Sue I just took a look at the membership page being a bit curious. I remember when there were 5 or 6 of us. There are now 6 pages of members! This group has really taken off--and we were there early on.

Niledaughter Reading process became crazy for me lately , when are you planning to start this one ?

message 19: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I think my schedule says May1st, though I may start a bit later than that. I haven't started the MENA books yet---thank goodness they are for long periods of time. I seem to be reading non-scheduled books quickly and planned books quite slowly lately.

I'm willing to read it whenever is good for you ND.

Sue I haven't been back to My Name is Red for some time. So many books. But at least I did read Palestinian Walks, which was so good.

Mid May sounds good to me, though I think I'll be busy with reading for some time.

MENA is a great group Paras. I've been introduced to so much I never would have known or experienced and books I never would have read.

Paras, I've been able to find some books through the library exchange and some books have been available at good prices through online booksellers. Of course it depends on making choices and priorities. Good luck with your book searches.

Susan | 83 comments Was not Online for awhile so did not realize this read would be.mid May. Started on the 3rd and it is a fabulous read!

message 32: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue Yep, some of us decided to delay a bit. I'm glad you're enjoying it. I recall enjoying the beginning sample at Amazon before I bought the book.

Susan | 83 comments Have to read Blood, Bones, and Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef for my RL Nf group meet on Tuesday so stopped The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle at Book three. Will join the rest of you when caught up.

message 34: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue Sounds good.

Parsa | 101 comments Anyone started reading it already? Its mid may

Parsa | 101 comments I havent started it yet but I plan to do over the weekend.

message 37: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I will take it off the book shelf today. I just picked up 4 more books from the library too. I am inundated with reading but it's a good thing as long as I keep my head above the books.

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) | 60 comments I listened to this recently, and reviewed it earlier today. So when you all start your discussions I'll jump in.

Susan | 83 comments I started the beginning of the month and then stopped until you all were ready ... anxious to get started on it again. Wonderful Book!

message 40: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue Just started and plan to read more tonight. I really like his writing so far.

Parsa | 101 comments started reading it other day. seems interesting so far.

i agree with sue, i like his writing too

Parsa | 101 comments i am half way through too. its a fascinating read though i have been reading slowly these days. i wu like to discuss it. we shud do it if we get few conscents. has anyone finished reading?

message 43: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I'm about 1/4 through the book Judy and I like it. To me, it seems like a question of "what is life, what is reality, what do we know (or think we know)," all the essentials, but done in a wonderful way. I'm sure there are amazing things waiting for me on future pages.

Another thing that struck me is the translation. The English translation is perfect while retaining what seems like the Japanese essence of the characters, behavior, and story.

Susan | 83 comments I have read the first two parts but am out of town. Thought I had packed it but had brought another instead. Really LOVE this book and looking forward to reading more from this author. Excellent point about the translation. The words just flow but the culture and atmosphere come through so well. I lived in Okinawa in 1978 - 1980 and I was just transported back as I read. Loving this book!

Parsa | 101 comments this book has made me aware of japanese culture, its economics, geographyand religion. but this book doesnt make feel like an outsider to that world. it feels m there experiencing this.

Judy, yes, that an excellent idea. i wouldnt want to spoil the book foranyone. though honestly i wasnt expecting this book to be as interesting as it turn out to be.

message 46: by Niledaughter (new) - added it

Niledaughter I am not sure when I will read what any more, but I am following this discussion .

Parsa | 101 comments The storyline doesnt offer much. Actually when I bought the book in Dec 11, I mixed up synopsis for two of the writer's books so I wasnt muhc impressed with the storyline of this book. But when I started reading this book, the flow of writing is amazing. And the smaller stories of other characters makes the book richer. This book is like life, taking part of everyone's story to create okada's. I am looking forward to reading how the book ends though I feel, may be I'll feel a bit sad at finishing this book.

Though I am sure this is not a book for everyone. While I read this book, I feel as if one is peeling of scabs from an almost healed wound. I am not sure why this certain picture came in my mind but this book is that slow and curious and bring out new layers. I hope my imagination didnt gross out anyone :/

Parsa | 101 comments What about you Judy, How do you feel abt the book?

I wonder which characters everyone found interesting so far.

message 49: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I just finished Book I last night so I have the images of that stealth trip to Mongolia in my head. I prefer to remember the well to Yamamoto's end. Honda is a very interesting character, as are Malta and Creta.

These people who appear and disappear. I love how everyone plays off Okada, he the some what passive receptor. I'm sure many of you know more details than I do from having read further but these are some of my impressions.

What do we know, who are we, who is that sitting opposite me, can we know them, what is the future, the past. What is life. What is in that package and where is the cat.

message 50: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue I know! Eventually someone always comes back to the cat.
