The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
question
What's going on with Fred?

In the book, Fred is described mainly as purely repulsive. This, of course, is because his "talent" is to trick a person's mind into being so disgusted by him that they can't even focus in his direction long enough to see who's there. Bree takes refuge around Fred, though it causes her painful revulsion, to protect herself from the other, more reckless vampires that have the tendency to murder when annoyed. After a while, Fred begins allowing Bree within his bubble, so she no longer feels disgusted near him and can hide more comfortably. I don't understand why Fred took so long to trust Bree. She never caused trouble, never brought attention to herself. She did just the opposite, really. Why didn't Fred ease up a bit and they'd help one another find out what on earth was going on? Didn't he want a friend?

Perhaps he couldn't control his 'talent' early on - just like Bella in BD takes time to manage hers and so he can't restrict its reach. Also - if I'd just been randomly attacked and drawn into a vampire army where people kept ripping each other apart, I think I'd be thinking very carefully about whether I really wanted to make friends there at all.
His talent may not have worked that way. It may have just worked on all people, or no one, and maybe couldn't be directed at just certain people.
I got the impression that Fred was always a loner type and never had many friends. He also didn't like being the center of attention. Perhaps Bree always trying to hide behind him brought unwelcomed attention to him.

Hmmm... That's one thing I didn't like about this book. You never really got to know anyone but Bree. But that's the way it was supposed to be so *shrug*
I think he wanted to be left alone. He probably wasn't very impressed by the other vampires in the house and didn't want to socialize with them.

It could be one of a few things. WHat I think is that he probably didn't trust any of them. New borns are pretty out of control so how was he to know that one of them that he trusted wouldn't turn on him any second? Also maybe he just couldn't control the talent yet? I think the first reason is probably more likely though.
