Ami E. Bowen How would you pronounce Cassia's name? I've watched some book reviews for the first novel Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie on YouTube and some say her name like 'Cass-e-uh' and others like 'Cash-uh'.

Thanks for your input! Btw I'm only about 30-some % of the way through 'Crossed' so no spoilers, please! ^_^

my frends and i say cass-e-uh

Ela On her website, Ally Condie answered a FAQ about this. She said that you pronounce Cassia's name as 'Cash-uh' :)

Sarah Cassia doesn't read "cash-uh" so why'd author spell it like that? She coulda dropped the "i" and it would've read more like the way she intended. I always read it as "cass-e-uh."

message 5: by Ela (new) - added it

Ela Ally Condie said that Cassia was a type of plant and that that was how you spelt it and that was how you pronounced it :)

Ami E. Bowen I heard the audiobook reader pronounce it 'Cash-uh' and if the author says that's the way to say her character's name than I guess that's it. Still looks like a 'Cass-e-uh' name to me and probably will to first time readers without Internet access or a name-pronouncing glossary of some sort in the book. Or unless they know of the plant of the same name and to pronounce it as Cash-uh from the get go.

message 7: by Ela (new) - added it

Ela Yeah, when I first read 'Matched', I read her name as "cass-e-uh" until I read the FAQ with Ally Condie :)

Mazz Nixon I think Cassia fits perfectly for the character however I say it different in my head, but I do that with characters in all books.

Julie I have always said "Cass-e-uh" but "Cash-uh" makes sense. Cassius is a male name and it's pronounced "Cash-us", so Cassia would be the same thing.

message 10: by Kay (new) - rated it 3 stars

Kay I pronounced it Cass-e-uh, up until i read this.(:

I always pronounced it cass-e-uh. It just sounds better than Cash-uh. IT almost sounds like Kesha when I say it Ally Condie's way! That just doesn't fit with the character, I'm sorry! I don't know, it just sounds weird, doesn't it?

Rachel I thought it was Cass-e-uh until I went to hear Ally Condie talk at the library on Crossed. It's pronounced Cash-uh. And like yall, my brother said sounded like Kesha. But actually it's after a plant and with a K it's a literary element. Condie said she named her Cassia because of the nature/literary meanings.

message 13: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee Cass-e-uh (:

Hannah Deondra wrote: "Cass-e-uh (:"

that is how I say it and it does make the most sense it is a tiny bit closer to Cass-ur which does not sound nice or make any sense at all

Airicka Phoenix I was listening to the audio and the narrator pronounced it Cash-uh.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Cass-ya is how I read it. :P

message 17: by Zoey (new) - added it

Zoey Smith My name is Kasia. My mother and I pronounce it like Asia but with a K. So, Kay-juh. It was exciting for me to read a book where I read the main characters name like mine because Cassia and Kasia are so very similar.

Stéphanie Cass-y-a i guess. but not like kesha.

Siobhan I always read it as Cass-e-ah but Cash-uh makes sense to me (just from my name, it's pronouced Shuh-von, but obviously spelt like someone's worst turn at scrabble. The Si- makes a sh sound with gaelic names)

Cassie Well My name is spelled similar to hers so I pernounce Cassia ca-see-uh Maria

- My name is Cassie Marie

Sadie Scott I pronounced it cass-e-ah until i read this but i think im gonna stick with how i pronounced it. I like the name cassie and how its pronounced but i really didnt like this name and now that i know how you actually pronounce it i dont like it at all....did anyone not like the name?

Cassie I feel the same, I liked the cass-ee-uh rather than cash-a

Amanda I listened to Ally Condie say her name and pronounced it as Cash-uh. I think the name sounds kind of pretty; its different.

Kailey I saw cas-ee-ah

Cassie Amanda that makes sense, I think it's pretty and different too

Vee Gretzinger ew i hate her name. it makes me want to puke...like the book

Nellie ☾ At first I was switching from Cash-a and then Cass-ee-ah...then I pronounced it as Cass-ee-ah up to when I read Crossed. Now that I read the FAQ and I found this, iI guess I was wrong xD

Alyssa I pronounced it 'Cass-ee-uh'.

Alyssa I don't mind 'Cash-uh' but it kind of reminds me of Ke$ha...

Suzanna Hoang I've come to the conclusion that in the future we're all going to have very strange names.

message 31: by Cara (new) - rated it 1 star

Cara I don't care how Ally Condie pronounces it, honestly, I say Cass-ee-uh. Cash-uh reminds me of Ketchup, and Ke$ha too, I guess.

Annaliese Cara wrote: "I don't care how Ally Condie pronounces it, honestly, I say Cass-ee-uh. Cash-uh reminds me of Ketchup, and Ke$ha too, I guess."

I sorta agree! Sorry Ally!!!

Chesky_division I really did not care how her name was pronounced. When I first read the name I thought Cass-E-uh. But then what does it matter if I'm wrong its all in my head anyway.

Agree!! I read it cass-e-uh through the series. I never heard about the plant thing till I read this thread, but I don't like the way that sounds. And besides, what Sarah said. If Condie wanted it pronounced that way, she should have said something in the beginning of the story, or at least made a note of it.

message 36: by Jade (new) - added it

Jade Cass-e-uh... I'm pretty sure

message 37: by Michelle (new) - added it

Michelle It's pronounced Cash-a, but I think Cass-ee-a is a better name.

message 38: by Anita (last edited Mar 19, 2014 06:05PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anita I pronounce it as Cass-e-a. I think it sounds better when you pronounce it like that.

message 39: by Casia (new) - added it

Casia Pickering Cassia is pronounced 'Cash-uh'. My grandmother pronounçes my name (Casia) that way. Me and the rest of the family though say 'caw-see-uh'
