★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments There will be two challenges this month...both are fairly simple.

1. Read a book that is written by a Goodreads Author. (On you My Books page they will be indicated by a "*" and on the author profile it will specifically state "Goodreads Autor Profile".
2. Read a book where the main character is something that you could dress up as for Halloween i.e. cat, dog, vampire, witch, football player, cheerleader, alien, etc.

Each book will count as one point per challenge. So if you read a book like Stray by Rachel Vincent you will get two points. One for Rachel Vincent being a GR author and one for the main character being a werecat.

message 2: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments I think I am going to try for at least 5 points.

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 537 comments When you mean Goodreads author, you mean authors who have an account on here?

message 4: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments GR authors are ones who are active on GR...when you look at your bookshelves, if there is an asterisk next to their name they are a GR author; or if you are looking at a book list, it will say it in brackets

message 5: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) I'm not sure how many points I want to shoot for... I'll say 7. :) Will post my list as I finish.

Melissa T (melissasmidnightmusings) I'm going to shoot for 3 points on Halloween costumes portion, and 5 points on the Goodreads author part of the challenge. I will post as I go. So far:

Goodreads Authors:
1. French Lessons by Ellen Sussman
2. Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

message 10: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments i'm going to just aim for the GR authors - but don't quite understand the purpose behind the points...just IMHO it shouldn't matter if we chose to read 100 pg books, or 700 pg books...but hey...lol!

GR Author
A Tale from de Rode - Abigail Roux - 10/2/2011

message 11: by ★Meghan★ (new)

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments The points don't really matter here. Mostly what it is for is so that people can give themselves a point range to shoot for. Hopefully that helps.

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments I just don't want to see this turned into a competition and I fear that is what assigning points might do

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Dee... I just pick books and read as I want. You don't have to worry about the points. I do not aim for points. All on personal preference. Some people like to have a goal to shoot for.

Sometimes I don't even get in a book for the challenge. But personally, the challenges are for my to make my reading a bit more diverse. Wait, it is diverse but then I pick books that have been on the side line or such.

Happy Reading :)

message 14: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Lyss, don't think Darren Shan is a GRs author...no * by it on My Books.

message 15: by Shay (last edited Oct 16, 2011 12:10PM) (new)

Shay | 862 comments I don't know how much to make as my goal. I'm going to read a lot of books written by people who died before GR, this month. So, I'm going to assume they're not GR authors. And a lot of authors who I'm pretty sure aren't on GR. I'll say 8 points?

1. Die Buying by Laura DiSilverio
2. Kitty Goes to War by Carrie Vaughn
3. Elvis and the Tropical Double Trouble by Peggy Webb (No star by her name, but on her author page it says GR author in parenthesis)
4.The DUFF by Kody Keplinger
5. My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison
6. Skating Over the Line by Joelle Charbonneau
7.Lady of the English by Elizabeth Chadwick
8. Lionheart by Sharon Kay Penman

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments Shay - let me know how Die Buying is - I have it on the pile to read...i'm flipping back and forth about using it for a challenge book in another group - read 2 books that have a homophone in the title (I think it is - the one where its said the same, but spelt different) - I have a Sea/See; Hear/Here and a Die/Dye all on the pile...I just can't decide

It was a 2 star book for me. The author randomly made the main character the daughter of a rich Hollywood producer. Had no part in the plot- seemed to serve to make the main character more noble and sympathetic. But it came off as being fake and cliched. Doesn't it seem like a lot of mystery heroines are independently wealthy? Oddly, I still feel like I'll give the series another chance and read the next book in the series. I just wouldn't pay for the book- I'll get it at the library instead. In the mystery genre, I'm sure there are a ton of books with "die" in the title that are better.

message 19: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments probably, but I have that one on the pile...lol! I did pick up A Pour Way to Dye as well the other day for lke 99 cents

Good catch... I put the wrong book up! LOL!

message 21: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) LOL :). No problem! I saw that you had it on there, and I was trying to think of what book I could use. Finished it on the 3rd. It's okay, checked the next one out today at the library.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Still reading it to my boys but they are liking it. Although, they fall asleep before we can make some real progress. The Mephisto Covenant is really good but I didn't think it was so long. But I should be done with it tonight :) If I don't get sucked into my blog. I need to get some reviews done. :(

message 23: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments I feel you on the blog - i'm soo far behind - I have 2 review books I have to finish and several reviews to write

So many reviews and I want to review right when I finish a book but starting a new book is too much fun. I can't stop reading when I find good ones. I've been on a great book streak. It is hard to stop reading just to hit the blog and come up with reviews even if the books deserve great reviews.

Hard to complain though...

message 25: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments lol...haha! i have so many books in progress, book ADD struck me hard this past week

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to have many in progress but I've been slimming it down. Really I have one going maybe two if I set one down and pick the other up. Plus I have a book that I read to my boys.

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 537 comments I finally got a blog last week, but I am having a hard time making it look the way I want it to.

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments Amy - r u using wordpress? I found they have a ton of how-to videos that really helped me with a lot of my tweaking and personalizing

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 537 comments No, it is blogspot

message 30: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments they might have similar - I started on blogspot but ended up migrating to wordpress after a few weeks (didn't have that many posts by that stage)

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 537 comments Dee wrote: "they might have similar - I started on blogspot but ended up migrating to wordpress after a few weeks (didn't have that many posts by that stage)"

Is it easier to use wordpress?

Same here! I haven't posted a review since last sunday for UnR B. and bfly feet is suffering.. :(

message 33: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 315 comments I don't know if easier is the better term, but blogspot (at least for me) wasn't as intuitive as wordpress. Plus, I like with wordpress, I can link my GR account for reviews and that makes it easier

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 537 comments I will have to look into using wordpress then.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I had a harder time with wordpress but I think there are more options. Blogger has worked out for me. When I need to make a change I ask a friend or google HTML. I know I've self learned a lot of the code.

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Haha true:) I always line myself up to Lyss, though. Not sure why, I just do.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

I just happen to be picking up the sort of books that make u want to know what's next. I've been reading more & sleeping less bc I can't stop thinking about them.

Today I only got in 10 pages bc I was helping my dad put a new roof on his house. I was so tired at 7:30 when I got home I went straight to bed.

message 42: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Well that explains everything! I'm glad you're picking up those books, then :D

Cools! How's the roof lookin?

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 537 comments I tried reading Ready Player One, but after 26 pages in, I couldn't finish it. It was boring, confusing, and I just did not care for the book. I'm not counting it for this challenge even though I have it listed under goodreads authors, but I wrote unfinished next to it.

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

that is ok. some books are not worth trying to make it all the way through. There are so many books out there waiting for you to pick them up. Certain books are just not for everyone.

The roof is half way done. I'll have to help again tomorrow. I worked on it from 9 to 2:30 today. I'm soooo sore!!!

Do you rate books you don't finish? I do if they were really bad- I'll give them 1 stars. If I have even the slightest suspicion, though, that I may not have been in the mood for it, I won't rate it. I have a GR shelf for books I couldn't finish.

Thanks! I started the 1st chapter of The Power of Six (Lorien Legacies, #2) by Pittacus Lore last night. I know I will like this book cause I already read the first book and really loved it that I even watched the movie too.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I should start a shelf like that. I couldn't finish hunger games. I don't think it was the right book for at that moment.

If it was horrid I will def give it a 1 & say so in the comments.
