Hi, my name is Jennifer and I'm sort of what you might call a tech dork. I love gadgets and playing around with them, and I thought Goodreads could handle more than one Kindle group, especially with the forthcoming KINDLE FIRE, which should be totally amazing.

My reading tastes are pretty broad. The feeling I like to get out of books is excitement, so anything that gets my blood pumping is good.

We've got a couple of Kindles kicking around the house, but I'm very excited about getting my hands on the Fire! I'm definitely part of team Amazon too. :)

So who are you? What are your reading tastes and what devices do you use?

message 2: by Kristi (new)

Kristi Holmes Espineira (kholmesespineira) | 1 comments I'm Kristi, and my current Kindle is a 3 (I had the 1 and 2 previously). I love the 3 and probably won't be buying a Touch or Fire. I have an iPad and only rarely read on it -- I get what I call iPad ADD. It's too easy to stop reading and check email, play a game, etc. which is why the Fire doesn't appeal to me right now!

I read a wide variety of genres - literary fiction, women's fiction, YA, mysteries, historical fiction, non-fiction. I love to read, and love the Kindle and Amazon for making it easier for me!

Ann (annrumsey) | 31 comments I am eager to get a Fire tablet, but my dd said I should let it be a Christmas gift.... I don't want to wait! LOL. I will be happy with my K2 and the new ability to get library books - I love free books!
My favorite genres include Mystery Thriller and Suspense, fantasy and biographies. (or anything!)

Welcome everyone!

@Melissa, I know what you mean about it only being a matter of time! When I was watching the announcement and saw the Fire for the first time, I was like ehh...maybe for the holidays, but then I couldn't help myself as soon as it was available to pre-order.

@Kristi, Yes, being distracted can really be a pain. I'll admit that sometimes it takes me 15 minutes of fooling around to actually pick up a book as it is. I'll have to get some discipline!

@Ann, Considering the Fire won't ship until late November, you'll only be a few weeks behind the rest of us. I should make a thread for people about to make their orders!

message 5: by M.A. (new)

M.A. Comley (melcom) | 3 comments I'm Mel, I've only owned a Kindle since January but already think it's the greatest invention. That was until the Fire came along. Can't wait to get one. ;-)

I love reading thrillers and romances but again since owning my Kindle my tastes have been widened. ;-)

It's possible that there's something like that, but I don't know of it specifically. You can make a folder on goodreads with the books you have available to lend, and you could make a thread in this group in the books folder to let people know!

message 7: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Harris Hi! I'm another Melissa. I'm not a gadget freak, but I am a reading nut, and I travel a lot so the kindle is an essential. I got the very first Kindle as soon as it came out, and now have the 2nd generation. I haven't progressed any further (yet) because I just love it.

I am SO TEMPTED by the FIRE. $199 is nearly a no-brainer. I'm with you, Ann, in that I KNOW I'll get it for Christmas if I could just be patient, but I don't think I can!!

message 8: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Harris Oh, and I enjoy reading biographies/memoirs, mystery/thrillers, and anything that makes me laugh. I go through spurts of reading spiritual stuff and political writing.

message 9: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Trudgeon Brown Hi! My name is Elizabeth Brown, and I have enjoyed my Kindle 3 for the past year. Last year, in anticipation of receiving my first Kindle I actually started a blog around the Kindle! It has opened my eyes to so many new authors and genres!

I typically read Lit Fiction, Mystery & Thrillers, and enjoy YA Fantasy (just finished The Hunger Games trilogy!).

Thanks for the invite to the group Jason!

PS - Although I love my K3, I am sooo tempted to get the new touch!

Mlpmom (Book Reviewer) (mlpmombookreviewer) | 4 comments Hey everyone!
I am not really a tech dork but I do have a Kindle and absolutely adore it.
I think I read way more and way faster since owning one. I love the new touch Kindles and look forward to reading what others think of them when they get them.

message 11: by Maria (new)

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) I'm waiting for the Fire to actually come out to assess it, but I just ordered the Kindle 2 3g TODAY.

I'm a gadget freak, er, enthusiast too!

I love mysteries, cozies, urban fantasy, paranormal mysteries...

message 12: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Reeves (barefootdokusha) My name is Jennifer. I have a Kindle 2, I believe. I use it for my reading more than anything else at the moment. I still love hardback books though! I also have an iPad2, that I read one page on and was done reading on it. I will stick with my Kindle for reading. After being on the iPad and my phone I sometimes forget that my Kindle is not a touch screen!

