Diane | 13052 comments Dates are open ended - you may start at any time and there is no expiration date

RULES:

Object: Read around the world using the books on the combined 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die lists.

Time Limit: None. Challenge is ongoing.

Page Number Requirements: None

The only real rule is that the book must be found on one of the editions of Boxall's 1001 Books lists. I have made a list to get you started: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...
Note: Obviously, I haven't read all these books (...yet). I have based the settings based upon book descriptions, reader reviews, and other online sources. There are probably a good many that aren't precisely accurate in terms of where they are set. Also, there are a handful of 1001 books that did not make it on this list for one reason or another (i.e. no clear place settings, too many settings, settings in outer space and/or fantasy realms, etc.). Books to use are not limited to the books I have listed on the link (as I may have missed a few). Any 1001 book with a designated setting may be used. Vague or unnamed settings can default to the author's country of origin.

To post your progress, simply start a new topic in this folder. Please keep all of your updates in your same topic, making a new post with each book or group of books read. You may do this challenge in conjunction with the other group challenges, but if you are participating in this challenge, you must post your results for this challenge on this thread.

New for 2013: The following can be now be counted as separate destinations for the 1001 challenge:

Canadian Provinces
UK Counties
Irish Counties
French, German, Italian, and Spanish Regions
Indian States
Australian States and Territories
Book set in outer space (count once)
Book set in fictional realms (count once)
Book set in multiple locations (count once)
Book set in water (count once)
Book set in air (count once)
Book with no setting (count once)

You must have hit a weird computer glitch. I tested the link and it still went to the right place. If you have trouble accessing it, go to the main group page, scroll down to the folder "Good to Know" and then go to the topic "1001 Books Around the World". There's actually a War and Peace Club? Interesting.

You're welcome! It is a little hard to read due to some recent Goodreads bugs.

Donna (donnareadstheworld) | 474 comments Question - can we add a country twice on this one, for different books from the 1001 list?

e.g. I've already added France for 'Tender is the Night', but am currently reading 'Les Miserables' - can I put both books down as they are both 1001 list books, or should I disregard one of them as they are both from France?

Both unique destinations and number of books read are accounted for, so it would count.

Ellinor (1001andmore) | 852 comments I also would like to start with the challenge once I've finished my next book off the 1001 list.
I just have one short question: I saw that it's now possible to add provinces/regions from several more countries. The one I missed was Australia. Could we use it's states and provinces as well?
I don't know if the books from the 1001 list set in Australia specify the states they are set in. But if so it would be nice if we could use those too.

Yes, that would be fine. I hadn't originally included it since there weren't very many books on the list from Australia.

message 11: by Mikela (new)

Mikela I'm new to this group but have been on the 1001 group since 2011 so have read a number of the books. Am I correct in thinking I can add the countries visited as long as I read it after January 1,2012? Would hate to start an additional 1001 challenge and have to start again at one.

You can tailor-make the challenge to suit your needs and use whatever start date works best for you.

Ellinor (1001andmore) | 852 comments Is it "set in water" or "set on water"? I would like to use Chess Story for this category. It's partly set on a ship, so that would be "on water".

Either.

Sharon | 7 comments hmmmph. Why is the Guyana book "mostly set in England"????? There are many Guyana books set only in Guyana!

The books from this challenge only come from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list. Dabydeen does have some books only set in Guyana, but that is the book Boxall picked for the 1001 list. It is set in Kent, England, but the main character does reflect back on his time in Guyana.

Lori French (ltfrench) I'm new here. :)
Is there a place to find a list of all the places, without book covers attached, then I can add my own books, to each place, as I read them? Or is there some other easy way/place to gather this information from?
Thank you!
Lori

Hi, Lori. Sorry,I haven't found any lists like that. I have a list I have started under my thread, but it is far from complete.

message 19: by Lori (new)

Lori French (ltfrench) I just didn't want to create a master list, of places, if someone else had already done the work!
Thank you, Diane!

Jessica | 506 comments Hello Diane, please transfer me to the lifetime section of the readerboard since I listed all my books from before 2012. Thanks!

I just updated my location counts according to the new additions of various countries' states etc. My challenge thread: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I believe she meant for the 1001 book challenge, not the regular around the world challenge.

I was just thinking in the lines of all the countries listed besides the counting of this challenge.

Happy Holidays!

You may start with all of the 1001 list books you have already read during your lifetime. If it is on the list, it qualifies. Here are the books from the list:
