annoyed me. The whole switching who's father is who's ticked me off later..

message 17: by Shaneka (new)

Shaneka | 59 comments yeah im rereading the whole series now for like the fourth time and i think i might skip the whole dad swapping part

think about it just because shes close with him dosnt mean she should be in love with him...too me i thionk clary thinks of him as more of a brother character, thats how i would feel with someone i grew up with

She used to like him. Way in the beginning. (In fact she gets jealous when a girl flirts with Simon) But these feelings leave when JACE enters. That's so common it's annoying

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

To Nini: Not really....Ok well she did but not enough to want to be with him like she did jace
and she knew she didnt want to be with him before she met jace

message 23: by Desiree (last edited Nov 14, 2011 09:52AM) (new)

Desiree (desiree2649) | 49 comments I just think that she cared for simon like family and when jace came along simon got jelous and clary couldnt help that she like him and she was also just worried she would lose simon as a friend

plus..... simons doing good with izzy now.. they really like eachother..sooo it worked out.

message 24: by Laerke (new)

Laerke (laerken_s) | 2 comments I read City of Bones first time a year and a half ago, and that was before I began to notice the personality of the characters and all that. But I jsut finished rereading it, and every time Clary says something I wanna throw the book at the wall .. I don't know why she annoys me so much, I just find her a really annoying main character. But as far as I remember, it gets better in the next books.

message 25: by Desiree (new)

Desiree (desiree2649) | 49 comments i dont know why everyones soo hyped up over the characters???? there just characters :)

message 26: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah1) I like clary she does things on her own terms just like isabelle. I like Simon but he wanted something he couldn't have and didn't act on it till someone else was interested. I love clary and jace together and I think Simon and isabelle are great together as well. I just love these books

message 27: by Desiree (new)

Desiree (desiree2649) | 49 comments GOOD! someone who agrees with me! :)

message 28: by Tjala (new)

Tjala | 42 comments i like her too. thoiugh you all have some good points she is definately an independant and strong character!

message 29: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah1) The other thing I like about her is that she has something special as well. She's not like Bella or any of the other books where the guy is fantastic and awesome and picks a normal ordinary human. Clary is special and can do things as well she is just as special as the other characters in books

message 30: by Desiree (new)

Desiree (desiree2649) | 49 comments YA she is right.....but then again shes not just a normal human )

message 31: by Tjala (new)

Tjala | 42 comments yeah i like the way she has flaws like things wrong with her. in twilight bith edward and bell are perfect and in fallen so are daniel and luce. in fact thats what happens in most books which is why this ones more relistic and good!!

message 32: by Desiree (new)

Desiree (desiree2649) | 49 comments I know thats what makes a good book, because no relationship is perfect :)

message 33: by Tjala (new)

Tjala | 42 comments you are so right i hate books with perfect people in!

message 37: by Obsessionist (new)

Obsessionist | 27 comments Simon's my favourite character and Clary is so clueless but everybody just loves her! whats wrong with people! I mean she should be a good friend and not just care about herself the whole time

message 38: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah1) Well to be honest she does find out her mum has been kidnapped find out that the boy she likes is her brother that her father is the enemy and turns out she's a shadow hunter. That's a lot to take in and pretty hard not think about anything other than all that

message 39: by Obsessionist (new)

Obsessionist | 27 comments But she did think about Jace

message 40: by Ela (new)

Ela Yeah but she's can't be perfect, that would create a completely unrealateble main character

message 41: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannah1) The main character has to have flaws in order for people to relate otherwise everyone would hate her and the book would be terrible

message 42: by Obsessionist (new)

Obsessionist | 27 comments good point, if Clary wasnt the way she was the book wouldnt be as epic.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

i kinda hate her, shes rude has not respect for older people eg lukes sister, she does things without thinking, i could go on.. sometimes shes likeable but most of the time i wanna slap her in the face

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

* if only that was physically possible

message 45: by Obsessionist (new)

Obsessionist | 27 comments I know what you mean. Sometimes I randomly yell at her through the book and my brother walks in the room and shakes his head and walks away. He may think I have mental problems :P

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

lmao! ive actually had her appear in my dreams! well nightmares if you think about it...

message 47: by Obsessionist (last edited Mar 17, 2012 03:21AM) (new)

Obsessionist | 27 comments yeah she appears in my dreams too, so i put up dream catchers in my room, so far its working

message 48: by harshini (new)

harshini (watchmeread) I didn't enjoy Clary but I have read worse characters. Besides the book was third persone style with shifting between thoughts of Simon, Jace & Clary so it wasn't like we were reading her point of view all the time

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

well most of the time it was her point of view and its not just that its her actions to! i mean why the hell did she slap jace for! he saved your life!

message 50: by Obsessionist (new)

Obsessionist | 27 comments exactly. I mean if i was being attacked by a demon and somebody saved me i would be grateful. her message is basically " I wanted to be eaten"