I love to read Young Adult books of almost any kind, Stephen King, John Saul, Dean Koontz, Patricia Cornwell, historical fiction, some westerns...most anything except romances....unless its a rom-com. :)

Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) | 9 comments Hi my name is Stormi and I just got a kindle for my birthday a few months ago, its the cheap one but better than nothing..LOL. I love reading all sorts of books but mainly its YA, thrillers, crime, horror, paranormal. :)

I want a fire really bad!!!

message 15: by Paula (new)

Paula (eden1013) Hi I'm Paula and I've had my K2 for nearly 2 years. I love my K2 though I've order a Kindle Touch. I plan on carrying the Touch in my purse since it's smaller and lighter. The K2 will stay on my nightstand. I'm holding off on the Fire until it comes out and people have actually played with it.

I read mostly thrillers, mysteries, and sci-fi/fantasy, but I'll read almost anything really.

message 16: by Susan (new)

Susan Wingate (susan_wingate) | 1 comments Thanks Rachel, for inviting me to this group! So far, all of my books are available on the Kindle. Wow. The Kindle Fire. Makes you wonder, "What's next?" Amazing times. -Susan :)

message 17: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) Hi everyone. I'm Sheila and a proud K3 owner. My kids got it for me for my BIG 6-0 in April. I have yet to buy any books for it though as there seems to always be an abundance of free books available. I am stoked about the library lending that just started and am currently reading Secrets from the Grave by Tami Hoag which I succesfully dl'd from the library.

OK - True confessions I ordered the Fire yesterday and am counting down the days until shipment :)

Nicole’s Needlework (nicolesneedlework) Hi Everyone,

I'm Nicole. I have a Kindle 3 and an iPad that I currently read on. I have pre-ordered the Fire and the Touch. Looking forward to November! :)

My favorite types of books are historical fiction and mysteries.

I think that just means they are in a group where everyone puts up what they have for lending. I used to hang out on the Nook groups and never heard of an automated system like that. (Could be new so don't quote me.)

There are a couple of lending groups here on Goodreads; I bet there is one for Nook and I know there is at least one for Kindle!!!

message 20: by Brandi ;) (new)

Brandi ;) (clairadncr) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Brandi and I got My Precious ...er, Kindle 3 :) this last March and I am completely addicted. I didn't think I would be because I do love the way a book feels and smells, but my little darling won me over. I still read books from my library when I'm unsure of liking a book and don't want to waste the money, but mostly I am attached to My Precious.
I am on a current PNR/UF kick and it doesn't look like I'm stopping anytime soon. I have a few thriller authors I love and will always read, but I haven't found any new ones that stick with me like the paranormal does.
I haven't crossed into the world of tablets yet. I have very small kids and it is hard enough to keep their little grubbers off my precious, it would be war over the Fire. Maybe someday... :)

message 21: by IUHoosier (new)

IUHoosier | 8 comments Hello all - another Jennifer here, and another gadget geek as well. I currently have an iPad1 and Kindle3 to read on. (I tried the iPad's book reader for about three minutes - ick. I use the Kindle app if I read on my iPad.)

I've ordered two Fires - one for me and one for my husband - he's currently using my old Kindle2, and my mom's got my original Kindle1.

I enjoy fiction of any kind, but naturally migrate towards mysteries, suspense, and fantasy. Or if I'm in a light mood, romantic comedies. Thanks for inviting me to the group!

message 22: by Jan (new)

Jan (libraryhag) Hi, I am Jan and right now I only use the Kindle apps. Now I am torn, Kindle or Fire. I really want to see what the book look like on a Fire. But it is so tempting and I would love magazines in color.

message 23: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pg4003) | 13 comments Hi, my name is Patricia and I too am a Kindle addict. I started out with a K2 and I now have two (yes, two) K3'S and I ordered the Kindle Touch almost as soon as they went up for sale on Amazon. I have one "regular" K3 and one KSO, love the Special Offers. I don't know how I'll like the Kindle Touch but for $99 it was too good to pass up. I just wish they were shipping sooner! I also love to accessorize my Kindle, I have 6 different covers for my K3's and several different bags and sleeves to carry them in, since I make/sell cases for all ereaders.

My favorite author is Stephen King, and I love to read mystery/thriller type books. I had set a goal for myself to read 100 books in 2011 and I met and exceeded that goal about 2 weeks ago.

I didn't order the Kindle Fire because I already have a tablet...not as good as the Fire, but it meets my needs, and I really don't care to read books on that type of screen.

Thanks for creating this group! I love to talk to people who are as crazy as I am about all things Kindle and reading.

message 24: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy (chrissyp) | 3 comments Hello everyone! My name is Christine. I have a K3 3G that my DH got me for Christmas last year. I have pre-ordered him the Fire and myself the Ktouch 3G. I am having buyers remorse on the KT3G for myself since my K3 isn't even a year old but I am going to keep the order out there while I decide what to do.

