October's Build Your Own Challenge

Duration - October 1st - October 31st.

Ahhh, yes. A new month, a new challenge - and I almost forgot about it! Thank you, Lethal, for the reminder!!!

So here we go: If you’ve done this before, and many of you have, you know the drill. If not, here’s how it works –

The challenges in this group are designed to be not very challenging, hence the title, Not Too Challenging Challenges. That means that you get to design the challenge around the books you want to read and the only requirement is that the books somehow remind you of October.

Some ideas might be –
**Books that are published in October.
**Stories that have something to do with Fall, Halloween, Columbus Day, etc.

Some October Holidays and Observances -

* Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
* American Pharmacist Month
* Apple Jack Month
* Awareness Month
* Breast Cancer Awareness Month
* Clergy Appreciation Month
* Computer Learning Month
* Cookie Month
* Domestic Violence Awareness Month
* Eat Country Ham Month
* International Drum Month
* Lupus Awareness Month
* National Diabetes Month
* National Pizza Month
* National Vegetarian Month
* National Popcorn Popping Month
* Sarcastic Month
* Seafood Month

Also -

Some Weekly Celebrations:

* Week 1 Get Organized Week
* Week 1 Customer Service Week
* Week 2 Fire Prevention Week
* Week 2 Pet Peeve Week
* Week 3 Pastoral Care Week

So you see, with a little imagination it’s very easy to find books that will work in these challenges! If you have no imagination at all, copy someone else's challenge!!

The only restriction is that you can’t begin reading for this challenge until October 1st, and you must be finished on or before October 31st.

Please list your stats at the top of the page so I can easily spot them and update them.

Sign up below if you’d like to join us!

message 13: by Gaynell (last edited Sep 26, 2011 07:43PM) (new)

Gaynell (gaynellk) | 268 comments Count me in. But, since I'm also doing the Lisa Ladies' Favorite Books Halloween Party challenge, the All Things Autumn challenge, and an urban fantasy challenge, it may be a small list. It'll probably be paranormal or urban fantasy - containing either vampires, witches, werewolves, witches, fae, etc. Of course, it could contain historical because people do dress up in regency costumes, too. Or, it could be published in October! I won't have trouble finding the books - just getting all of them read. :)

Edited to list number of books.

I'll try for 5 in October

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Lady Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "I have a ball, but sometimes I get too scared, especially with the scary movies they show all month. Just ask my sister. :)"

Haha!!! I bet! I remember I tried to do it last year and I even checked out Salem's Lot from the library... or maybe I bought it? Anyway, I got too scared just thinking about reading it!

message 21: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (new)

 Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments Salem's Lot is very scary. I think I'm a bit masochistic in that I really enjoy scary books, and movies, but they can be too much for me. I can't do the serial killer thing at all, though!

message 22: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments Serial killer stories scare the bejeezus out of me because they're not pretend vampires, or ghosts... they're real.

Remember Richard Ramirez, "The Night Stalker?" It was about 30 years ago or so that he was on the loose. I was terrified because my daughter was still little and I barely slept worrying that he'd break into my apartment and hurt her.

message 23: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments In case you don't remember him - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_...

message 24: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (last edited Sep 27, 2011 11:44AM) (new)

 Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments I do remember hearing about him and John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy, etc. Same here. Serial Killers are real life to me. I mean I believe that demons are real, but I believe that God protects us from demons. It's harder to know if the nice looking person isn't actually a psycho murderer. I can't watch any stuff with serial killers w/o getting freaked out. I watch Criminal Minds because I think Spencer is so cute, but sometimes I have to turn it because it disturbs me too much.

message 25: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I often wonder if serial killers are just insane, or if they're possessed. I'm reading Envy (The Fallen Angels, #3) by J.R. Ward and if you remember Veck from Lover Unleashed you know his dad was a serial killer, and Veck struggles with that in Envy. And, the main storyline in Envy revolves around a serial killer, the one who was attack at the end of Lover Unleashed.

message 26: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Certifiable St. Vinnie's Ninny (last edited Sep 27, 2011 11:49AM) (new)

 Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 3737 comments I still haven't read Crave, so I might not get to Envy for a while, but I am excited to read it. I'm very intrigued to read about Veck. He was very intense in Lover Unleashed. That must be awful to be the child of a serial killer. The new female agent on Criminal Minds is the daughter of a serial killer.

I think some murderers/psychopaths are possessed, but some are just evil. Probably a few are mentally ill and really don't have control over their actions.

message 27: by UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish, Your Humble Servant (new)

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish | 8001 comments I'm surprised at the level of emotion in Envy. It's so, so good.

@Christine S - Oh dear, I have all five books of Brenda Joyce's Master Of Times series. Haven't actually read any of them. *poor me* :)

Anyway, I'm thinking of going paranormal for this month and Vampires and Werwolves will be high on my list. Hey can I get some books from Lisa's Ladies' Favorite Book List??

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 4782 comments Okay, ladies. Please help me with my "pet peeve" book this month.

I need a recommendation whose theme is "second chance at love." I mean the type of 2nd chance between two people who once had it and lost it - only to find it again. I'm not big on this theme; I figure, once it's over, man-oh-man, it's OVER.

Also, any recs will need to be available at my library, as I'm not buying it, LOL! (pun intended)

Thanks!!

First thing that popped in my head was Private Arrangements by Sherry Thomas . I'm not a big fan of "2nd chance" romances-although, I don't go out of my way to avoid them either-but I thought PA was VERY good.

message 49: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 4782 comments Another question, Dhes: Does When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Happily Ever Afters, #2) by Eloisa James meet my criteria, or is it just a 2nd chance at love for the heroine - with someone else?

A first question, Lethal: After about 100 pages, I couldn't get into

Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas (loved that someone said it should be called Not Quite a Wife. Is this more of the same angst?
