Warning: This thread contains spoilers. Do not proceed any further if you haven't finished the series.

Discuss one of the best dystopians of today - The Hunger Games

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Ooh-one of the best dystopians of today, huh?

I see you've finally finished the trilogy-wahey!

But I do agree; one of my favourites (well, in the teen-fiction genre- for readers who want to invest in a completely new world on a more elevated scale than Hunger Games offers, I really recommend 1984)

What I mostly like are the 3 main characters; they're so real! And so relatable...In comparison to more romance-driven series like Twilight and House of Night, Peeta and Gale and Katniss are just your average teenagers plucked from the street.

And let's not forget about the adorable Finnick!!

SO cute! Take note, Stephenie Meyer and the like: THIS is how to write about a beautiful boy-make him realistic (and gush-worthy, too, by throwing in some hilarious, witty quotes; e.g.

the combination of the scabs and the ointment looks hideous. I can't help enjoying his distress.
"Poor Finnick. Is this the first time in your life you haven't looked pretty?" I say.
"It must be. The sensation's completely new. How have you managed it all these years?" he asks.
"Just avoid mirrors. You'll forget about it," I say.
"Not if I keep looking at you," he says.”

By the way, Aprille, are spoilers allowed?

I don't want to ruin the books for anyone, so maybe put a tiny warning by the title..? Unless it should be spoiler-free, which is fine too, of course......

*Gives meaningful look*

;)

As you've spoken about 1984 in the past I might track it down and read it.

I haven't finished the trilogy yet, starting Mockingjay today.

Erm, as for spoilers... It's a shame you can't mark it as the same as you can in reviews (if that makes sense). I'll see what I can do and get back to you on it :)

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Cool :) I can't say much on Hunger Games without drawing on spoilers and ranting about some of the author's choices in terms of plot..

And as for 1984, all I can really say is wow. It is one of the most imaginitve works of fiction I've come across..George Orwell has basically thought up a whole new world, and explains it in such a way that I understand Oceania more than the world I've spent 17 years of my life on!

READ IT! (And don't just take my word on the awesomeness of it..check some reviews-most of them RAVE about it)

BTW, your new profile pic is fabulous, dahling..:)

Ok, I'll track it down and let you know what I think.

Haha thanks, though it'll change back to lightsabers eventually xD

Cheyenne (cheylaraine) I LOVE the Hunger Games. But I shouldn't add to this discussion yet. I still have to read Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins

You can add, I'm currently reading that one too :)

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) Don't worry, I'll keep mum on any spoilers for ANY of the books!

*zips lips*

But hurry up, guys! I really want to discuss this series (esp. Gale and Finnick-ooh, and who can forget the adorable Haymitch!)

:)

Cheyenne (cheylaraine) So far, the first Hunger Games was my favorite. No. 2 was slow in the beginning, but great at the end. I want to read MJ but I'm in the middle of 2 other books right now.

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) I know exactly how that is- when you're juggling three+ different books, all of which have completely different storylines and characters...after a while (for me at least), they all blur together.

Which is when things get strange.

You know something's not right when you're confusing Pennywise the Dancing Clown from the brilliant IT with Sookie from Club Dead.

*shudder*

Not a pretty combination, let me tell you. I think it's scarred me for life...

Note to self: seek counelling. Urgently.

:)

Ok, I've changed this group to spoilers allowed.

Just a thought, maybe when you post a comment that has a spoiler right off, just put a couple of spaces in so it doesn't show in people's newsfeeds.

An example :)

Now, Mockingjay! What did you think?

message 12: by Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (last edited Dec 15, 2011 07:04AM) (new)

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) I think Mockingjay offers more of a satisfying conclusion than most other teen fiction series, but because I had LOVED the first one so much, I expected the same awesomeness from the other books...but I don't think the last two were as good (sorry, HG die-hards! Don't shoot me). Especially since SPOILER

a lot of the action took place out of our narrator's view (which meant we heard it just being told back to her-BORING!!)

SPOILER OVER

Having said that, it was still of a higher standard than most of the other teen books I've read of the same genre...and the characters are amazingly AMAZING!!!

Okay, think carefully before you answer this...

Peeta or Gale???

and...

Finnick or Haymitch???

(If anyone's interested, I'd be Gale and Finnick all the way- the first because he's tall, dark and lovely (just the way I like 'em!), and Finnick is just simply FTW, man!

Peeta's two sweet (HUGE turn-off; I like 'em bad-boy ish) and Haymitch is actually a close contender with Finnick- both are hilarious and endearing)
But Finnick edges it with his flirtatious personality.

.

Yeah, I know what you mean about Mockingjay. I wish that we had been in most of the action, so maybe the series should've been written in third person?

I kinda think it should've been just one book... But I really enjoyed Katniss as an MC, so I was happy to read about her :)

Now, I would have to say Peeta and Finnick.

Peeta because he was an absolute sweetheart and had been in love with her for all those years, and Finnick coz he was adorable! I love that he was in love with Annie.

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) It was disappointing about the final third of the book, because I think how action scenes are written truly shows how talented an author is (maybe that's why she opted out??) But I know what you mean about Katniss- she's such an awesome girl character; totally no-nonsense and frank, and such a breath of fresh air after characters like Bella (Twilight) and Zoey (House of Night)..

"I love that [Finnick] was in love with Annie."
I love that about Finnick, too!

“Finnick!" Something between a shriek and a cry of joy. A lovely if somewhat bedraggled young woman--dark tangled hair, sea green eyes--runs toward us in nothing but a sheet. "Finnick!" And suddenly, it's as if there's no one in the world but these two, crashing through space to reach each other. They collide, enfold, lose their balance, and slam against a wall, where they stay. Clinging into one being. Indivisible.
A pang of jealousy hits me. Not for either Finnick or Annie but for their certainty. No one seeing them could doubt their love.”

― Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

Seriously, this couple are just the sweetest!

But as for Peeta...I'd have to disagree. Sorry! But I just prefer Gale much much more - all his traits are just so much more appealing..sweet boys are just not crush-material for me...but I guess that shows how messed up I am!

:)

Awwww that quote almost made me cry! Yeah I love that he wasn't a love interest for Katniss because he already was head over heels with Annie. He was just there as a comrade or friend.

If I was Katniss I would've happily taken both Peeta and Gale ;)

Mel (who is deeply in love with herself) (iamdeeplyinlovewithmyself) And maybe even Haymitch too, if she was feeling frisky!

Seriously, that guy has a lot of lovability going for him..with a snarky sense of humour like that, and if I was drunk enough to squint vaguely at him and pretend he vaguely resembled Finnick, I wouldn't mind spending the night with him, if you know what I mean...nudge, nudge wink, wink :D

Actually, ew. No way. He's too old for me.

*slaps hand*

Bad Mel. Bad!

Control that reverse-paedophilia you've got going on RIGHT NOW!

(By the way, I'm writing this at 00:30 UK time - as you can probably tell...)

:)

xD Love it. After seeing Haymitch in the trailer, I definitely agree with the above! He's looks rather the tasty dish :P

I iz shocked.

How true is it? Much as I love HG, I'd still think of pie first. Then again, I am very food-orientated anyway, so maybe I'm not the best judge..
