I know personally, i hate it but it is needed sometimes. What's you opinion?

message 2: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ I like it better when authors refrain from swearing -- unless a character is really pissed off for a good reason, or if it's one of a character's traits that they swear a lot or something. and even then, it's not exactly necessary. but it doesn't really bother me. if a book has a few swears in it, no big deal. it's when the author randomly uses swears every other sentence that it starts to annoy me.

message 3: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Uhhh, if I hadn't gotten a better idea, that would have been my nano novel.

And there wouldn't have been a way around it. I mean, you can't fully characterize the MC that happens to swear a lot by just saying, "she cursed" or "she uttered a foulty"

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
oh yea!!!!! I had forgotten! lol!

Xerxes Break(Vivian Ephona) (ephona) I think you should just use alternative or make you're character not the cussy type.

message 10: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) same w/ E

message 11: by T.O.L.I., ~the ruler, and dictator......not really~ (new)

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
ok good idea, and how about fake curse words that make no sense in the real world but are really bad in the book?

message 12: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) lol like "floogles!"

message 13: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I feel that it depends. If the character is of a type that swearing comes naturally, I say let him do it. If the character is of a type that they had never uttered a swear word in her life, then there should be no swearing at all coming from her. I think that it all depends on the character's disposition whether she swears or not.

message 14: by T.O.L.I., ~the ruler, and dictator......not really~ (new)

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
yes seth like floogles.

and randi i know what you mean...its kind of creepy that your characters come so to life when you are writing, it'r like they are sitting in the rrom with you!

message 15: by Seth (new)

Seth (ninjaaaaaofwritingbooks) yeah, but i still think floogles is better

message 16: by T.O.L.I., ~the ruler, and dictator......not really~ (new)

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
LOL!!!!!

message 17: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ i used a swear in my nanowrimo ... but it was only one. and idk ... i think it was necessary. or at least realistic. XD but i don't use swears often.

haha. instead of saying the f-word i say thump. THUMP YOU!!!

message 18: by T.O.L.I., ~the ruler, and dictator......not really~ (new)

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
LOL!!!!! ooo thats funny, i mean in my nano the character said "what the hell" or scared the hell out of..... but only that

message 19: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellerobins) haha, we are assigned to write a novel by dec. 5 for double english, we can use up to three swears per page, unless its the kinda thing you'd get suspended for...

message 20: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) lol. I'm sure that some people will go to the limit on that...

And I've been considering using fake swears in this nano, because the normal ones wouldn't fit, and my MC (though she changed) is really very similar to my other MC, but in a different setting. I mean, Constance is a bit less overall angry and a bit more homicidal than Jackie. :D

message 21: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellerobins) interesting...so you mean words like "sheepskin" and the like??

message 22: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Maybe.

Well, more of insults really. She might just think them in her head though. See, if she insulted the king, he could behead her (but he wouldn't, for reasons that will later be revealed)and she isn't willing to risk that.

Because if she was dead, then she couldn't kill the king!

message 23: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michellerobins) true, true

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
yes, yes i have

message 35: by Daisy (new)

Daisy good.....

message 36: by Leiko (new)

Leiko Xantara (arrogant_protector) My opinion is if it fit's the character, have them swear. For example I have a character who always curses, but it wouldn't work if he didn't. But also don't use bad ones.

message 37: by T.O.L.I., ~the ruler, and dictator......not really~ (new)

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
well that makes sense....i guess

message 38: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I agree with Lye.

Kjersti but you can call me Captain Erm...a lot of ppl complain that I swear too much in my writing...but I think if a situation is particularly intense or if you're writing about foul-mouthed little high schoolers that it's okay.

message 40: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) I agree. If it is set in a high school, chances are that your MC will swear quite a bit. Unless, of course, they are like my friends, who rarely swear.

message 41: by Kenzie (new)

Kenzie ....unless we've had a few too many tylenols and skittles. XD

message 42: by Sella (last edited Nov 10, 2008 02:00PM) (new)

Sella Malin Do you people consider words like "dang, damn, god, crap, and hell" as swearwords? Because my main character for my nano story uses those words sometimes...that's the kind of character he is...

message 43: by Daisy (new)

Daisy I only consider Damn a swear word but I really don't care.

message 44: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) well, I don't thing dang god or crap are swear words, and the other two aren't if they are in context. For instance, saying, "If you don't accept god, you will burn in hell," (which I don't believe is true, fyi) isn't swearing.

message 45: by T.O.L.I., ~the ruler, and dictator......not really~ (new)

T.O.L.I. (taleoflostink) | 410 comments Mod
Yea, some people think it is but I dont

message 46: by Dee (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 185 comments When inserting curse words, the real hard core ones, always consider who your readers will be and what are your intentions for marketing your story.

Many contests will reject a story with the F word, but other will allow its usage.

Bottom line, either write for yourself or for your market.

Dee Marie

message 47: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) Or, the parents could forbid your characters to swear, so they use euphemisms instead! I've found amusement in "ficus," but "shitaki" or "shitaki mushrooms" annoys me.

Normally, I am all for characters showing their personality through speech, which could easily involve swearing, but I learned the word "euphemism" today and could not resist the opportunity to use it properly.

Now I shall have a party in my head to celebrate the elimination of "being" verbs from my post!

message 48: by Dee (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 185 comments Well Done Roni

Euphemisms can be down right hysterical, especially in romance novels. Please don't get me started.

I personally love my new favorite word...Snarky.

message 49: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (v_a_b) OOO, that sounds fun. I do not know for sure what that means. perhaps an online dictionary will be of help.

message 50: by Dee (last edited Dec 02, 2008 05:32PM) (new)

Dee Marie (dee_marie) | 185 comments Snarky.

As in, Geez you are in a snarky mood today.

Or, man was that salesperson was snarky to you.

Snarky = grumpy person
