Char (CharmaineElaine) Goodreads description: Danny is only five years old, but he is a 'shiner', aglow with psychic voltage. When his father becomes caretaker of an old hotel, his visions grow out of control. Cut off by blizzards, the hotel seems to develop an evil force, and who are the mysterious guests in the supposedly empty hotel?

Jeshu (jeshusauria) You made the topic! I finally fixed my problems with internet (I messed with the cables, made it worst, and finally got internet again) and I was going to create it now.
Thank you, Char!

Jason Tan Hi everyone,

I finished reading The Shining about 2 months ago, and I absolutely love it. Definitely one of the best novels I've read for the year and the scariest too.

I love how we get to learn so much about each character in the book, so much so that by the end of it, I felt like I've known each of them personally. The plot is also extremely well written. Everything in the book is related at the end, even mundane activities that occurred in the hotel at the beginning of the book.

I find that chapter Watson, is probably one of the funniest chapters I've read in recent times. My favourite characters in this book are Danny and Dick Holloran. There's one particular part in the book, when Danny is afraid (view spoiler) which reminded me of my own fear of objects due to my over imagination when I was a little kid myself.

Stephen King is writing a sequel to The Shining. (view spoiler) I'm looking forward to it :D.

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I'm glad to know your opinion! I've been reading it, but it still doesn't catch me at all. THe fact that you say everything is related at the end is relieving, because I've found myself thinking "Why should I care?" in several occasions while reading it.

Jessi | 49 comments This is one of my all time favorite Stephen King stories. It really freaked me out to the point I couldn't read it late at night at all LOL

Hmm which parts do you feel like it's not really relevant to the story? Maybe I missed something, me eing a fan of the King's books and all. LOL

Jason Tan By the way, anyone who has finished The Shining may be interested in checking this video out. It's Stephen King reading an excerpt of the sequel to The Shining at an award ceremony at George Mason University :D

** reading starts at 29 minutes.

Yes I'm clearly showing my obsession with the King. :D

Well, the part where watson describes the heating system. I thought it was boring.

Hmmm. I hope the book turns out better for you later on :D

Jane (shoxford) | 5 comments I love this Stephen King book, I think it's definitely one of his best although the film really let it down.

Which film version? I've only seen the one that King worked on (the more recent one that lasts ten gjillion hours). Having not read the book, I enjoyed it... though I've never felt the urge to rewatch it.

Probably the one by Stanley Kubrick with Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrence. Was scary when I watched it as a kid. But I recently rewatched it, and find it not as scary as I remember it to be.

Ah, I haven't seen that one. King himself didn't like it because they changed the story too much - like the room number because the hotel didn't want people to be put off staying in that room - and that didn't go down well with him.

Sarah | 4 comments Being that I live not an hour away from where this was shot this was the second King book I read and it did not disapoint!

Lara Ruark i'm looking forward to starting it! i just downloaded it on my kindle....maybe tonight! :)

Jane (shoxford) | 5 comments Yeah the Stanley Kubrick one was the film I was talking about, it doesn't follow the book especially well and I didn't really enjoy it.

Jeshu (jeshusauria) Lara wrote: "i'm looking forward to starting it! i just downloaded it on my kindle....maybe tonight! :)"

Yahoo!!!

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I haven't watched the film. I don't like scary things in general (that's why I'm not reading this book by night!!), so I've always stood away from it. I had no idea that there was another version, I only knew of the existence of Kubrick's one. I have friends who love it XD

I'm glad to say that now I'm enjoying the book, and I'm reading faster than at the beginning. Yeehaa!

Hahaha. Which part are you at now? It's starting to make sense now doesn't it? All the bits and pieces from earlier chapters?

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I'm in the part where (view spoiler).
Yes, everything is starting to make sense now. Yay!

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 34 comments Oooh this is my favorite Stephen King book! To those joining the group read... have fun! :)

Also, I watched the miniseries... Gary Sinise!

Jeshu (jeshusauria) I've finished.
After the first struggles to continue reading, once Jack and his family stayed in the hotel it was a quick ride towards the end. I found myself unable to stop reading, it really caught me.
The book is captivating. The scary scenes didn't make me scream, but I felt a little bit paranoid :P
I liked the ending (view spoiler)

Lara Ruark just so you guys know, there was a tv mini-series that was made...i think in the 90s that follows the book to a T. i can see the actor's face but i can't remember his name....i think you can rent it though....

okay....i got scared last night (view spoiler) and i couldn't finish the chapter...i mean i didn't even start that chapter!!! (view spoiler)

i'm gonna have to start reading this only during daylight hours....

Jeshu (jeshusauria) Lara wrote: "i'm gonna have to start reading this only during daylight hours.... "

hahahaha, this happened to me!!!! Reading only during the day, and at nights reading lighter stuff to forget the trauma XD

Rina (cocopajamas) The problem with reading a book like this is that you have a certain image of what the book is like and what it is about even though you've never actually read it before.

Even on the first couple of chapters before anything had really happened I sat terrified knowing shit was about to happen.

I'm loving it though. It's different than what my mind thought it was going to be. I'm only at 35% but starting to feel the obsessive compulsive over-reading is starting to happen.

(I haven't even read your spoilers as I am prone to do. I'm so proud).

Lara Ruark finished it!!! it didn't creep me out as much as i thought it would....but i liked it....

Jeshu (jeshusauria) Lara wrote: "finished it!!! it didn't creep me out as much as i thought it would....but i liked it...."

Awesome!!! I aslo thought it would be more scary... but I think it's ok that it isn't THAT creepy; otherwise, I would've had problems to sleep :P

Sarah | 4 comments This book didn't scare me as much as it creeped me out! Creeped me out in a good way though, being that this was my second King book and I have read a good chunck of his work since! I am glad that I read the book before seeing the movie!

Anyway, I hope the finish quickly so you can have it and read it soon!

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) SO good! I read this book before watching the movie, and thought the book a hundred times better. They left out some of the best parts! :o
