Janice (jamasc) Hi to Dutch. I greeted you in another thread. Now that we have a thread just for this purpose, I get to do it all over again.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Welcome everyone and happy list making.

message 3: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Cool idea for a group; looking forward to building my list!

Janice (jamasc) Welcome Kristen!

message 5: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Hi, Kristen. Glad you joined the group. :0)

message 6: by Jessamy (new)

Jessamy Hi everyone! I'm really excited about this book club - just pondering my list as I type. It's my first Goodreads group I've joined so I'm looking forward to getting to know people a bit better over the course of 2012.

message 7: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Hi Jessamay, welcome. Books, books, books galore all about different cultures and set in different countries. Nice, huh?!

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Welcome Jessamy! Joining groups in GR has really invigorated my reading. I hope you enjoy it!

message 9: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Welcome, Jessamy. Having fun putting together list?

Janice (jamasc) Welcome Jessamy! Enjoy!

Vicky (thesevagabondshoes) | 155 comments Hello, loved the idea of this challenge and looking forward to choosing some interesting and different books for it.

message 12: by Ilona (new)

Ilona (iloenchen) | 12 comments Hello everybody! I just joined because I love reading books from different countries. I'm hoping to get some inspiration here for stuff to read. :) Making a list is going to be really awesome! What a great idea.

message 13: by Ann (new)

Ann Al-Bahish | 5 comments Hello all. I just joined and I have a really dumb question, because I am new to Goodreads too. How do you link to the books via Goodreads that we want to put on our list? I am technically challenged I fear.

No problem Ann! Above the comment box is a link that says "add book/author," and you can do the search and it will embed it right in there for you. Just know that if you start with a long list and then add links, the links will always drop to the bottom, and you'll have to copy and paste it. Try it and see how it goes!

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 253 comments Hello! I just joined. This is such a great group.

message 16: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Welcome, welcome. Love your list and your enthusiasm. I know you will love this group. Your thesis might suffer a little. D)

message 17: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 253 comments Thanks so much Anne! I seriously hope my thesis doesn't suffer. Is everyone going to wait for 2012?? I am going to start from today! :)

message 18: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I think a few people have started reading. The only rule is to link your books (!).

message 19: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Hi y'all! So glad I found this group...because I consider myself a global citizen. Originally from Bangladesh, I'm now in West Texas. Looking forward to putting together my list :)

Just to be clear: we can each have our own lists and read different things as long as they are from different countries? I think I'm going to choose by setting as well.

message 20: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Welcome, Mina. Yes, everyone does make up their own list of books. The master list is a great reference - you can see what others have on their lists. Also check out the recommendations by country. Have fun making your list.

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Thanks for the information Anne! I appreciate it :)

You already have the cowboy hat. You are a certified Texan now.

*grin* and I bagged me a cowboy!

message 25: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Good for you. You even have the lingo. Well, I'll bet your cowboy taught you some of that. Now all you need is the horse. Or do you have that already as well?

message 26: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Anne wrote: "Now all you need is the horse. Or do you have that already as well?"

Nope, no horse. The one time I got on a horse, it ran off with me and a cowboy (not the one I married) had to chase us down...so staying away from horses (but not cowboys...hmm, should get rid of the "s" there).

Anne (reachannereach) Mina wrote: "but not cowboys...hmm, should get rid of the "s" there)."

Yeah, what about that "s""? Texans can be jealous. Sounds like you're having too much fun in Texas. You drive a pick-up truck?

BTW, I lived in Texas on and off for a few years. I was in East Texas and Dallas. Now I'm in Colorado. Had to get away from those fire ants.

message 29: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Oh wow, so you're a transplant too...cool! I have visited Colorado, beautiful place & home to some amazing authors that I admire.

For me Texas is now home. And yes, I did have a pick-up (so I wouldn't have to depend on anyone everytime I moved)...but then I settled down & traded it in for a family car :) He still has his.

So nice to meet you! :)

message 30: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Nice to meet you too, Mina. I'm not really from Texas, just spent a few years there. Spent most of my life in Los Angeles and NYC.

message 31: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Ah, you're a sister nomad then :)

message 32: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Exactly.

message 33: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Nomad Resume: Southern CA, Northern CA, NYC, TX, NM, CO, Israel.

message 34: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Let's just say that I didn't chose any of them for the weather. Southern CA has good weather, but I didn't chose it, my parents did.

message 35: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Ooh more nomads!

My Nomad Resume: Pakistan, Bangladesh, ship, Bangladesh, Texas, Pennsylvania, West Texas

(Ship: My father was a sailor, so spent a part of my childhood on ships)

message 36: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Part of me did -- there's nothing like seeing a whale come up beside the ship or a storm at sea. Exciting.

However, as a kid I found it very lonely because well, there weren't too many families aboard. My dad --the captain--had his and the chief engineer had his.

Cofused. I thought we were making the list now, and reading in 2012...eek, am I already behind?

message 44: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Mina, no you're not behind. Pragya wants to start early.

Definitely.

message 47: by Mina (new)

Mina Khan (spicebites) | 23 comments Lol, true! But my experience at sea made me who I am today: While I enjoy company, I don't mind alone time...in fact, I think my love for stories --both reading and writing grew from there.

message 48: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Mina, given your life on boats, you must enjoy reading books about such life. Have your read The Cat's Table by Ondaatje? I cannot make up my mind about this book. Should I read it? Onddaatje's writing is special.

I admire Ondaatje's writing a lot, and I have heard a lot of good things about The Cat's Table. It sounds intriguing and I just added it to my tbr shelf :)

If you get to it first, let me know what you think!

Lol, my mother had her fill & refuses to travel now. Me, totally opposite. :) Welcome aboard matey!
