Perrone: These short stories and novel differ from Brazilian writing featured in TWL during 2011. Rheda, whose name minus the silent h forms the anagram 'read', writes about Brazilians in the mid-1990s and early-2000s in urban São Paulo and in places to which Brazilians immigrated in Europe and America.
The tone and fabric of Rheda's 1990's prose are decidedly post-Jorge Amado--who is known for exotic (and erotic) essentialism--and post-Clarice Lispector, who excelled at abstract expressionism.
TWL read some of Amado's and Lispector's writings. This collection is valuable for translating Rheda's stories into English, thereby introducing a contemporary, Brazilian voice to readers.