I love to read! I haven't read this much probably EVER. I pretty much read anything but Sci-Fi and Christian fiction, just not my cup of tea.

message 25: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 293 comments Mod
Welcome, Christine! Thanks for joining us!

@Patricia, you've got a nice collection of Kindles going!

@Jan, Once you walk away from the Kindle apps, you'll never look back. It's just a much better reading experience using the actual Kindle. I'm also excited to see how magazines look on the Fire.

Welcome, Jennifer! 2 Fires sounds like a good idea, much better than fighting over one of them with your husband.

message 26: by Lee Lee (new)

Lee Lee (leeleew) Good Morning everyone!
My name is Lee. I am also a techie. Give me gadgets any day over diamonds and pearls. I have been an owner of the K3 since the release last year. I ordered two kindle fires. One is for me and One is for my 13 year old son. They are our Christmas presents so we have to wait: ( I will still read on my kindle 3 and the Fire will be for browsing the internet while on the couch(instead of my little ipod) and reading on after dh turns out the lights at night(also instead of the ipod)
Do yall ever think that Amazon will get the amount of Apps that Apple has?
Don't forget Apple is making an announcement today!

Just a question for all of you. IF they were to drop the price on the ipad would you cancel your order on you kindle fire. I don't think I would because I think the ipad is too big. My left wrist bothers me sometimes and I dont' think the ipad would help matters.

Welcome, Lee! Smaller is better for me too, so I don't think I would cancel my order if the iPad dropped in price. It's lighter too, I believe. And I'm already hooked into Amazon and not Apple with everything.

message 28: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessika_reads) Hello, my name is Jessica. I own the Kindle DX as well as an ipad. I love the kindle app on it. The ipad comes with the ibooks store and the nook app for barnes and nobbles, but I am an Amazon fan all the way. I don't even use those apps. My DX is currently being used by my sister until she can get her Fire, and then the DX will go back to my daughter for her to read her books on. She's only in Kindergarten but she loves to read and it holds anything she can dream of on it.

I agree that it takes two hands to use my ipad. I got it for work and school, but have a Kindle DX too. I love the light weightedness of the DX, and if the Fire was available when I got the ipad, I'd have for sure gone with it. Still, I can access my Kindle books from my ipad. I like the fire and my sis is getting one. It looks awesome not to mention a lot less bulky for easier travel.

message 30: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 6 comments It looks like the Melissas and Jennifers are taking over this thread.

My name is Melissa as well. I have the K2 and K3 and I am on the fence about the Fire. For reading, I prefer the e-ink. For $199 its almost too good to pass up. I have friends with ipads but I never liked the idea of having another cell bill to pay plus I have not been an Apple fan ever since the whole thing with the book publisher's deal with Apple.

Shari*LoveMiKindle* My name is Shari, and I have a K1 and K2 but I am thinking about upgrading to a Touch. Not that interested in the Fire, although it looks pretty cool. I just prefer the e-ink for reading. I read a little of everything, especially if it's free! :)

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) Hi, I'm Clare! I've had a Kindle 3 since last Christmas and I absolutely love it, especially now that library lending is available. I've been wanting a tablet and I think the Kindle Fire looks great, both for the price and the size, so I've asked for one for my birthday. (It would be a very late birthday present, but that's OK.) If I don't get it I may even be able to buy one myself! I like the Kindle Touch too but I can't think of any reason for me to have two e-ink Kindles.

message 36: by Pam G (new)

Pam G (pgarey) My name is Pam and I started out with the K2, then got the K3 and gave my K2 to my grown daughter. I ordered the Kindle Fire the day it was announced because I had been wanting an ipad but balked at the price. I have no plans to read on anything but my K3. I use my iphone Kindle app when I'm out on the town and love the Whispersync feature! The Fire will work for me when I want to jump online, check email, read magazines, play a game, etc etc. Basically when I don't want to fire up the laptop. Plus I love that it's smaller and lighter than an ipad. I'm very excited about it, and I look forward to swapping info in this group!

Terri | 14 comments My name is Terri and I have a K2i (since Jan 2010) and a K3 WiFi w/SO (since May 2011). I keep my K2i in my purse for travel and my K3 stays beside my bed. I also have Kindle apps on my iPhone (that I now use as an iPod touch LOL), my Android phone, and PC (which I've never used). I pre-ordered the Kindle Fire an hour after the news conference ended. I will be using the Fire for media purposes (video, music, web surfing, magazines)and occasional reading if I don't have either of my Kindles nearby. I have been wanting a tablet for over a year now but I refused to pay $500+ for an iPad.

