Magdelanye | 2851 comments whilst banished from easy contact with my group, I kept up the connection by reading that book some of you loved so much and I amazed myself by actually buying when I had the opportunity. That is Soulless Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger and the next surprise was that I really enjoyed it. Kinkajou I dont think finished it, saving for a rainy day? My boss was actually horrified when I showed it to him.

I also officially finished Snowboarding to Nirvana, but that is a book I wont be finished with ever, methinks, so wonderful are the meditations.

I will be writing these both up soon as I get caught up. For now I have amazed myself again with my next choice, because I had to apply all my resolve to begin another popular fiction book, another paranormal romance I believe, but I felt now was as good a time as any, on a bit of a roll even,so I am checking out another very popular author James Patterson and I am reading Sundays at Tiffanys. Anybody know him, or it?

I am in process of choosing a morning read for tommorrrow, down to between 3 titles. I will report when the decision has been made.

The amazing thing is not so much I am reading a book that I am embarrassed to be seen with, for its part of my reading plan to explore off my regular pathways. What amazed me was that as I was busy being put off by this or that, unexpectedly, on page 33 I was so moved by the scenario between Jane and her imaginary friend that I found I was actually crying. Oh well, lets keep this a secret!

Ann A (readerann) Looks like I may have to read Soulless, as I also like to step out of my comfort zone occasionally (the last time I did that was with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - it started off o.k, but I got bored with it).

As for James Patterson, year ago I read a couple of his early novels that were in a guest house at which I was staying. I didn't like them at all. I have read comments that he got much better, but I haven't been able to make myself give him another try.

I just finished 3 books in a row that I rated either 4 or 5 stars, which almost NEVER happens with me (I tend to rate most books between 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 stars). They are Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (over 2 months on this one), Here Comes Trouble by Michael Moore, and Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Ice Bear (neilar) | 838 comments The Gift

From the library and the first few pages are encouraging.

Magdelanye | 2851 comments The Patterson book surprised me, I admit to finding it charming without being cloying or saccarine. It was just what I needed, a little soother.
I have finished it, and jumped into Slapstick Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut

Started SEEDS OF LIGHT Healing Meditations for Body and Soul by Elizabeth K. Stratton
this will be another of these lifelong books.

I am still in awe of anyone who gets through Infinte Jest. 2 months at least dedicated to the task...

Jim Finished The Awakening. Now working on Middlemarch and The Histories.

Magdelanye | 2851 comments You must be a powerfully fast reader Jim. Werent you reading chronologically, and only recently on the Peloponisians? From Helen of Troy to Kate Chopin is quite a leap. And THEN Middlemarch??
Whist reading Heroditus!

May I put in a good word for Heraclitus?

Not really fast, but tenacious...

I continue to read the ancients, basically chronologically, but alternate with other books from a few groups I follow.

For the most part, I can only read two books concurrently, or within a different day. The Awakening is fairly short, so I set aside Herodotus for a few days and read TA and Middlemarch, which complement eachother - a sort of literary mash-up.

Yes, I should add Heraclitus. I also want to add Hesiod's Theogony - but not today!

Ice Bear (neilar) | 838 comments Turning out to be a long week - perhaps we should move to fortnightly or monthly. If the system does not kick me out, I will amend the header.
