Heather | 17 comments I thought Daughter of Smoke and Bone was the best book I read this year. The language was like poetry, the imagery was lush and the fantasy was fantastic. I bought into the characters and the world and I loved the way Karou went back and forth between the human world and her world. It was totally mesmerizing.

But very, very close to that would be Across the Universe. I did not want to read this one. And I wasn't going to, but I met the author and of course had to buy the book and I was hooked from the first page. It was fantastic! The world, all the lies and secrets, the way the people just bought the lies, it was just incredible. I've had the chance to read A Million Suns, the sequel and its' even better!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor was a pretty good read.

I'm one of the lucky ones to get a signed copy :) Due to that it was high up in my reading list. I enjoyed the two worlds as well. Prague mostly. I love the journey through the old buildings, I felt like I could open my eyes and be there. Just beautiful. The characters were interesting and unique. The idea around the teeth is eerie and makes sense all the same. As soon as I got to the part, the aha part, I knew exactly why this book was titled so.

100% buying the next book the day it comes out or begging for an ARC. Ok, it is unbecoming of a lady to beg but I think you understand *grin*

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire, #1) by Clay Griffith The Greyfriar The Rift Walker (Vampire Empire, #2) by Clay Griffith The Rift Walker by Clay Griffith & Susan Griffith

These books are something, I admit, would not normally pick up. However, they were sent to me by the Publisher, PYR. Undoubtedly these are my favorite books ever!

Steampunkery, adventure around nearly every page flip, a vampire prince (not the sparkly kind either), guards that would die for their princess, a kidnapping, political plots, a rude American, dirigibles, country side folk, a beautiful romance with a masked menace, a vampire slayer, & of course a female kick butt bad chick military commander of the vampire swarm. Did I leave something out? I'm sure it is in these beautifully written books.

I would lend these out because I recommend them to everyone... Oh Poppycock!! What am I saying, these books are never leaving my side. They are well, truly that amazing!

★Meghan★ (starinheaven) | 1455 comments My 5 star reads of the year are...
The Girl Who Played With Fire (Millennium, #2) by Stieg Larsson Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë City of Glass (The Mortal Instruments, #3) by Cassandra Clare Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor (Friday Harbor, #1) by Lisa Kleypas My Blood Approves (My Blood Approves, #1) by Amanda Hocking Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins The Host (The Host, #1) by Stephenie Meyer The Help by Kathryn Stockett Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter, #7) by J.K. Rowling Rogue (Shifters, #2) by Rachel Vincent Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Harry Potter, #6) by J.K. Rowling Hate List by Jennifer Brown Cindy Ella by Robin Palmer The Adoration of Jenna Fox (Jenna Fox Chronicles, #1) by Mary E. Pearson Ship Breaker (Ship Breaker, #1) by Paolo Bacigalupi Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins

The HP books and The Host were all re-reads...

message 7: by Mad Scientist (new)

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments The Mad Scientist loved The Host. I know others disliked it or just thought it boring.

message 8: by Melissa (new)

Melissa T (melissasmidnightmusings) My absolute favorite book of the year has to be A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness . It's a lot more adult than Twilight (which I also read this year, and somewhat ashamedly, admit to liking too). A lot of it takes place in a library ( I'm a sucker for libraries, I think I secretly want to be a librarian...) I don't know what else to say, it's just really good. I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel.

message 9: by Shauna (new)

Shauna Mckelly (mathyoda) | 175 comments I have too many five-star reading selections to post them all here, so I'll just give my favorite book in each category.

For a nonfiction read try:

Stones Into Schools: Promoting Peace With Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan

This book is the sequel to Three Cups of Tea, which is also a five star book in my opinion. Stones Into Schools tells the story of the day to day details of building schools for girls in some of the most remote areas of the Middle East where most government and charitable organizations simply won't or can't go.

For a fiction read try:

The Walk

This book tells the story of a successful advertising executive who after achieving phenomenal success experiences several devastating setbacks and decides to walk away from his former life to the fullest extent possible. There is a sequel called Miles to Go, and a third book in the series is scheduled for release in April 2012.

Any of these would be great reads for next year. I am looking forward to reading The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared but I probably won't get to it this year. Maybe I'll save it for January, in light of all of our reading goals.

Mad Scientist (madscientist) | 1119 comments I picked up The Reading Promise at BEA earlier this year :) I just need to get to it.

message 17: by Zakiya (new)

Zakiya LadyWings (zladywings) Don't think we did. I loved it, though! The first 200 pages, in my edition, were pretty boring, but once it starts to pick up, you're glued to the pages.

I heard The Night Circus reads like a dream!!

I have no clue to what it is about so I can't wait to be surprised. (I love going into a book with clueless notions besides you must read this! Which is pretty difficult when you talk to book lovers everyday. *grin*) I have this one on the Nook & I think I'm waiting to make this my first read of the 2012 year! Exciting!!

About Night Circus, just so you know, go in with a little lower expectations. I know, weird to say that because I just said it was one of the year's best. But, it's not a perfect book. It's weak in the areas of plot, pacing. Some of the secondary characters are not well developed. I rank it among the best because of the descriptions of the circus. It's her first book, so I'm also a little more tolerant, too. If you find that you're just not in the mood for it, just put it to the side and don't force yourself through it.

The first one takes awhile to get into, but once you do I think you will devour it. It will take some time, but I would bring a backup in case you get past the slow part in the beginning.

I read over half of the hunger games. It just wasn't for me at the time. A friend wanted to borrow it so I just passed it over. And gave her Catching Fire. I wasn't going to read it at the time. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood. :/

I did manage to read this on our trip. The first hundred pages, I was thinking, "why am I reading this?" But I'm very glad I stuck with it. I only managed to finish this our last day there, because my boyfriend's parents live in the country so every time I would go to read I'd fall asleep! Fresh air does that to me, lol. Plus my bf's 3 year old nephew was there so there wasn't a lot of down time. But, we're home now so I'll be on to the second one soon after I finish up the latest book in the PLL series.