My main genre in reading is suspense and mystery novels, but since I've owned my Kindle I have been introduced to great books in other genres--thanks to Kindle freebies and message board and FB recommendations) that I probably wouldn't have thought about reading before.

Sheila (sheilaj) I've noticed quite a few of you have more than one Kindle. My question is can you have the same book on both Kindles at the same time? When I get a KFire will I be able to sync my books from my K3 to it? If I read a few chapters in a book on my K3 does it automatically sync with the other Kindles? Thanks

I doubt if I'd buy the iPad over the Kindle Fire, even if the price on the iPad dropped. It's too heavy for me to hold for long periods of time since I have trouble with both wrists from typing at work all day long. I think the Kindle Fire's going to be perfect for me!

Yes!! That's what I love about my Kindles and apps!! I think you can read the same book on up to 6 Kindles/apps at a time. What I do is read my book on my K2 during the day since I keep my K2 in my purse, then pick up where I left off on my K3 when I get home--usually right before bedtime. If I don't have either Kindle with me, I sometimes read on my cell phone using the Kindle app, and it too picks up where I've left off from the other Kindles. Just be sure that your WiFi or 3G is on when you've read the last page so that the other Kindle or app can pick up where you left off.

Niki (nicy) | 3 comments Hi, my name is Niki, 22 years old, from Slovenia and I am avid reader for almost 3 years now. I always loved book, but 3 years ago I have stumbled upon Twilight - New Moon ebook and since then I am kind of addicted. I still read the paperbacks, but in last 3 years I maybe read 4 paperbacks... Not worth mentioning it really...

Yesterday I have finally ordered my Kindle. It's the new one - I find it cute and I can't wait for it to arrive. I have already made a list of possible names for it - I am still deciding if it will be a boy or a girl.

And I am also already looking for new skins and covers - boy or girl, it must be kick-ass good looking :)

I am weird, I know. But still hope you will accept me into your group ;)

Have fun :)

message 44: by K. (new)

K. (eowyn1075) | 2 comments I'm Krista. And this will be my 7th Kindle on my account. I have been buying Kindles and then handing them down to family members as I buy the next latest and greatest. It's been so amazing to see my family enjoy the Kindles and to read so much more. My grandmother couldn't really read at all before a Kindle and my mother found it hard to read the non-large print books so she just kind of gave up on reading much. Now, we are all reading, from my 84 year old grandma down to my 12 year old niece and 9 year old son.

I am really excited about the Kindle Fire and can't wait to try it out. I will also have a Kindle Touch and plan to do most of my reading on eink. This Kindle Fire will probably replace my iPad.

A couple people asked me, "Why would you give up an iPad for a Kindle Fire? The iPad can do everything the Kindle Fire can do and more!" Well the biggest reason is the iPad, being Apple, is not built into the Amazon ecosystem and although I'm a prime member I can't stream anything to my iPad. The next biggest reason is.... it's so gosh darn big and HEAVY (especially compared to the Kindle!) and I just think I will use something smaller a lot more.

You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see someone make a dual carrying case for the Kindle Fire/Kindle Touch and then I can read on one side and take notes on the other! Wouldn't that be AWESOME?? (Hope you case manufacturers out there are listening!)

Anyway, see you around!
Krista

@Niki, Finding a book you love that makes you want to read more doesn't sound weird at all. Welcome to the group! Are you in Slovenia now or just from there? It's an interesting part of the world.

@Krista, Welcome! 7 Kindles is impressive. You've got me beat. I hope there are some manufacturers listening to you, because being able to flip from one to the other would be great. Hopefully you like the Fire and it works out better than your iPad!

I did kind of rush into finding a library Kindle book to borrow because I was so excited about the feature. I'm a huge library reader already so it's natural for me!

Yes, my birthday is already past, it was October 1. We had such a busy September that they didn't get around to buying me anything, so I said, hey... there's this new thing out...

I'm personally really skeptical that they'll come out with a Kindle Fire 3G any time soon. The 3G costs to stream content would be huge, and so there would have to be some kind of phone charge that came along with it. Amazon probably made it easy on themselves by making it Wifi only.

Niki (nicy) | 3 comments @Jennifer I have always lived in Slovenia, but I am planning to go somewhere else when I get the chance.

It is beautiful country, but people are... mean. They talk behind your back, they are looking just for themselves and not for the greater good or for society. It makes me tired. It's hard to find good, true friends.

And the law system is just wrong.

But as the country, nature and everything is really beautiful. And the weather is also always nice. That I will definetly miss one day :)

I thought I was weird because I am obsessing over my new Kindle, which hasn't even arrived yet :D
