Jim Started In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower and The Waste Land.

This second volume of Proust is reading a bit faster than Swann's Way, and I'm definitely happy about that!

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments I'm between major projects, seeing as this is a busy week (and a nerve-wracking one at work) so I'm reading pretty light stuff. The Black Path wasn't light in subject matter but was a quick read. I've also started Helen Oyeyemi's Mr. Fox because the reviews were intriguing and another Nordic mystery, Misterioso.. (those Scandinavian mystery/thrillers are totally addictive for me)
After Christmas, I plan on starting my rereads of Swann's Way, The Waves, and Difference and Repetition. If I remember my experience of the last one (which was a fairly long time ago), it's one of those "little bit at a time" reads-a little reading followed by a lot of thought.

A little bit at a time is definitely the right strategy for Derrida. BP member Kane, who is going to lead the discussion of W&D, asked for a 22 week discussion period - 2 weeks for each of the 11 essays. Each essay isn't very long, but they are dense!

Ellen (elliearcher) | 1373 comments I agree with Kane-it's not a book to breeze thru (even if one could!)

JackieB | 14 comments I have been reading The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack for about four days so far and if I decide to finish it, it will probably take me most, if not all of this week. I'm reading it slowly because Mark Hodder (the author) has built a fscinating alternative Victorian world and I keep stopping reading to think about the ingenious ideas he keeps coming out with. However, I am beginning to wonder if he is a little bit too much in love with his world. He keeps coming out with ingenious ideas, which do not really move the plot on much (if at all) and meanwhile his characters are missing something which is obvious to the reader. To be fair there are reasons why it wouldn't be obvious to the characters, but it's a bit dangerous making this reader wait too long for the penny to drop. I am getting restive and if the plot doesn't pick up pace soon I may be moving on, even though the world he has created is a fascinating one.

Slowly going along with the Gary Zukov book.
The Seat of the Soulis mind boggling in its implications.
