Tyson Kunz | 7 comments Hello, I am new to these books and I love them. I saw this disscussion group and I was hoping to find a discussion of the top zombie books to read. Maybe I could get this started and see what people think. When I type "zombies" in the search box at the library. I get a lot of these zombies books that have zombies talking, and living everyday lives with everyone else. Are those books any good? I thought these books are mainly supposed to be like "surviving a world epidemic" So I would love some suggestions.

Kat (katzombie) | 7 comments Hi Tyson,

I could give you a list as long as a zombies arm, but you are more than welcome to check out my Zombie shelf if you need some ideas - I've got 55 books there and I've read and rated more than half of them :)

The Reading List (Megan) | 1 comments If you want zombies that live amongst humans also check out My Life As a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland and Dead Mann Walking by Stefan Petrucha. Both are very unique interpretations of zombie reanimation.

For post apocalyptic, mindless, zombies--infecting and eating everything in their path, check out Feed by Mira Grant.

Though it isn't about zombies, technically, the vampires in The Strain by Guillermo del Toro have zombie-like qualities. Not typical vampires in any sense. Possibly one of my favorites.

I have reviews of all of them, except Dead Mann Walking (just finished reading that one...) on GoodReads and my blog. You can find the links on my profile.

Happy reading!

Char I recently read Resurrection:Zombie Epic. It was definitely old school zombies, though it was a bity wordy. Overall, pretty good!

Ramsey Campbell | 1 comments If you enjoy a little British horror, Dead Beat by Remy Porter a very good zombie novel. His style reminded me a lot of the early work of James Herbert.

Louie (rmutt1914) I prefer the non talking zombies and enjoy the surviving-the-apocalypse aspect of these stories. So I recommend-
Day by Day Armageddon and Beyond Exile By JL Bourne
(leans heavily toward the survivalist aspects)

Allison Hewitt Is Trapped by Madeline Roux
(a new media view of the zombie apocalypse)

Dead City by Joe McKinney
(from the POV of a city cop on the streets when the undead take over)

For a completely original take check out-
David Wellington's "Monster Trilogy"
1. Monster Island
2. Monster Nation
3. Monster Planet

Brenton J. (Atrum_Terra) | 3 comments Here is a link to my humble take on zombies.

What will it be like when the world really ends? Do you think that your Doomsday television shows and your Survival internet forums have prepared you for what is really coming? Do you think you will be able to keep your sanity with no cellular phone, no automobile, and no electricity? Will you be able to steal to stay warm, eat the family pet so you do not starve, or kill another human being to stay alive? You do not really want the world to end, not like this.

Atrum Terra: Dark Lands tells the story of two people from different sides of the nation that struggle to survive after a devastating attack breaks the back of the United States. It is a journey in which the whole world is sent spiraling towards a dark future where humans are an endangered species.

Jonathan Fisher is an average man living in Minnesota whose very sanity is tested when everything about his normal life is ripped away in an instant. He is left to survive in a new world full of victims, brigands, and a man made plague that turns its victims into violent, mindless cannibals.

Miguel Alverez is a Marine recruit trainee in California when the attack begins. He is thrown into active duty and must overcome the terror of a war from two sides as a biological weapon turns America's citizens against one another while enemy forces close in on the nation's borders.

message 21: by Corey (new)

Corey Lamb (officialcoreylamb) | 8 comments Yea, most zombie books out there are about "surviving a world epidemic", which is fine, but there are plenty that stray from that path. For example (here comes the pitch), in my recently published horror/comedy I Am Become Zombie, the main character is a freshly-turned zombie. One of the first few, actually. He can't talk, but he can think, and he basically spends his downtime speculating about the world and his afterlife. He eventually decides to make the best of it and kick-start the apocalypse after a bunch of idiot zombies start following him around.

I tried to make the story something that hadn't really been done before. Whether I succeeded or not is up to the readers, but I didn't want to write a cookie-cutter zombie novel. I actively seek titles that go against the current, so I tried to write with that same mindset. If you like zombie stories, I'd love to hear what you think of mine :)

message 22: by Derek (new)

Derek Thomas | 3 comments I am a huge fan of the zombie/virus epidemic that leads to chaos/world destruction/post-apocalypse settings. The Remaining series by D.J. Molles is very good. Love his style. The Island series by David Wellingon is good. Day by Day Armageddon by JL Bourne is a cool take on zombies that I really enjoyed. I started up a zombie series called The Demented Z that currently has two books, The Demented, and The Demented: Desolation. These are fast paced, world chaos style. Love it if some people gave them a read.

In this second installment of the Zombies! series the horror continues as Randy and Kelly continue to battle their way towards Florida, Brenda and the girls keep fighting to stay alive and Kyler fights hard to make his way in this new world order. In this book the struggle to survive continues to get more intense as groups come together to keep outsiders out. The Zombies continue to get hungrier and the desperate people of the world grow ever more desperate.

If you enjoy adventure and horror mixed together then check out the Zombies! series for a Dystopian journey through a post-apocalyptic world gone mad.
