Suggestions for books with both science fiction and fantasy elements.

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 37 comments The Dragon Riders of Pern searies stands out in my mind.

Geoff (buyerofgadgets) Split Infinity and Dream Park. Dream Park is really straight science fiction but much of the book is set within a fantasy role-playing game so I think it qualifies in spirit.

Marc (authorguy) | 121 comments Much as I dislike Christopher Stasheff's work, The Warlock in Spite of Himself is the story of a space traveler who discovers a colony planet where they have an Elizabethan culture which interprets their own psychic powers as magic.

Pete Skimin (pjskimin) | 1 comments The Saga of Recluce series by Modesitt L.E. Jr. has elements of both. There are hints of it in the first few books and book six,Fall of Angels, actually starts aboard a starship in space before the crew becomes marooned on a primitive "fantasy" planet.

Perfect example, it is probably the 1st series I read that (very cleverly, mind you)has a story scope where the civilization, in this case space-colonists 'devolve' over long periods of time into what we recognize as a fantasy civilization. In other words from starships to dragons.

Chris | 3 comments I think 329: a fable would fit here. It anthropomorphizes an atom.

Sarah Baethge (22niel) | 5 comments well The Speed of Darkness has scientific animal testing on fantasy creatures, so I guess you could almost call it both

message 10: by Tyrone (new)

Tyrone (28daysearlier) I can make the following recommendations that have both elements;

The Cyborg and the Sorcerers by Lawrence Watt-Evans and The Wizard and the War Machine by Lawrence Watt-Evans by Lawrence Watt-Evans

And in a darker series than normal from Piers Anthony the Battle Circle (Battle Circle, #1-3) by Piers Anthony
