So someone asked me for dragon-centric books the other day and I totally blanked.

I mean, there's Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, and Dragonlance, which I read so long ago that I can't remember if it involved a lot of actual dragons. And then I was like, buh... ? books?

I think she read Eragon already. and the next time I see her I'll have to remember The Smoke Thief. But beyond that I'm stumped, and I've really been thinking about it hard. Anyone else have good suggestions? Title/author/your humble opinion please--I really would like to know if you think it's worth reading.

That's funny, because when I saw this post, I blanked out too. Here's some stuff from my bookshelf besides the ones you've mentioned. (and yeah... there is no dragons in Dragonlance--didn't think about that before).

Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke (YA)
DragonSpell series by Donita K. Paul (Christian Fiction)
Icefire series by Chris D'Lacey (YA)
Magyk, Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage (YA, there's a dragon in it)
The Dragon's Eye: The Dragonology Chronicles, Volume 1 (YA)

That's all I can remember for now.

Gisela (chicadorlando) | 180 comments How about The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik? The books are:Temeraire: His Majesty's Dragon,Throne of Jade,Black Powder War,Empire of Ivory, and Victory of Eagles.

Hope this helps!

Angela (angelamclaughlin) Patricia C. Wrede has a dragon series for YA

Emily | 40 comments Yes, I highly recommend Patricia C. Wrede's The Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Dealing with Dragons / Searching for Dragons / Calling on Dragons / Talking to Dragons! Very good, sweet books. Although I'd say they were more middle grade than YA.

Lexie (poisonedrationality) | 172 comments Elizabeth Kerner's books Song in the Silence, Redeeming the Lost and The Lesser Kindred are very good. As is Mary Brown's The Unexpected Dragon Trilogy (there's four in the series actually if you count the original The Unlikely Ones. And then there is Marjorie B. Kellogg's Dragon Quartet (The Book of Earth, The Book of Water, Book Of Fire and The Book of Air: Volume Four of the Dragon Quartet).

Oh! And there's Katie MacAlister's Silver Dragon books (Up In Smoke and Playing With Fire (the Aisling Grey books also feature the Dragon Septs, in particular the Green Sept) if you like paranormal romance.

I know of at least two more series if not books, but for the life of me I can't recall.

Very cool! Thanks for all the input, ladies! I'm going to have to put all of these on my to-read list (some are already on there). At least I will be a little more prepared the next time someone asks me for dragon books. Darned if I won't still think, Dragonlance! and then realize it's not mainly about dragons at all.

If you think of any more (anyone) go ahead and post, I'll be checking this thread again!

Stephanie The Dragonlance books by Tracy Hickman are really good. I fell in love with the characters.

1-Dragons of Autumn Twilight
2-Dragons of Winter Night
3-Dragons of Spring dawning
4-Dragons of Summer Flame

The next four are connected to the firts four by main characters

Twins
1-Time of the Twins
2-War of the Twins
3-Test of the Twins

Then comes....

1-The Second Generation

all by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis

Becky (igiggle) I really liked The Last Dragonlord and Dragon and Phoenix by Joanne Bertin. I wish she would write the third one.

I also recommend the Truth Series from Dawn Cook:
First Truth
Hidden Truth
Forgotten Truth
Lost Truth

Sarah | 13 comments I saw some great ones up there-- Jessica Day George's Dragon Slippers is hands down my favorite dragon book EVER. Patricia Wrede's The Enchanted Forest Chronicles: Dealing with Dragons / Searching for Dragons / Calling on Dragons / Talking to Dragons are some of my favorites, and Jane Yolen's The Pit Dragon Chronicles, Volumes 1-3: Boxed Set: Dragon's Blood, Heart's Blood, and A Sending of Dragons are also definitely worth reading (as are many others listed here, but those deserved honorable mention despite already being listed). Another must read is Mercedes Lackey's Dragon Jousters series, Joust, Alta, Sanctuary, and Aerie. Mercedes Lackey has written some enjoyable books, but these are by FAR my favorites of hers. She's always been good a world-forming, and I was totally drawn in from the very first time I met Vetch, a serf transported from unrelenting drudgery to the wonderful world of dragons! I suppose you could call it a coming of age story-- but really it's all about the dragons. :)
Alison Goodman's Eon: Dragoneye Reborn was promising, but I'm withholding judgement until I read the sequel.
Robin McKinley has written some amazing books, but her only dragon-oriented one to date is Dragonhaven. I have to say that I was disappointed the first time I read it, right after it came out-- it was rambling and confusing and odd, and I wasn't engrossed at all; hardly up to McKinley's usual standards-- but I picked it up again last year and found that age had greatly improved it. Try this book out-- it may not be your cup of tea, but you might just discover that you love it. Oh-- I suppose that The Hero and the Crown has dragons too... but it's mostly about dragon-slaying, rather than dragons. All the same, if you like kickass dragon-slaying redheads, check it out. :)
Vivian Vande Velde's Dragon's Bait holds a lot of awesomeness in its disappointingly few pages! If you like enigmatic dragons and a tenacious heroine with a mind bent on revenge, this book is for you.
T.A. Barron is one of my favorite childhood authors, and I still follow his books despite being older now. His Merlin's Dragon series is great for laughs and fun! Definitely recommended for young and old! C:

Kelly RAley (kraley) Dragonsinger by McCaffery is still one of my favorites. I loved the idea of a personal fire dragon that was the size of a chihuahua. Dragon Rider by Funke was a little slow for me.

Janette (jljn) | 5 comments Firelight by Sophie Jorden is great beginning to a series with dragons.
